Luke 5:36-39

Lesson # Luke 5:36-39
Study Material - Luke 5:36-39

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Luke 5:36-39

36 And He was also telling them a parable: 'No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment; otherwise he will both tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. 37 'And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be spilled out, and the skins will be ruined. 38 'But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. 39 'And no one, after drinking old wine wishes for new; for he says, 'The old is good enough.''

New clothes, new clothes, old bags, new bags, old wine, new wine. What do these have to do with anything?

Lets begin with the last verse. After enjoying the old, a person becomes comfortable with that which is old. The old is comfortable, familiar. It leaves a sense of security even though you know that there is no real security in the old. Still a person remains with the old because that is what he knows.

Changing to something new is difficult. Old habits have to be changed and that might be easy for young people, but for older folks, set in their ways, it is difficult - but not impossible.

The Pharisees are set in their ways with the old. They have drunk the old wine, are comfortable with it and do not wish to change. What is the old? The law, the Mosaic Law. The old is filled with ritual and rules, but over the centuries these rituals, which were intended to teach doctrinal principles, lost their power of instruction. The ritual, the traditions, the made up rules and regulations overrode the correct doctrinal principles that were originally intended, and so the masses could not see the points of doctrine that were intended because the fog of ritual had clouded them over. Even the priests had fallen victim to this heavy fog of legalism. That is the old.

What is the new? That is the Word of God as it was originally intended to be taught. The new wine is the fresh wine which requires a fresh vessel. The fresh vessel is a person who has turned his back on the old (the old sin nature, the old patterns of life), repented (changed their mind, changed their attitude), and is approaching God from a position of new strength.

New strength? Salvation gives one a renewed position in life. At the point of salvation, at that very moment, God creates a third vessel in the individual, a human spirit. In that human spirit is placed eternal life. Anyone who has believed in Christ has a human spirit, possesses eternal life and cannot ever lose it - eternal security. You cannot do anything to lose it. God promotes the believer in effect, and whom God promotes, God will never demote.

Jesus went over all of these points in this chapter and culminates this chapter with this parable of the old garment and old wine.

You cannot take a piece of new clothing and repair an old garment with it. They do not match. The new is ruined. The old is not made new. The old will never become new. You cannot mix the two life styles together. You cannot have things your way and incorporate Gods way into your life and still expect to grow up spiritually.

You cannot pour the new wine into old wine skins. The fermentation process will break the old containers. The old containers are rigid, brittle, don't give and will break. New wine skins are pliable, flexible. They give under the pressure when filled and change shape as they are filled to accommodate the new wine. They are strong and durable.

Doctrine is the new wine. The philosophies of the sin nature are the old wine. Recall that the sin nature has two areas of power - the first is human good, the second is sin which incorporates all manner of wrong doing.. All production of the sin nature is wickedness because it originates out of the source of human effort, human energy, or energy of the flesh as it is often called by some. All activities of the sin nature are performed while the believer is out of fellowship with God. Of course the unbeliever is perpetually out of fellowship. They lack salvation and a human spirit which are mandatory before one can have a relationship with God.

The two lives - the life out of the sin nature and the life originating our of fellowship with God, are mutually exclusive. They cannot coexist together. You are either in fellowship and therefore within Gods will for your life and functioning within the sphere of the spiritual life, or you are out of fellowship and therefore out of Gods will for your life and not functioning within the sphere which God intended for your life. One or the other, never both simultaneously.

Anyone who thinks they can get by with attending church one day per week, or on holidays, or just thinking good thoughts during their life, is a fool. They are fooling their own self. Anyone who is too busy for doctrine is a fool. Doctrine is the source for your preparation not only for this life but for your eternal life. Fellowship is the sphere where Gods power becomes real in and for your life. Anyone who says that they don't really want more blessings in eternity, that they will really be happy just with being in heaven, is a fool. Gods objective for you is to become a spiritually mature believer during this life for two reasons.

First, to help you avoid the pitfalls of the sin nature and to help you avoid living a miserable life on this planet earth. Second, God cannot use you unless you are prepared. God uses prepared believers (mature believers). If you are not mature (and you can never become mature unless you get with a study program), then you are useless to God. Blessing comes to this planet earth through mature believers (salt with taste principle), and by no other means. All governments who think they are making economic policy are totally wrong. In any given moment, God can turn the planet upside down into poverty or He can bring prosperity if it suits Him.

The various folks who were cured demonstrated faith, and therefore they received blessing. The Pharisees came and saw, but they did not understand, Isa. 6:9-10. Many will see and hear doctrine, but they will never change their minds. They will stick with their old clothes, their old drink, and consequently they will miss out on the best that life has to offer. Each one of us has to decide, as Levi decided. Walk away from the old and embrace the new, and this is with reference to that which you think. What you think is really what you are. Not what you eat, not what you wear, not what you drive, not where you live, etc. - none of these is the real you. What you think is what you are. Think Bible doctrine and life will open its doors of opportunity for you. Making the right decisions in life give you more opportunities than making wrong decisions.

So, what is your responsibility in life? What is expected of you? First believe in Christ if you have not already done so. Second remain in fellowship constantly throughout your life. When you get out of fellowship (commit a sin), then confess that sin to God the Father (privately within your own heart. Public confession is never authorized in the Bible. It is no one else's business. It is your business and yours alone.), and thus you will be back in fellowship. If you are not sure of your fellowship status, then confess your arrogance, or something that you may have thought or done just to cover yourself. A god practice for confession is the first thing when you get up in the morning, perhaps throughout the day as required, and in the evening just prior to going to bed. Keep short tabs on yourself. If you judge your self (confession), then you will not be judged (discipline).

Third, while residing in fellowship, then maintain a daily Bible study habit. Study and learn. Memorize various verses. Build up knowledge, concepts, categories of thinking, within various topics of study. This learning process will construct a temple, a fortress, a mansion (or whatever you wish to call it) within your soul. Your soul requires a structure of support, a foundation, and the doctrine you learn becomes that support structure.

Fourth, apply what you learn to your own life at home, at work, everywhere you go. This application is the process of furnishing your constructed building within your soul. This is the gold, silver, and precious stones that is referred to in the Bible. You furnish your home with treasures of intrinsic value.

Fifth, this combination of an on going pattern of daily study, of application of doctrine to your life will in turn re-circulate and result in power, muscle in the soul. This is faith. This build up and from it comes real courage, real security, real ability to face the challenges of life (the lions den). This is the beginnings of spiritual maturity. In the sphere you will be among the elite of heaven. Very few on earth ever reach this plateau, yet it is available to every human being who has ever lived, and it is attainable by you and everyone else who simply commits them self to a daily study program. As you build up knowledge and faith, then spiritual growth accelerates, and then God uses you for some unique purpose that He has intended for you and you alone in life.

Sixth, utilize prayer often in your daily life.

You have the potential of being very special. Most folks lose out in life because they stick with the old clothes, because they try to mix the two life styles together (the sin nature life and the spiritual life), or they are simply not interested in God. If you are blind and I mean literally blind, then you know that your lack of ability to see even the sunset is a loss. But to be blinded spiritually is an even greater loss. A blind person, physically, who is positive toward doctrine will gain their sight for all of eternity, and they will gain even more. A spiritually blind person will lose far more than they could ever see in life.

Check yourself. Check you attitude. Check your relationship with family and friends. But check your spiritual status most of all. That is your first and foremost priority in life. Or it should be.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
