John 5:17-18

Lesson # John 5:17-18
Study Material - John 5:17-18

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

John 5:17-18

17 But He answered them, 'My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.' 18 For this cause therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.

The legalistic ones accuse Jesus of blasphemy once again. But now there is an additional charge. Jesus has identified himself as the So of God, He is the son of no other, and therefore as Son, then deity, therefore equal with God.

This statement of Jesus is clear now, even to those who would reject Him. There are only two issues in life that matter. The first is, 'What think ye of Christ?' This is the basis for determining whether you will be saved or not. Believe on the Son and receive everlasting life. Reject Him and yours is eternal condemnation.

Now the issue is clear to those who would attack Christ. He has been fulfilling prophecy ever since His birth and very few have connected the dots. God rebuilt the earth in six days, then rested. Does this mean that he went to sleep for the remainder of eternity? No. This rest is the state of mind. This is the rest which we strive for, a relaxed mental attitude, from our advancement to spiritual maturity. Does this mean that we can sleep in late everyday for the rest of our lives? No.

We still have to get up and brush our teeth. Is that not work? We still have to pull on our clothes. Is that not work? We still have to be responsible in life. That is definitely a lot of work. Just breathing is work.

Work is an expense of energy, either physical or mental, toward the accomplishment of something. Jesus has already given examples of how David ate the bread from the temple. But the most obvious work is the actions of priests slaughtering the animals in the sacrifices. And they do this on the Sabbath!!!

We went over the sacrifices in Leviticus. Have you ever led a yearling bull to an alter, tried to tie him down, then slaughtered him? Few of us if any, could even accomplish this unless we had a lot of help and a good deal of hydraulic equipment to help us process the bull.

Now we don't sacrifice bulls these days, but that is not the point. It is a lot of work. Again, don't shepherds water their herds everyday, Sabbath included? So work is a selectively defined concept by the Pharisees, and even ambiguous to boot. They decide what to include in the definition and what should be excluded. Very selective, and only that which is convenient to their argument.

They are not interested in the good Jesus has been doing. Name one bad thing that He has done. That list is non-existent. List the good these self righteous types have done. List their accomplishments. Look around at the crowds following Christ, the weak, the lame, the ill. Why haven't their illnesses been healed prior to Christ's arrival? Because man does not have the means to solve his problems. And in many cases, man does not want the means to solve them. The perpetuation of problems means security for many positions within the Sanhedrin, within the Pharisees, and so forth. Politics loves misery. It is sustained by misery, greed, and such things. Liberal politicians love the attention they receive. Good politicians simply cannot cope with the magnitude of the worlds bureaucracies. People simply cannot control the jungle. God is the only place to turn to for help.

God works daily. God has never stopped working. He sustains the universe. That is work. God sustains the universe through the Son, the heir of all things, Heb. 1.

These conceited people have the scriptures, Isaiah, Daniel and so forth. They have read and know that there is a Son of God, they know that He is the heir and will establish His kingdom here on earth. What they reject is His sacrifice for our sins. They follow the sacrifices daily and certainly on the special feast days. They perform the very things called for in the scriptures which they read daily or certainly weekly. But they haven't got a clue as to what it is all about, because they have rejected the first question facing all of humanity, 'What think ye of Christ?'

By the way the second question is, 'What think ye of Bible doctrine?' This applies to believers only and deals with what they do or should do each day of the rest of their lives, in so far as their personal spiritual growth (or lack of it) is concerned.

The Pharisees, pretend to defend the honor of God - someone they don't even know. Their show is not for God, or for the angels. Their show of opinion is for the ignorant masses. Only the naive can be impressed by stupidity. What their self righteousness meets with Jesus sound argument, then they become enraged, frustrated, and their only course of action is not violence. They want to kill the very person who is helping all peoples who come to Him.

He is making Himself equal with God, because He is God. People should have considered this issue, rather than condemn it. There was an overwhelming volume of prophecy being fulfilled. Prophecy which they knew, but just refused to see. Their self made regulations were more important than human needs.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
