Luke 2:48-52

Lesson # Luke 2:48-52
Study Material - Luke 2:48-52

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Luke 2:48-52

48 And when they saw Him, they were astonished; and His mother said to Him, 'Son, why have You treated us this way? Behold, Your father and I have been anxiously looking for You.' 49 And He said to them, 'Why is it that you were looking for Me? Did you not know that I had to be in My Father's house?' 50 And they did not understand the statement which He had made to them. 51 And He went down with them, and came to Nazareth; and He continued in subjection to them; and His mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

Joseph and Mary had looked for Jesus for three days and found Him in the last place that they looked. The last place which should have been the first place. Some might think that there is a correlation in these three days and the three days He spent in the grave. Many may have thought Christ lost to them during those sorrowful days, but his parents had this experience happen for a reason.

They were the parents, the earthly parents of the humanity of the God of the universe, the creator of the universe, the one who will be victorious over the forces of Satan and sin and death. The one who but has only to speak and things will happen. It does not appear that during the thirty years they lived with Jesus that they requested that he make them rich or build them a mansion, or any other such thing. But at this point Jesus was lost to them and a short panic overcame them. What would God say if they had lost His Son? But this is not the case. They had misplaced their child and went frantically looking for him. Most parents with any sense at all would be equally fearful if their child wandered off and they could not immediately find him, let alone three days later. Most people would be filled with worry and anxiety of not knowing where or in what condition their child was in. And, heaven forbid, there might be those who lose their child forever and never have any closure as to their whereabouts. This would rip a person right down to the core of their soul. But no matter what your situation, there is always an answer and a solution. The worst possible situation in life is to lose God in ones life. Other things are but temporary, but God is eternal. And if you search fervently enough you will find Him and He will again have fellowship with you, if, of course, you abide by His rules.

Joseph and Mary found Jesus and were amazed at finding him not only in the middle of the teachers, but actually held in esteem by them. No doubt they heard some of the conversation between the teachers and Jesus, and probably realized again that they had a very special child in their care. But Mary, typical of a mother, has to ask why he frightened them so. And made the mistake of referring to Joseph as his father. Joseph was certainly like a step father, but God was the real Father.

And Jesus quietly reminded her of His destiny in life. That His place is in the temple and in fellowship with His Father, who is God the Father. The temple at that time was a structure of stone in Jerusalem, but the real temple is in each of our souls, and that is where we find Christ today as we learn doctrine and fill our souls with His Word.

Jesus was only 12 years old, and He knew and understood His place in history. He also knew and understood his role as the child of Joseph and Mary and He was obedient to them as a child should be to his parents. No doubt he did his chores and school work, and certainly studied His scriptures. The deity of Christ has always known the scriptures, but the humanity of Christ had to learn just as you and I do. And He did.

Joseph and Mary did not understand the prophetical destiny in this first advent. They knew that his destiny was to be King forever and that His house would be the palace of palaces, but there was first the work of the Cross for salvation. But Mary remembered al these things as is typical of the female, to treasure the special memories of life. But we all read and study doctrine and it is not always clear to us at first. Sometimes we might role our eyes and wonder where that thought came from, but we just tuck the thought away for later reference. In time God always makes things clear. It the doctrine is false then it falls apart under its own weight, but if true then it is supported by other scripture and common sense and so forth.

The person who is positive toward Bible doctrine is patient and understands that spiritual growth is a life long commitment. We grow a little at a time every day of our life. But the person who is impatient and wants a solution right now, who wants to read the entire Bible on a three day weekend and then have that pot of gold drop in their lap is quickly disenchanted and generally drifts away from doctrine until some real disaster drops in their lap instead. God is not a genie or a magic wand. His plan for your life is to advance to spiritual maturity and stay there for your entire life, then his promise will make itself known to you. Call to Me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things. Sometimes these great and mighty things are revealed only to you and others around you will not see or understand them at all.

John 2:22, even the disciples had heard all that Jesus had taught them, but they did not comprehend until after the Cross. Then they remembered and understood. So you too will learn in Gods good time, not yours.

Jesus continued to grow in wisdom and stature. He grew up as we all do. He had his daily chores, daily hygiene, daily studies, social interactions, peer pressures, decisions, and so forth. But he unlike us, knew his destiny. He did not hurry it, nor fear it. He did not avoid it either. We too should not be anxious to jump into a fire just to get something over with in our life, but go about our business in a methodical manner. Do your studies, chores, work, responsibilities as required. Don't get lazy and wait for the second coming. That would be irresponsible. God has a plan for your life. You may invent the next computer innovation, or next cookbook, or next best book seller, or simply dig ditches which someone has to do. Whether you are high n the ladder or low in society makes no difference. What does make a difference is your attitude toward God and your consistency in learning His Word, and subsequent advancement to spiritual maturity, which should be your number one objective in life.

Those who advance spiritually and remain in fellowship are in favor with God, just as Jesus was. God honors those who honor Him, and we honor Him by growing up spiritually.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
