Heb. 7:15-17

15 And [kai] it is [esti] yet [eti] far more [perissoteron] evident [katadelos]: for [ei] that after [kata] the similitude [homoiotes] of Melchisedec [Melchisedek] there ariseth [anistemi] another [heteros] priest [hiereus],
16 Who [hos] is made [ginomai], not [ou] after [kata] the law [nomos] of a carnal [sarkikos] commandment [entole], but [alla] after [kata] the power [dunamis] of an endless [akatalutos] life [zoe].
17 For [gar] he testifieth [martureo], [hoti] Thou [su] art a priest [hiereus] for [eis] ever [aion] after [kata] the order [taxis] of Melchisedec [Melchisedek]. KJV-Interlinear

15 And this is clearer still, if another priest arises according to the likeness of Melchizedek, 16 who has become such not on the basis of a law of physical requirement, but according to the power of an indestructible life. 17 For it is witnessed of Him, 'Thou art a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.' NASB

More differences between Christ and the Levitical Priests.

First it was the priests who stood in the way of Jesus and tried to eliminate Him from history. There was no king (descendant of David) at the time of Christ's first advent. Christ was not born until the rule over Judah had departed and went to Rome.

Gen. 49:10
10 'The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes, And to him shall be the obedience of the peoples. NASB

This is a well known verse, or should have been. Rome assumed formal rule when it levied its income tax. That is when the scepter of rule left Judah. Joseph and Mary were traveling to be counted for income tax purposes. Judah had its own rule even from the time of the Babylonian occupation. This combined with the prophecy of Christ's birth, should have been a clear cut clue that the birth of the Messiah was at hand. Even foreigners (the Magi) knew of the prophecies, as well as the star which led them to the Christ child.

Num. 24:17
7 'I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near; A star shall come forth from Jacob, And a scepter shall rise from Israel, NASB

If the priests had anything on the ball concerning their own prophecies, then they would have known that the Messiah was born.

Two things rise a new. The first is from our passage. A new priest, one of a different kind, will rise up and replace the old priesthood. And from the passage in Numbers, a new ruler of a different kind will rise up with a new scepter.

A new king could not rise up until the old scepter had disappeared. That occurred when Rome imposed its own rules and especially since it levied taxes. Only a nation can levy taxes under its own rule. That rule had been forfeit to Rome.

Also, the words used for ' another rises' here mean not another of the same type. Not just another priest, or another king, but another of a different type. And the passage implies that the different type, was also a far better type. If you had a dog, a toy poodle for example, and you traded it for another toy poodle, then you have traded something of the same kind. But if you traded off your poodle for an Australian Shepherd, then you have traded for something totally different.

Jesus Christ is a Priest, but He is of a totally different kind of Priest.

Jesus was born of a virgin, and self raised. Since Christ gives life and takes it away, then you might say that Christ birthed Himself. Something that none of the other priests could say or do for themselves.

Second, Jesus went to the Cross and by doing so is able to bring all who believe in Him, to the Father. Again, no priest was ever able to bring anyone into the presence of the Father.

Third, Jesus Christ was resurrected. Jesus Christ is eternal and gives eternal life. No other priest has ever been resurrected nor is capable of giving eternal life.

Fourth, Christ had no human priestly ancestry, no priestly heritage. Aaron's priest descendants could only claim a right to priesthood because of who their parents were.

They had to be pure descendants of Aaron. And even with this pedigree, any one of a number of physical blemishes or deficiencies could disqualify them from holding the office of priest. There was not a single moral or spiritual qualification that they had to meet in order to become a priest. Their serving had nothing at all to do with character, ability, personality, or holiness. They only had to be a descendant of Aaron.

The Levitical Priesthood was an outward compulsion. For Jesus Christ, the priesthood is an inner compulsion.

The Levitical priesthood had many priests. Christ is but one person.

Psa. 110:4
4 The LORD has sworn and will not change His mind, 'Thou art a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.' NASB

Abraham recognized these truths. Moses recognized these truths. David recognized these truths. All the way down to Zechariah who also recognized these truths. This subject is thoroughly documented and clear in the scriptures.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
