Heb. 3:15-18

15 While [en] it is said [lego], To day [semeron] if [ean] ye will hear [akouo] his [autos] voice [phone], harden [skleruno] not [me] your [humon] hearts [kardia], as [hos] in [en] the provocation [parapikrasmos].
16 For [gar] some [tis], when they had heard [akouo], did provoke [parapikraino]: howbeit [alla] not [ou] all [pas] that came [exerchomai] out of [ek] Egypt [Aiguptos] by [dia] Moses [Moseus].
17 But [de] with whom [tis] was he grieved [prosochthizo] forty [tessarakonta] years [etos]? was it not [ouchi] with them that had sinned [hamartano], whose [hos] carcases [kolon] fell [pipto] in [en] the wilderness [eremos]?
18 And [de] to whom [tis] sware he [omnuo] that they should [eiserchomai] not [me] enter [eiserchomai] into [eis] his [autos] rest [katapausis], but [ei me] to them that believed not [apeitheo]? KJV-Interlinear

15 while it is said, 'Today if you hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts, as when they provoked Me.' 16 For who provoked Him when they had heard? Indeed, did not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses? 17 And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did He swear that they should not enter His rest, but to those who were disobedient? NASB

Over 600,000 Israelites of adult age, went out of Egypt in the Exodus. Add together their children and the number probably approached over two million people, plus their herds and flocks, wagons and carts and such.

By the time they were ready to enter into the Promised Land, all of the original adult population had died off, with jut a few exceptions like Joshua and Caleb. Those original Exodus generation adults who were allowed to enter into Canaan, were very few.

And so it is in life throughout history in every generation. Very few people make it to and maintain their spiritually mature status. The vast majority of folks never get off the ground in their spiritual life, even though they have been saved at some point in their life. And a large number of folks who do advance in their spiritual lives, sooner or later fall away with indifference or apathy.

The hardening of ones heart is representative of ones negative interest in God and doctrine. Though many folks might say that they are definitely interested in God, they do not want to seek Him through the Bible. They want to find or discover Him in some other esoteric way. This is very similar to the cult movements which can range from pursuit of some guru, to sitting in the corner humming a chant, to getting emotional over holiday music or movies.

Hardening of ones heart is any form of departure from that which God intends for us to do in our pursuit of His wisdom. Just as there is only one God, only one Savior, only one Spirit, only one fellowship, only one faith, so too there is only one method of study and spiritual growth which God authorizes. There is no other means of growing up spiritually other than the way appointed by God, for man. You might want to review your notes from our study in Isa. 11.

People are indifferent toward God and doctrine. People have their own ideas as to what they think, God expects of them. People give up on God and pursue other philosophies. People don't believe in God and think this is all a bunch of foolishness. All of these are false beliefs. All of these will lead to great disappointment at the end of ones life.

Note, that we all will reach the end of our life sooner or later and that is when the real truth becomes a reality to everyone who fails in their spiritual life, during their life.

Who failed in the Exodus generation. Most of those who were delivered out of Egypt, failed. Very few had successful spiritual lives - very few.

So if you purse your spiritual life, then you will be in a very small group - the only true minority in all of history - spiritually mature believers.

I have a population chart which shows the total numbers of people ever born into history. It is an estimate of course, but if it is close, then by the year 2100 AD there will have been 100 billion people who have been born since Adam and Eve.

Most of those will not have much in the way of spiritual lives. Many will be unbelievers. And those who will advance to spiritual maturity will be very small in number.

Most folks don't like to be in the minority, but now you have an opportunity to become a member of the best minority group ever.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
