John 12:17-19

Lesson # John 12:17-19
Study Material - John 12:17-19

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

John 12:17-19

17 The people [ochlos] therefore [oun] that was [on] with [meta] him [autos] when [hote] he called [phoneo] Lazarus [Lazaros] out of [ek] his grave [mnemeion] , and [kai] raised [egeiro] him [autos] from [ek] the dead [nekros] , bare record [martureo] .
18 For this [touto] cause [dia] the people [ochlos] also [kai] met [hupantao] him [autos] , for that [hoti] they heard [akouo] that [autos] he had done [poieo] this [touto] miracle [semeion] .
19 The Pharisees [Pharisaios] therefore [oun] said [epo] among [pros] themselves [heautou] , Perceive ye [theoreo] how [hoti] ye prevail [opheleo] nothing [ou] [oudeis] ? behold [ide] , the world [kosmos] is gone [aperchomai] after [opiso] him [autos] . KJV-Interlinear

John 12:17-19

17 And so the multitude who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb, and raised him from the dead, were bearing Him witness. 18 For this cause also the multitude went and met Him, because they heard that He had performed this sign. 19 The Pharisees therefore said to one another, 'You see that you are not doing any good; look, the world has gone after Him.' NASB

Jealousy and frustration are two very bad ingredients that when brought together will often lead to violence. So the chief priests see the grand entrance of Jesus, who in their own minds is but a carpenters son. A fly in their soup, which is annoying to their way of life, and needs to be dealt with soon.

The people on the other hand are wild with rumor. Here is a man among them who has raised the dead. He is the Messiah perhaps? But no matter. All the rumors of healing and recoveries from physical impairment, which have dominated the publics eye for many, many months now have taken their toll on the publics attitude toward Jesus and in turn against the chief priests.

Thus their own comment, 'You see that you are not doing any good.' This means simply, 'All we have done against this Jesus, has turned against us. No matter what we do, He excels in the eyes of the public.'

People turned out to see Jesus because of the rumors they had heard from others and even from eye witnesses to the miracle. Jesus did not perform His miracles in private, but in full view of the public's eye. And so it is with Bible doctrine. Nothing is kept secret. All is there for everyone to examine and to determine its truth and worth.

The proof of His identity, the proof of His works are all in full view of people, and angels, and anyone and anything else that cares. And this is important because the rejection of the chief priests and those who just refused to believe in Christ, is without excuse, and without any basis in reason or fact. They reject Jesus Christ out of pure stubbornness promoted by arrogance and their own blind selfish interests.

People came to see what all the commotion was about. People came to see out of curiosity. People came to see because they were hurting in life and sought someone who could help.

No doubt the Pharisees, Sadducees, and such stood on their roof tops, stood at their windows, stood in their doors, and just watched the entire affair. Remember they have a plan!!! But their plan is nothing more than talk. They have had ample time to make a move against Jesus, but instead they will enter into a debate with Him in the Temple, and for several days. Recall our recent study in Matthew. They will not really do anything because they are both cowards (they do not want to upset the crowd who holds Jesus in high regard for the moment), and they are frustrated (helpless to do anything to stop Jesus' popularity).

Though it will be the powers that be who will crucify Jesus, it will come only as Jesus brings all of the necessary ingredients together to accomplish His own sacrifice. Jesus Christ controls history. He will see that the crucifixion will occur on the very and day and hour that it is supposed to, and not one moment either sooner or later in history.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
