Heb. 8:4-5

4 For [gar] if [ei] [men] he were [en] on [epi] earth [ge], he should [an] not [oude] be [en] a priest [hiereus], seeing that there are [on] priests [hiereus] that offer [prosphero] gifts [doron] according [kata] to the law [nomos]:
5 Who [hostis] serve [latreuo] unto the example [hupodeigma] and [kai] shadow [skia] of heavenly things [epouranios], as [kathos] Moses [Moseus] was admonished of God [chrematizo] when he was about [mello] to make [epiteleo] the tabernacle [skene]: for [gar], See [horao], saith he [phemi], that thou make [poieo] all things [pas] according to [kata] the pattern [tupos] shewed [deiknuo] to thee [soi] in [en] the mount [oros]. KJV-Interlinear

4 Now if He were on earth, He would not be a priest at all, since there are those who offer the gifts according to the Law; 5 who serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things, just as Moses was warned by God when he was about to erect the tabernacle; for, 'See,' He says, 'that you make all things according to the pattern which was shown you on the mountain.' NASB

During Jesus Christ's ministry here on the earth, during His first advent, He never once attempted to act in the capacity of a priest. Jesus never served in the Temple, never offered sacrifices or offerings in behalf of others on the alter in the Temple. He never attempted to enter into the Holy room or Holy of Holies.

Jesus was descended for the tribe of Judah, not of the tribe of Levi. The temple in Jerusalem was already under the service of the Levites and they did not need any further assistance for the things that they did.

So here on the earth, Jesus was disqualified to act in the capacity of a priest according to the first covenant. He was not of the tribe of Levi, nor a descendant of Aaron as is required for the position of High Priest.

But as we have already studied, the purpose of the first covenant of the law was to condemn man and to demonstrate his sinfulness, and mans need for something better. It was never the solution, but only pointed to the solution.

Once Christ had gone to the Cross, then the need for the first covenant was concluded. Now a better covenant was established. Christ was to serve from the true Temple which is in heaven.

The Levites of Jesus' day served in a temple (the temple of Herod) which was a copy of the temple of Solomon, which followed as a copy of the Tabernacle which was constructed by Moses in the desert.

Moses received his vision of the original temple in heaven while he was on the mountain receiving instructions from God.

Ex. 25:40
40 And see that you make them after the pattern for them, which was shown to you on the mountain. NASB

Acts 7:44
44 'Our fathers had the tabernacle of testimony in the wilderness, just as He who spoke to Moses directed him to make it according to the pattern which he had seen. NASB

So the tabernacle and temple here on the earth are nothing more than copies of the original. And poor copies at that. Why? Because they were not only copies but mere shadows of the original.

A shadow has no substance. A shadow is nothing more than evidence of something else which is real and of which interrupts the light which shines upon the original. A shadow gives you no detail, no three dimension picture, no color. It is a mere silhouette of the original.

You cannot see the original in full detail by looking at the shadow. You see only its outline.

Jesus could not minister the old offerings under the old covenant because He was the object of those offerings.

Jesus Christ's function was to minister the new offerings under the new covenant - the reality of His work on the Cross, death, burial, resurrection, ascension and session.

Jesus Christ represents the reality, the original. Why would any one want to have a copy, or the mere shadow (which is in effect having nothing), when they can have the original?

That would be like seeing a picture of a meal and wanting that picture more than going into a real restaurant and sitting down and eating the real food. Trying to survive on mere pictures means starvation and death. Eating real food means better health and life.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
