Heb. 4:4-7

4 For [gar] he spake [ereo] in a certain place [pou] of [peri] the seventh [hebdomos] day on this wise [houto], And [kai] God [theos] did rest [katapauo] the seventh [en] [hebdomos] day [hemera] from [apo] all [pas] his [autos] works [ergon].
5 And [kai] in [en] this [touto] place again [palin], If [ei] they shall enter [eiserchomai] into [eis] my [mou] rest [katapausis].
6 Seeing [epei] therefore [oun] it remaineth [apoleipo] that some [tis] must enter [eiserchomai] therein [eis] [autos], and [kai] they to whom it was first [proteron] preached [euaggelizo] entered [eiserchomai] not [ou] in [eiserchomai] because [dia] of unbelief [apeitheia]:
7 Again [palin], he limiteth [horizo] a certain [tis] day [hemera], saying [lego] in [en] David [Dabid], To day [semeron], after [meta] so long [tosoutos] a time [chronos]; as [kathos] it is said [ereo], To day [semeron] if [ean] ye will hear [akouo] his [autos] voice [phone], harden [skleruno] not [me] your [humon] hearts [kardia]. KJV-Interlinear

4 For He has thus said somewhere concerning the seventh day, 'And God rested on the seventh day from all His works'; 5 and again in this passage, 'They shall not enter My rest.' 6 Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly had good news preached to them failed to enter because of disobedience, 7 He again fixes a certain day, 'Today,' saying through David after so long a time just as has been said before, 'Today if you hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts.' NASB

In eternity past God created all of the angels. They all got along marvelously. Then God created the universe. So far so good. Then the angels fell away from God in the angelic conflict. A trial of some sort was held, opportunities to go back to God were offered and some angels refused that offer from God.

Satan destroyed the universe and planet earth along with it. Our planets prehistoric era, which belonged to angelic history, came to an end.

God set into motion the next phase of history. That of mankind. In six days He restored the earth and created man.

Adam and Eve lived in the Garden in perfect conditions. They had Gods rest. They walked and talked with God and He provided everything they needed. But again trouble came. Satan deceived them and man followed the pattern of falling away from God, which the angels followed in their prior history.

Man lost Gods rest and then God immediately set into motion His plan to bring man back into His rest. But this rest would be an even better rest than was available in the garden. In the garden man still had his limits. In the future, man will have a resurrection body and virtually no limits to his abilities and opportunities.

God rested on the seventh day following the restoration. Note that God created all of the universe for the angels to live in and they failed. But in our history, God only gave us one single planet with which to live our lives and make our choices for Him or otherwise.

This chapter compares the two passages in Gen. 2:2 and Psa. 95:7

Gen. 2:2
2 And by the seventh day God completed His work which He had done; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. NASB

Psa. 95:7
7 For He is our God, And we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand. Today, if you would hear His voice, 8 Do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah, As in the day of Massah in the wilderness; NASB

God indeed finalized His own work. He made available all that was necessary for mankind to be able to enter back into His rest. Our rest by the way will occur historically in the next life. We can only prepare for it in this life.

But this passage shows that Gods rest was not made available just once, to Adam and Eve, but is available to all peoples in every generation throughout history. Adam and Eve made their decision and turned back to God in faith. The Exodus generation, which occurred about 2500 years later, refused to obey God and they failed in their spiritual lives.

But history is not yet completed. God set into motion the Divine Decrees in eternity past. In those Decrees, He looked down through the tunnel of time and saw positive volition from many folks throughout history, and therefore God allows history to advance through time to its conclusion until the last and final generation when positive volition will expire and no more saved people, no more positive attitudes will exist. History will then cease.

'It remains therefore for some to enter ...'

Every generation, every positive person throughout all of history will have their opportunity to believe in Christ, and also they will have their opportunity to advance to spiritual maturity. This despite the failures of prior generations, in their spiritual lives.

What people did in the past has no bearing on our opportunity of being born, and being saved, and our advancement to spiritual maturity. Neither man, nor angel, nor mother nature controls history. Jesus Christ controls history.

And because of His faithfulness, which we previously studied, because His faithfulness is greater than that of Moses and any other person in history, then you and I, and everyone else in history will get our chance to be saved and to advance to spiritual maturity.

Our only barrier to success in our spiritual life is our own stubborn volition of refusal to growing up. We are our own worst enemy.

Again, neither man, nor angel, nor mother nature can stand in your way of advancing to spiritual maturity. Only you, can defeat yourself.

Your opportunity it right now, 'today.' Since today is always with us, then your opportunity is always available to you for advancement in your spiritual life. But you do not have an unlimited number of todays. One day God will pull the plug on your life and that is when your todays come to an end.

You have many todays now. Don't waste them. Don't come up with excuses as to why you cannot study your Bible today. By skipping a day of study, you might as well pull out a thousand dollar bill and burn it up. How many of you would do that even once?

The time to study is now. Don't turn away. Your opportunity will not remain indefinitely.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
