Heb. 3:7-11

7 Wherefore [dio] (as [kathos] the Holy [hagios] Ghost [pneuma] saith [lego], To day [semeron] if [ean] ye will hear [akouo] his [autos] voice [phone],
8 Harden [skleruno] not [me] your [humon] hearts [kardia], as [hos] in [en] the provocation [parapikrasmos], in [kata] the day [hemera] of temptation [peirasmos] in [en] the wilderness [eremos]:
9 When [hou] your [humon] fathers [pater] tempted [peirazo] me [me], proved [dokimazo] me [me], and [kai] saw [eido] my [mou] works [ergon] forty [tessarakonta] years [etos].
10 Wherefore [dio] I was grieved [prosochthizo] with that [ekeinos] generation [genea], and [kai] said [epo], They do [planao] alway [aei] err [planao] in their heart [kardia]; and [de] they [autos] have [ginosko] not [ou] known [ginosko] my [mou] ways [hodos].
11 So [hos] I sware [omnuo] in [en] my [mou] wrath [orge], They shall [eiserchomai] not [ei] enter [eiserchomai] into [eis] my [mou] rest [katapausis].) KJV-Interlinear

7 Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says, 'Today if you hear His voice, 8 Do not harden your hearts as when they provoked Me, As in the day of trial in the wilderness, 9 Where your fathers tried Me by testing Me, And saw My works for forty years. 10 'Therefore I was angry with this generation, And said, 'They always go astray in their heart; And they did not know My ways'; 11 As I swore in My wrath, 'They shall not enter My rest.'' NASB

Psalm 95 is being quoted here. The Israelites had just come out of Egypt. They saw the fire of God standing in a pillar between them and the Egyptians. They saw the water divide before them with a wall of water standing on either side of a path of dry ground through which they could escape the Egyptians. They saw the Egyptians destroyed by that same water which withheld its destructive power against them as they walked and ran across the sea to safety.

The crossing of the sea of reeds, or Red Sea as it is generally called, is a picture of salvation. Mans deliverance from certain slavery and death. The Israelites crossing through was representative of their belief and trust in God that He would hold up the waters and save them, as well as His destruction of the Egyptians that were chasing them.

They, just being saved, are now representative of children just born into the spiritual life. They now had to grow up and become mature. This took them forty years and the original generation of the Exodus, is the generation which tried Gods patience, constantly during those entire forty years.

They were given food, water, and shelter. Their shoes never even wore out during their entire time of forty years in the desert. Yet the people constantly complained, constantly doubted, constantly tried the Lords patience with their disobedience and lack of faith.

Their intended destination was Canaan, the Promised Land. The Promise came to Abraham and was given to Abraham through the sons of Shem.

The land was called Canaan after the name of a descendant of Ham. They (the descendants of Ham) were not promised this land, but they moved into the land to occupy it nevertheless. They were in effect trespassing on land that did not belong to them.

Over the centuries the descendants of Ham became very degenerate and that was their state at the time of the Israelites crossing over into the land, forty years after the Exodus.

The second crossing over came on the Jordan River under the leadership of Joshua, after the Israelites had been wandering in the desert for forty years.

Their forty year wandering represents their time of spiritual growth to maturity. The crossing over of the Jordan represents their passage into spiritual maturity. They were to enter into a land of milk and honey, into a land in which they had not cultivated, had not planted, had not built any structures whatsoever. Yet they would be there to take the fruits of that work which they did not perform.

God does all of the work, man receives the blessings as a result of Gods efforts. That is the purpose of spiritual maturity. That is the goal of spiritual maturity. That is the 'rest' of spiritual maturity.

That rebellious generation was not allowed to enter into the land because they did not obey Gods mandates. They refused to grow up.

Anyone who refuses to advance to spiritual maturity under Gods terms, will not, repeat, not enter into spiritual maturity. Regardless of your good intentions. God rejects all of mans works. God pays wages only based on His work, not yours.

Therefore if you hear His Word, then listen, learn, and grow up. Do not harden your attitude against Gods teaching. Don't try to find a shortcut, a better way, a faster way in your spiritual life. Don't try to improve on Gods plan. You can't.

Getting into Gods defined spiritual maturity, Gods rest, Gods promised land, is conditioned on obedience to Him.

Believing in Christ is wonderful. It gives you an infinite blessing over the alternative Lake of Fire. But that is not where the spiritual life ends. As a new born (reborn) spiritual babe, you need to grow up. An adult can do far more than an infant. A mature and wealthy adult can do nearly infinitely more than an infant. In everything in life we can obtain an example of a parallel principle in the spiritual life.

Listen, learn, and come boldly before the Throne of Grace. That bold advance before God is manifested through your spiritual growth. Don't grow up and you won't get the keys to Gods treasury. That treasury has far more in it than any of us can even begin to imagine.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
