2 Timothy 4:20

20 Erastus [Erastos] abode [meno] at [en] Corinth: [Korinthos] but [de] Trophimus [Trophimos] have I left [apoleipo] at [en] Miletum [Miletos] sick. [astheneo] KJV-Interlinear

20 Erastus remained at Corinth, but Trophimus I left sick at Miletus. NASB

The Erastus who remained at Corinth was referred to as the city treasurer of Corinth, and had also sent greetings through Paul to the church at Rome, Rom 16:23. He is most likely the same man that Paul sent with Timothy to Macedonia, Acts 19:22.

Trophimus was a native of the province of Asia, in the city of Ephesus, and had accompanied Paul from Greece to Troas, Acts 20:1-6. He helped carry the offering to the church in Jerusalem, where he was the unintentional cause of Paul's arrest for bringing a Gentile into the temple, Acts 21:29. On his trip to Rome, Paul with sadness had to leave him sick at Miletus.

It is important to note that Paul made no effort himself to heal Trophimus, who was present at the late-night service in Troas when Paul miraculously restored life to Eutychus, a young man who went to sleep during the sermon and fell out a window to his death, Acts 20:9-10.

Paul possessed the gift of healing, and certainly would have healed his close friend, unless he lacked that gift.

This is important because, this was a sign that the gifts given to the apostles, were coming to an end.

There is no evidence that any of the apostles, including Paul, performed miracles of any sort during their later years.

As more and more of the New Testament was revealed and made available to the church, God's Word no longer needed the verification of miracles, and thus they gradually disappeared having accomplished their purpose of establishing the credentials of the apostles.

Eventually all of the gifts given, because they were temporary, were removed, and since that first century, have not existed since. So, beware of those who say that they possess such gifts (healing, tongues, resistance to poisons, etc) because those gifts no longer exist, and have not, for over 1900 years and counting.

The miracle gifts that have come into existence since the early 1800's, all false, have become more and more sophisticated and certainly fit the pattern of false prophets and false doctrines, and leading astray techniques, that will be the pattern of the latter period or our dispensation.

Those who lack doctrine, will be easily fooled, because the lack of doctrine in the soul, and that also makes people lacking not only in truth, but lacking in the common coping skills of normal day to day life.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
