Luke 5:17b

Lesson # Luke 5:17b
Study Material - Luke 5:17b

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Luke 5:17b

17 And it came about one day that He was teaching; and there were some Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was present for Him to perform healing.

Two things we notice right away. There are many educated men in the audience. Many are priests, but the High Priest of the temple in Jerusalem is not present. Second these learned folks are more or less sitting together. Third they are not sitting right up front in the more desirable seats, but on the sidelines, back out of the way so as not to be too noticeable, but where they can hear and observe. They are not associating themselves with Jesus, but are there sort of as a mere part of the crowd - mingling, blending, unseen, mouses in the corner. Yes I know there is no such word as mouses, but it just seems to fit.

Lets thinks about the situation for a moment. If a famous person of the past (Jesus is the Ancient of Days) were to suddenly come to life and traveled from city to city (Elvis maybe), then wouldn't there be quite a stir? You just know that the T-shirts, caps and other such paraphernalia would spiral right off the charts. Folks would come for miles just to see the famous person.

Now, if you had a love of your life, a hobby, or perhaps something that you do as an occupation, and then someone really famous, and related to your occupation, came to town, then wouldn't you try to go there to see that famous person? Say you are an automobile mechanic, love the races, and a famous race car driver came to town, then it would only seem reasonable that you would be right up front waiting for a glimpse or an autograph or a chance even to speak with your idol.

Here we have God himself, on earth, walking and talking, and performing miracle after miracle right among the peoples of that region. Who would you expect should be the very first folks there not only to greet Him, but to bow down and worship Him? Who would you expect the first people to be there to hear Him speak, to hear Jesus teach, and have that opportunity to shake the hand even, of God Almighty - El Shaddai, the great I Am of Moses day? Who? Of course the priests, and anyone who loves the Word of God.

The High Priest is not there. Who should have known of the Coming of the Savior? Does no one read Isaiah, Daniel, and many of the other prophets? Of courser they read it, but they do not understand it. Unbelievers, even believers who are out of fellowship do not have the ability for understanding spiritual phenomena. Unbelievers lack a human spirit, that third component of the human existence which is issued to each one of us when we believe in Christ. Believers out of fellowship (negative believers that is), have the mechanism (human spirit, fellowship), but it is just inactive - unused, so they do not understand spiritual phenomena.

The fourth item to notice is the statement, 'and the power of the Lord was present for Him to perform healing.' What is this and why is it stated? We know who Jesus is, therefore we know that He is the Lord, and therefore has divine power to do whatever He wills. But we also know that Jesus set aside His divine power and relied on the power of the Holy Spirit throughout His first advent. The divine power of the Holy Spirit was always available to Him, and there was never anytime that it was not available to Him. So why the comment here? Because of the audience of skeptics that were present. They came to see a show. They did not come to see their 'movie star' their 'idol', the one of whom the scriptures (around which they presumably have centered their entire life) spoke. They did not come to see and hear from the All Mighty God. They had no respect whatsoever for the presence of Jesus. They had only their curiosity, their cynicism, their critical attitude, their concern that here was a man who was beginning to draw crowds - crowds that they believed that only they were entitled too. After all who among mankind has been given the office of priest other than they?

Now here is a carpenters son with no education, no resume, none of the usual credentials that would be expected of someone of a 'Priestly ' stature. And he has crowds, and is teaching, and is curing folks of all sorts of illnesses. Must be something hidden behind the show!!!

And Jesus was there with Power to heal. No healing was done yet, but then that was what they (the priests, and other educated folks) were there to see. The show!

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
