3 Through faith [pistis] we understand [noeo] that the worlds [aion] were framed [katartizo] by the word [rhema] of God [theos], so [eis] that things which [ho] are seen [blepo] were [ginomai] not [me] made [ginomai] of [ek] things which do appear [phaino]. KJV-Interlinear
3 By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible. NASB
In the beginning of time, none of us were around. Science has looked at the makeup and actions for the universe as they exist now, and science has tried to reconstruct the beginnings of the universe and life based on the knowledge we have today.
4 'Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding, NASB
But here in Hebrews we learn again that God did not create the universe, even life, based on materials that were on hand in the beginning. God created all that is, out of nothing. That is the point of this passage.
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth NASB
The word for 'created' here is 'bara,' meaning to create something out of nothing. This is the word used for the original creation of the universe. It is the word used for the creation of mans life. If you have obtained the recent Online Studies E-Book, then you will be able to review our studies in Genesis.
You are a living soul. When you were born, God created 'bara' your human life out of nothing and inserted it into your soul (also created out of nothing). Both were inserted into your physical body which was caused to breathe as human life initially entered into your biological body.
Science states that matter can be neither created nor destroyed. That is not true. Science does not even know what the very foundations of matter are. Every time we discover something small, we discover that there is something else even smaller. Every time we discover the distance of the outer edges of the universe, a better telescope comes along and we discover that the outer edges of the universe are even further away than previously thought.
Even the concept of life is controversial. Yet when a person dies, we say 'absent from the body and face to face with the Lord.' What is absent? Life. Human life resided in the soul which resided in the physical body, but the physical body was not human life. When the body dies, human life does not die, it moves out.
And actually is the evacuation of human life out from the body, that causes the physical body to die.
One of the toughest things in life, is sorting through all of the human philosophy, theory, and traditional thinking, and trying to determine what is true, and what is presumed true by human speculation or theory.
8 See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ. NASB
The worlds, that is, the planets, the moons, the distant stars and so forth, were all invented, designed, and created by God. God created them out of nothing. He did not use existing material to design and create the universe or even life. He invented matter and all that we know in this physical universe.
God even designed and defined the physical laws that would supervise the universe. This includes all of the laws of physics, to all of the laws that rule common everyday economics.
9 For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast. NASB
God did all of this in a single instant. God spoke and it was all so.
1 Cor. 2:9-10
9 but just as it is written, 'Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, And which have not entered the heart of man, All that God has prepared for those who love Him.' 10 For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. NASB
The above is a quote from Isaiah - Isa. 64:4 and 65:17
God reveals all of the truth of the universe to those who are positive toward Him. Though we do not learn how to make a better mouse trap from the Bible, we do learn how to discern the good trap from the bad one. Clarity of thought and discernment of truth come easily from the study of the Word of God.
And it is not even us who does the thinking and sorting out of all of the fog of the world, it is the Holy Spirit who makes everything clear and perspicuous for us, so that we can see clearly the real from the fake.
We already look heavenward and see that the complexities of the universe must of had a designer, but none of us were there in the beginning. So faith is already at work when we simply believe that God did what He says He did.
Our passage so states that God created all that is, and that He did not use anything which is present now, as the source material of that original creation.
The nebula theory, followed by the tidal theory, followed by the steady state theory, followed by the big bang theory, none of them hold up when objectively scrutinized. Each subsequent theory has replaced the earlier theory. Even the last theory has recently come into question as the amount of matter in the outer reaches of the universe should not be there, if indeed an original explosion started it all, and yet we keep discovering and ever growing, as well as an ever larger and more densely populated universe with each new enhancement in telescopic technology.
Yet science keeps on trying to chase after the absurd, as is the nature of any form of thought which rejects God and doctrine. Philosophy, and even many cases of scientific attempts to discover, are no more than mental doodling on the scratch paper of ideas. 'What if this, then what if that?' And so forth.
Simple faith comprehends that which the mind of man, no matter how brilliant, refuses to see. And by means of the simple, God confounds the wisdom of humanity.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
