Luke 1:14-17

Lesson # Luke 1:14-17
Study Material - Luke 1:14-17

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Luke 1:14-17

14 'And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. 15 'For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he will drink no wine or liquor; and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb. 16 'And he will turn back many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 'And it is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to the children, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous; so as to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.'

Great joy will come to those who are friends of Zacharias and his wife Elizabeth, as they celebrate in the pregnancy of Elizabeth and the expected joy that a child will bring to the family after so long a time. But also joy will come to many more as they begin to realize the intended purpose of John's ministry. Of the doctrine he will teach and the baptism's he will perform to those who become positive toward Christ. The birth of John as a forerunner to the birth of Christ and to the ministry of Christ, brings great joy in the heavenly's as well, for there is a huge angelic host watching the history of man and this is an event that has been foretold for many centuries.

Matt. 11:11, John is complimented as to his great purpose in life. There is none that has been born of women that is as great as John, but those who seek God in their spiritual advance in life can become as great or even greater.

He will neither touch strong drink and will consequently live the life following the Nazarite vow which basically means he will concentrate his life on God's Word and not be influenced by anything else in life, virtually no social life. God has raised him up for one purpose and through John's own natural desire and choice, he pursued God's plan for his life.

The word 'ek' which means 'out from', and in this case from the point of birth forward in his life. Out from the womb. Some translations say 'in' the womb but that is a little off. This means from the point of birth, from early in his life, out from the womb, which is after he has been born. John had in himself the desire, from a very early age, for doctrine.

The word 'pletho' which means influenced. John will be influenced by the Holy Spirit, even from infancy. From a very young age he will be positive toward God and will pursue learning the scriptures with a passion. This is not the indwelling of the Holy Spirit which we enjoy in this Church Age. That event did not occur until Pentecost following the Cross. The Holy Spirit influences by means of teaching us doctrine, and John studied relentlessly because of his insatiable desire for knowledge of God. This will lead him into a ministry of evangelism of sorts. Though a Levite, he could have served in the church, but God had a different plan for John's life. He was going to find himself in the desert where there were no people. There he would preach and baptize, and God would bring people to him.

Note also the contrast in influences. John will be influenced by God's Word rather than influence from alcoholic beverage, or social life such as women and hobbies and other things that typically influence and catch the eye of young men. John was focused from early on toward Bible doctrine and not to the world and its entertainment opportunities.

Mal. 4:5, Elijah is going to be sent to proclaim the Christ. Not the exact Elijah, not a resurrected Elijah in this case, but one who will act in the power that Elijah acted, which is God's Word. This forerunner is John the Baptist. So by means of the same power, that of the Holy Spirit through Bible doctrine, that Elijah had, that same power that is available to us even here today, John would execute his ministry and many would express their positive volition toward Christ and believe and therefore, become saved and receive eternal life.

This was one of the signs of the coming of the Christ. Now people who might not believe in the virgin pregnancy, might believe in it if just prior to it, a woman who was suddenly beyond her child bearing years was suddenly to conceive. Now note, that the fires of desire were rekindled in both Zacharias and his wife. They had to have sex in order to get her pregnant. So they did not go into that routine of disinterest in each other just because they were old. God very graciously gave them back their desires for each other and the magic happened!!

It is never too late for anything. The biggest barrier to most people in accomplishing a given task is 'self imposed' barriers. If you decide that you can't, then you won't. But for God, nothing is impossible. How does it go? Quitters never win. Well if you fall away from your Bible study you will most certainly lose out in life. But if you pursue your Bible study, don't get discouraged, hang tough, then your accomplishments will most likely surprise you.

John will be sent out into the desert, in virtually an unknown status, and God will lead people to him. No matter what you do in life, no matter where you are in life, God has a plan specific for you. You will function in that plan only if you advance in your spiritual life. And your location on this earth, your social status, your color, etc. are not relevant. What is relevant is the spiritual status of your soul. Therefore, seek Christ first, and He will promote you.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
