John 3:3-8

Lesson # John 3:3-8
Study Material - John 3:3-8

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

John 3:3-8

3 Jesus answered and said to him, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.' 4 Nicodemus said to Him, 'How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born, can he?' 5 Jesus answered, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 'That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 'Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.' 8 'The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.'

Nicodemus comes asking about the status of his own soul. He inquires in secret as to the passage to heaven, but not through Christ. Nicodemus recognizes that here, in Jesus, is a connection to God, but he hasn't figured just what that connection is.

Jesus answers, 'Truly, truly'. Jesus answers emphatically, unequivocally. That which is about to be said is of fact and certain, and not for negotiation. There is no other possibility other than the means that is about to be disclosed. Nicodemus comes with academic knowledge. He comes with knowledge of the miracles, of the scriptures, of the history of Jesus, or rather the chronological history. But Nicodemus misses out on, and lacks an understanding of the meaning of the scriptures. He missed the whole point of the prophecies concerning Christ's death and resurrection, of the failure of the Mosaic Law, and the need for the new law, which only Christ can bring as a result of the victory won on the Cross.

You must be born again. Not physically born again as you were when you were a wee little infant and came from your mothers womb. Not as you were born out of water, out of the sack which held you for nine months inside your mother. But born a second time, and this time born of the spirit.

The first birth did not save you. In fact we are all born spiritually dead. We are not born spiritually alive, then lose it, then need to have it replaced again a second time. We are born spiritually dead. We are born body and soul only. Lacking a human spirit at the point of our physical birth. Our condemnation at birth is from Adam's original sin, which is passed down from Adam, and subsequently through every male to each generation. The source of spiritual death is from the male. A genetically transmitted defect, in the form of the sin nature which none of us can avoid.

As a result of out spiritual death, we need to have a second birth, a spiritual birth, in order to gain a human spirit, which will serve as a home for eternal life which God imputes to us at the point of our belief in Jesus Christ.

Apart from this second birth, no one can gain access to heaven. No one can gain access to God. Everyone who lacks this second birth is isolated and prevented from having any kind of relationship with God. Nicodemus, lacks an understanding regarding this. 'How can this be'? The unbeliever can not understand the spiritual. They can only have access to the academic knowledge, a memory of words only, but not the wisdom, not the understanding of it.

We have to be born physically alive. We have to come into existence, which occurs at the point of our physical birth, when God imputes human life into our soul. When we first take that breath of life outside of the womb. Second we need to be born again in the spiritual sense. Born of the spirit, the human spirit regenerated inside us in order to have access to God. Apart from this rebirth, there is no access into heaven, period.

Being born physically is not enough. That which is flesh is flesh only, but that which is spirit is now no longer only flesh, but is spirit. Which simply means that you are saved, and no longer destined for destruction in the fires of hell and eternal separation from God.

We know that there is wind because we feel it. We see its results from the movement of trees. But we do not know from where it originates, nor can we track it. Weathermen are still only guessing even in our current time of satellites and high tech weather forecasting. Granted they have educated guesses, but often they still get it wrong. Weather patterns shift at the last moment and we all get a surprise, or something unexpected.

The spiritual life is too, a mystery. But only a mystery to the unbeliever and to the young believer. To the unbeliever it is a total mystery except for the gospel. The only thing that an unbeliever can understand is the gospel, and faith in Christ. And this too is communicated to the unbeliever by the Holy Spirit, who communicates all doctrine to us, by the way, and the Holy Spirit makes the gospel clear to the unbeliever, so that the opportunity is available to the unbeliever for salvation.

The unbeliever cannot understand Bible doctrine beyond the gospel because they do not have the mechanism for processing that spiritual information. Trying to teach an unbeliever the advanced principles of doctrine is a failed task. So the wind principle applies to the unbeliever. It is there, but there are too many unknowns to understand its source or destination.

In communicating doctrine to any unbeliever, we need to start with the gospel first, then, once they have believed in Jesus Christ and are saved, the issue in their life is attitude toward doctrine and a daily intake of doctrine. A little at a time, just as a babe eats at first, gradually taking in more as the appetite grows, and the capacity grows in its ability to handle more. Then eventually solid foods, then the more exotic foods and so forth.

Jesus teaches all this to Nicodemus, but he is still in the dark. Eventually Jesus will give him the gospel in verse 16.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
