KJV-Interlinear John 18:28 28 They led Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter into the Praetorium in order that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. NASB Luke 23:1 1 Then the whole body of them arose and brought Him before Pilate. NASB For those who are interested, the details of the Passover Feast, and the Feast of Unleavened Bread are detailed in Ex. 12:6, Ex. 12:15-17, and Lev. 23:5. These are two feasts which occur consecutively. The first feast, the Feast of Passover is a one day feast. It occurs on the beginning of the 14 day of the month of Nisan, which is the same designation as the month of Abib, the Month of Flowers or generally April in accordance with our western calendar. See the calendar chart on the Index page on the web site. Remember too that the Jewish day begins at 6 p.m. each evening and runs until 6 p.m. of the next day. So beginning at 6 p.m. on what we would call the calendar day of the 13th, is really the beginning of the 14th on the Jewish calendar. Then at noon on the actual day of the 14th, all unleaven was to be removed from the household, and the most sacred sacrifice was to be held that afternoon between noon and 3 p.m. Followed by its consumption in the evening meal which began after 6 p.m. on the evening of the 14th, which is the same as the beginning of the 15th day of Nisan, which is the beginning of the celebration of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. This latter feast runs for seven days. Since these two feasts were so closely related, the entire eight day period was often referred to as Passover. Jesus has already celebrated the first Passover meal on the previous evening, Tuesday. He celebrated it with his apostles. This is the first meal, which represents the hasty meal which the Israelites ate on the evening of their departure from Egypt. They were commanded to eat quickly, be packed, dressed and ready to go at a moments notice. Then the death angel came over Egypt and you should know the rest of that story, as the first born of sin (Egypt) was then taken by God and killed as punishment for their sin. Now we are in the early morning of the 14th day of Nisan, Wednesday. Jesus has already eaten the first Passover meal, on the prior evening. By 9 a.m., Wednesday, He will be hanging on the Cross. And by noon the supernatural darkness will fall over the entire world and judgment will commence against Jesus until 3 p.m. His work finished, Jesus will exhale and die. He will be placed in the grave before sundown (before 6 p.m.) as per Deu. 21:23, where no one who is hung on the tree can remain there after dark, but must be placed into a grave. Then He will remain in the grave for three complete days and three complete nights: 1 - Wed evening until Thurs. Evening, 2 - Thurs. Evening until Fri. Evening, 3 - Fri. Evening until Sat. Evening. Following the three days in the grave He will arise - sometime after 6 p.m. Saturday and prior to Sunday morning. Most folks believe that He arose after midnight Saturday night. Jesus was not in the grave when it was inspected Sunday morning. He had already risen. But that is getting a little ahead of ourselves. So you should see now that the leadership of Judea was in a bit of a hurry, early that morning, to get rid of Jesus. The formal trial was brief at best. The decision to kill Jesus was decided, but as we mentioned before there were road blocks in front of the Judean authorities. First they had no right to execute Jesus via crucifixion. They could have stoned him, but then that would require a big explanation to the public as to just why judges were involved in the stoning of a condemned man. That would appear to be too much of a cover up. Besides they would have had to wait for the required three days before carrying out an execution and that means even more of a delay and the possibility of the masses arising against them for harming a man who had performed so many miracles. Not to mention that they were in the middle of their most important Feast celebration of the year, so that would further delay the legal proceedings. In Mark 15:1 we read that the powers that be held a meeting and during that meeting they mapped out their plan for getting rid of Jesus. How do we know? Because of what they did following that meeting. They went to Pilate, a Roman. They could not get rid of Jesus, but the Romans could. Soooo. Off to Pilate's house they went. Now John tells us a little more. They did not enter into the house of a gentile but remained out in the courtyard so that they would not become defiled for the Passover. This is a reference to the festivities that were to take place in the afternoon and evening later this day. Evil people will create rules (man made rules) and then they will hold them in extremely high regard such that their rules become more important than truth or even common sense. When a written law becomes more important than truth or the welfare of people, then that legislation becomes evil. This allows people to legislate controls over people, and that paves the way for abuses. People can simply become criminals for nor observing some legislative rule or law. This is common when it comes to politics, but it is also a problem when various religions of philosophies get into the minds of parents and they place themselves of their children in harms way because of erroneous beliefs, such as withholding medical treatment and such other kinds of nonsense. This concept of magnifying rules has many applications, both formal and informal. You can find it in the functions of social clubs as well as in national politics. The elders were hypocrites obviously. They held that their regulations were more important than God who was standing right before them. God who had overwhelming proofs of His identity. Proofs of which they ignored. They placed their trust in the false power of legislated words on paper over the true power of God. They relied on their legislation and regulations because it served to keep them in high positions and power (control over people) and it kept them in wealth (their merchandised access to God) which people had to pay. To rebel would mean ostracism or even death. The leadership of Judea had no interest in the welfare of its population. Their only interest was in themselves. Thus the rush to judgment and execution of Jesus Christ.
