Heb. 10:18

18 Now [de] where [hopou] remission [aphesis] of these [touton] is, there is no more [ouketi] offering [prosphora] for [peri] sin [hamartia]. KJV-Interlinear

18 Now where there is forgiveness of these things, there is no longer any offering for sin. NASB

Forgiveness here means the release from a debt. It is a pardon, a release, a cancellation of an obligation.

So, once a debt has been paid by another person, then why would anyone want to reinstate that debt obligation? Especially since that debt was such a great burden, one that would totally destroy ones life forever.

When Adam sinned in the Garden, mankind inherited that sin in every generation. It was a separation from God and life. A separation so great that mankind could never reinstate himself.

Christ (the Messiah) came to our rescue and took our obligation upon Himself. He stood in our place and paid the debt demanded by sin. Namely death or permanent separation away from God forever.

Christ paid that debt. Once paid it is canceled, no longer in force. The debt has been satisfied and the satisfaction of the debt payment, has been recorded in the public registry of heaven. There is no longer any debt outstanding against mankind. None.

Since it has been paid, there are no longer any payments due. No more sacrifices are required. So why then would anyone want to go back to the old system, a system which has been made obsolete by the fulfillment of its purpose?

That is the question offered by these last several passages.

The old system never paid off anything. The old system had no ability to pay for anything. It had no resources or power with which to cancel mans debt for sin. It could only show mans weakness and lack of resources.

Likewise any system of religion, of gaining man access back to God is weak in that it cannot. Why would anyone turn to something totally false, when there is one already in place which God provided and man has no work obligation to earn that gift which God has given to everyone.

But unfortunately the sin nature of mankind is always working and trying to re-direct man into his own 'better' plan than that of God.
2 Peter 3:9
'The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance'

Repentance is a change of mind, a change of attitude.

Salvation is a return to eternal life. The work which allows man to have that, was accomplished by Christ on the Cross.

Salvation was promised in the Old Testament by the original covenant. A covenant, the Levitical Priesthood, whose sole purpose to man, was to demonstrated to man, that man cannot gain salvation on his own.

Salvation was purchased and paid for in full by Christ, by one act on the Cross, in the fulfillment of that original covenant. The promise was a good thing, but Christ's actual work is far better than the mere promise.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
