Luke 4:38-40

Lesson # Luke 4:38-40
Study Material - Luke 4:38-40

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Luke 4:38-40

38 And He arose and left the synagogue, and entered Simon's home. Now Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever; and they made request of Him on her behalf. 39 And standing over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her; and she immediately arose and waited on them. 40 And while the sun was setting, all who had any sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and laying His hands on every one of them, He was healing them.

These final verses give us many contrasts with respect to what Christ was here for, and what people looked to Christ for in their lives.

Most folks want a quick fix for their immediate needs or wants. Christ teaches us (that is if we are patient enough to sit still and listen) that the state of our soul is far more important than the state of our physical being.

Jesus went to Simon's house. Simon, who is later called Peter, is married. Note that Simon is a married person, yet called to the ministry of Christ. Marriage is not and never has been a restriction to ones ability or call to preach Gods Word. Too many cults, churches, monasteries, organizations of various sorts seem to think that marriage is a distraction or a taboo to ones membership in their organization. Couldn't be further from the truth. Remaining single or even remaining a virgin does not bring you closer to God. That is of course nonsense. Spirituality has nothing to do with the physical body (biological) or ones marital status. Certainly it has nothing to do with ones sexual organs (which is merely flesh, muscle, organs of various types, fluids of various types, and so forth), or even ones sexual preferences. And people can get very weird in that respect. Choosing not to marry is a matter of personal choice, but it in itself, does not enhance ones spiritual life. It may give a person more time to study (in the proper sense) since there are no marital distractions, bills, needs of the spouse, etc. You can certainly have a very strong spiritual life, even while married. Again it is all a matter of personal choice. Bible doctrine in the soul will drive your sense of need or wants in this regard, and it will all come out of your natural function in life.

Simon's mother-in-law was ill. The demon possessed the man before, and that was a possession which was voluntary by that man. Christ removed that demon from the man and restored him to health. Now the mother-in-law was stricken by an involuntary possession of a sort. She had a high fever. We are all subject to disease. The disease is not specified but the symptom of a high fever, a very high fever, is specified. She was near death, or could have been very near it.

Again Jesus rebukes the fever and it was gone. He as God, has power over not only the illegal seizure of ones person by alien presence's (demon possession), but of ill health (the disease causing the fever). The mother-in-law is cured immediately and is in perfect health. She rises immediately and resumes her duties (those which she is obviously already accustomed to) and goes about her business of taking care of her guests - serving, seeing after their comfort, snacks, whatever a hostess does.

Evening has come and the Sabbath is over. The Jewish day in that time, ran from sundown to sundown, or about 6 pm on one day to 6 pm of the following day. Today we recognize our days as changing over at midnight.

Now that the Sabbath has ended, people begin coming out of the wood work. From all over they come to Jesus to be cured, have their demons removed and so forth. People still miss the point of His first arrival here on earth, and of His ministry. The soul is more important than the physical body. We all have our problems. If Christ were only here to fill our orders, 'My Need List', then he would not have had to come to earth as a man. He could have just remained in heaven and heard the prayers, as a genie perhaps, and granted the wishes as they came in. But God is not a genie.

The lesson here is, that Christ is the living word. Folks who look to their own personal needs as the priority in their life, have missed the point entirely for their life. Life does not exist only here on earth and encompass our entire existence. In fact the bulk of our life will exist in heaven in eternity. Eternity is a far greater number (billions, trillions, gazillions of years) than any physical life span (60, 80, 100 years) that will ever exist on this planet. Any good investor will focus on the long term rather than the short term.

Only with His spoken word, the fever left her. He then laid His hands on everyone brought before Him, a personal attention given to each person. His laying on of the hand was not necessary. Even the bringing of people to His presence was no necessary as we will see in a later miracle, and as we should already know from common sense. Jesus Christ is God. He created the universe in all its immensity, in all its smallest of detail. Curing these folks is no problem for Him. But they sought Him not for His wisdom, not for salvation, but for their taboo restricted lives.

Taboo restricted? They waited until sundown. Why? No work was allowed on the Sabbath. A rule from God? Yes. Interpreted correctly by mankind? No.

Again the Sabbath is in the soul. Spiritual growth to the point of spiritual maturity, means that you enter into His rest. God does all the work. You do no work. The rules created by man in restricting work on any given Saturday, was pure nonsense. If someone were sick, then you rush them to a physician or one who could treat them, and immediately. These people were so hung up on the Sabbath taboos that they lost all sight on reality and were trapped by the nonsense rules that only mankind can invent.

They had obviously heard of the removal of the demon, which obviously occurred on the Sabbath. They were still imprisoned by their rituals and rules of conduct. If Jesus, the Christ, the deliverer, the Son of God, the creator of the universe, could do things on the Sabbath, then surely each person could go to see Him. Surely these rules were to be questioned.

Likewise, life is far more than just getting some quick fix to ones problems. Once the health is back wouldn't you want even more? You would want things, freedoms, travel, pleasures, money, the list is endless, and the list can have all legitimate things that we all want out of life. If God can give us quick fixes, then He can certainly give us far more. But do these 'things' solve our life's problems? No. The soul goes on and 'things' will fade away when we leave this life. Eternity is where our priorities of preparation should lie. Not that we don't still have responsibilities in this life, for we do, but we need to balance our current life with an adequate portion of preparation for eternity. This preparation will have an impact on our current daily life as well, giving us an even better 'earthly' life. So we win both ways.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
