John 5:33-35

Lesson # John 5:33-35
Study Material - John 5:33-35

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

John 5:33-35

33 'You have sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. 34 'But the witness which I receive is not from man, but I say these things that you may be saved. 35 'He was the lamp that was burning and was shining and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.

Some time prior to this, before the appearance of Christ on the scene, when John the Baptist was out in the wilderness, these same people who were arguing with Jesus, went to John the Baptist and they became infatuated with his style and his message.

Had they believed in John's message, they would not now be antagonistic against Christ, because Johns message was Christ, 'Behold the Lamb of God.'

Now where was their initial infatuation? John was accused of being a devil and was now presently in prison, labeled a heretic of sorts. The crowd that is negative toward Christ is a fickle crowd. They go with the emotional and when that burns out, they become bored and move off to something else. All the while they fall back on their foundation of beliefs of ritual and habit. Neither of which carry any power, but are impotent and worthless in themselves.

Here is God himself standing before them and they reject Him despite all the proofs He has already demonstrated, and the independent testimonies He will, in the next few verses, give them. Yet they will follow a strange man (for a time) from out in the desert, without question. Not a very objective decision making process. But then this happens even in our current day with flamboyant politicians (liberals of course) whose words are popular, but whose motives and leadership are worthless. I know, I know, there are some weird conservatives (ultra types) out there too.

But John was a mere man. Christ does not depend on John's testimony nor that of any 'hew-mon' to certify His credentials. If the lightning had not come, Elijah would have looked like a fool. Mans words are but words unless and until Gods policy is found to support them.

John was but a mere illumination, a subordinate luminary of the truth. The sun is the source, the moon reflects that light, thus a subordinate illumination, and that is John. John was a light pointing to the true light, Jesus Christ. John knew his doctrine and that was what burned inside him which originally led people to follow him. But John was a transient light. He was there then he was gone. Truth is always there with us. Truth is Jesus Christ. He need not be present for us to enjoy Him, but He is always present when we have His words (Bible doctrine) in our soul.

Those who stand before Christ in their defiance and hate reveled in the light of John (John's message) but they never walked in that light. They never made it a part of their daily life. Just as they revel in the circus effects of Jesus' miracles. They see, but they never seize the wisdom.

Now here is the challenge and the bottom line. It is easy to be entertained, but wisdom and maturity comes with a price. Albeit our price is far less than that which Christ paid to give us our opportunity for a spiritual life.

Many come to doctrine but never really hear it. They put in the time either out of habit, or for appearance purposes for others (maybe family, maybe others). Regardless, they just do not connect the dots and all their logged in time in Bible study comes to nothing. Sooner or later they will hit a major problem in their life and having zero spiritual resources, they complain that doctrine doesn't work.

They will sell out themselves (bitterness) and others (hate), just to satisfy their own selfishness and ego. Their foresight is not for a solution but for the scratching of their emotions (bitterness, revenge, implacability, and so forth). After all just as it is easier to be entertained in life than to become responsible, it is easier to hold on to ones anger than it is to exercise self control.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
