Luke 3:7-14

Lesson # Luke 3:7-14
Study Material - Luke 3:7-14

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Luke 3:7-14

7 He therefore began saying to the multitudes who were going out to be baptized by him, 'You brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 'Therefore bring forth fruits in keeping with repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father,' for I say to you that God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 9 'And also the axe is already laid at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.' 10 And the multitudes were questioning him, saying, 'Then what shall we do?' 11 And he would answer and say to them, 'Let the man who has two tunics share with him who has none; and let him who has food do likewise.' 12 And some tax-gatherers also came to be baptized, and they said to him, 'Teacher, what shall we do?' 13 And he said to them, 'Collect no more than what you have been ordered to.' 14 And some soldiers were questioning him, saying, 'And what about us, what shall we do?" And he said to them, 'Do not take money from anyone by force, or accuse anyone falsely, and be content with your wages.'

Here we have more of the 'viper' dialog. We saw some of it in Matthew, but now we see more of it here. Remember the male offspring of the female dogs? Well these are those of whom John the Baptist speaks. They were people who were out on a curiosity trip. Taking a drive out in the country to see what all the commotion was about. These people were not really in interested in Christ or even God in general. This was a news story and they were curious. Today we have television and tabloids in the grocery store, then they had to go see the story for themselves.

John gave them the best advice they could ever get, change your attitude and start producing in accordance with Gods commands. That is, believe in Christ and be saved. But their attitude is, that they have Abraham, so what more could they need? And by the way, what does having Abraham in ones ancestry have to do with anything anyway?

They trend of thought was that if you were a descendant of Abraham, then you automatically had an in with God. Seems logical, right? Well then if that were true, then other logical ideas might be true, and then we would have a super race here and there, or a super culture, or a superior color of people, or a superior sex. Hummmm!

The world is full of idiots who have a super gimmick of one sort or another, which usually makes them super rich and you super stupid if you subscribe to the gimmick. And over the centuries, these super groups seem to have died out. The super dudes do have their limits I guess.

Anyway, Abraham was the super fix of those days. Forget God, Abraham was even better. And John had a little humor for them too. The rocks could be made descendants of Abraham in an instant and made by God. So where is the argument now. They were nothing more than rocks, or chemicals of the earth as it were. These people had forgotten where they had originally come from. They needed to go back several more generations to Adam for their true ancestry, which was worthless dust. Yet n their minds they were boastful of their relationship with Abraham. Seems like one would want to have a relationship with a living God, rather than a corpse over 2000 years old! See their confusion?

John makes it clear that judgment, the ax, is already set for those who reject God. Yet again they ask questions as to what they should do? And doing is not the issue. Changing their minds, changing their attitude, believing in Christ is the issue, not doing things. Yet John gives them a list of things they won't do anyway. Share your property, share your food. But they are selfish people, those who live by their sin natures. They would not even be willing to share what they have with those who have not, if it meant getting into heaven. And of course you can't get into heaven by doing anything anyway, but John puts this simple test to them anyway to show that they are a selfish people. They won't change their minds about Christ and they won't change their minds about helping people either. They only want someone to help them and for selfish reasons only. They would use John, then cast him away.

They do not listen either. The tax collectors ask again what they should do, and they even call him teacher, implying that he is the teacher and they are the students desiring to learn. John has already told them what to do. Change your minds and produce fruit in keeping with repentance. Be consistent in following Gods plan and requirements for salvation. Yet they reject that teaching and want something else. So John tells them again what they do not want to hear. Stop taking illegal taxes from those who can't afford it. Taxpayers regularly took more than they were authorized to. They were crooks protected by the law. But they were not willing to give up this lucrative life style and John knew it. Remember the 'vipers' comment. He is still talking to these people here in this passage.

Now the soldiers take a turn and are told to stop be corrupt as well. Stop taking money be intimidation or force. Stop falsifying the facts of an encounter. Stop abusing the common citizens. Thus was the state of society in the time just prior to the introduction of Christ.

Common people were disinterested, religious people were disinterested, government employees were disinterested, the military was disinterested. All these were phony to the principles of the work that they did. It was an 'every man for himself' attitude.

Anyone who rejects God, lives a lie. Their morals and their values are compromised. They are not teachable. They do not listen. They are only interested in that which will satisfy some lustful immediate need or desire. By ignoring doctrine, you open yourself up to this kind of life. By staying away from doctrine long enough, you lose sight of the truth all together and when it hits you in the face you do not recognize it and so you miss the opportunity of having possession of it.

Rejection of God and avoiding a daily Bible study is extremely dangerous. You will only suffer. There is no other means of solving your life's problems. Do as these people did and look for solutions everywhere but in the Bible, and you will never find them. You will simply walk away with an apathetic attitude as they did. Jesus Christ, God Himself was going to walk up soon and they did not even know it. Male sure you do not lose your opportunities in life as they did.

Believe, if you haven't already, confess your sins and get into fellowship with God, and study, study, study for the rest of your life.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
