You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

2 John 1:12-13

12 Having [echo] many things [polus] to write [grapho] unto you [humin], I would [boulomai] not [ou] write with [dia] paper [chartes] and [kai] ink [melan]: but [alla] I trust [elpizo] to come [erchomai] unto [pros] you [humas], and [kai] speak [laleo] face [stoma] to [pros] face [stoma], that [hina] our [hemon] joy [chara] may be [o] full [pleroo].
13 The children [teknon] of thy [sou] elect [eklektos] sister [adelphe] greet [aspazomai] thee [se]. Amen [amen]. KJV-Interlinear

12 Having many things to write to you, I do not want to do so with paper and ink; but I hope to come to you and speak face to face, that your joy may be made full. 13 The children of your chosen sister greet you. NASB

One quick note with regard to yesterday's study. We as Christians are not to lend support of any kind to anything which is clearly anti-God. This should be obvious. This would include religions, or organizations or groups which promote anti-Christian causes, like Islam, or Hinduism, various cults and so forth. We are not to give them money, or anything that would be tantamount to supporting or promoting false doctrine. The organizations which promote false religions or philosophies are in view here.

As far as individual people go, then we have the command of love thy neighbor which we have already studied. People are to be treated cordially with respect and basically treat them as you yourself would want to be treated. You do not have to agree with others, but you should be polite and courteous and so forth. Again, all of this should be obvious anyway.

John closes with his personal expression and desire to meet with people face to face to continue their instruction. He has many more things to teach, but not the time to write it all down. Of course you and I have the completed scriptures in our current day. John, back then, probably would not have had all of these documents. And certainly not assembled in the fashion in which we have the Bible. It will be several hundred years before the Bible, as we are familiar with it, will be assembled.

The purpose, or one of the purposes of learning Bible doctrine is, 'that your joy may be fulfilled' as John herein states.

Joy is your inner happiness and a relaxed mental attitude which comes with advancement to spiritual maturity. The Bible in several places refers this to achieving Gods rest, or entering into God rest, or achieving inner peace. These are all terms for characteristics of spiritual maturity.

There is only one way to receive this inner peace in ones life, and that is through Bible doctrine in the soul. You get that by conducting a daily study every day of your life. There is no other way to gain this inner happiness in your life. And, inner happiness does not depend on your circumstances of life either. You can achieve inner peace regardless of the circumstances of your life. It depends only on the content of doctrine in your soul and the extent of your use of it in your life.

Remember that doctrine is the source food for your soul. Your daily use of it (doctrine) is the exercise which produces the spiritual muscle of faith in your life. We also call this your spiritual production - that on which you will be evaluated before the Judgment Seat of Christ.

Now John closes the letter in his final verse. If it had been written to a specific person then they would have been named, but no names are given. John seems here to be using an affectionate use of the reference to children for believers in a local church to whom this letter will be circulated. The church is again referred to as the sister.

In our current time we have cities who engage in relationships with 'sister' cities elsewhere in the world. This is generally a figurative expression (sister city) for politics or commerce and such. This would be the same application of that concept.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
