Luke 22:35-38

Lesson # Luke 22:35-38
Study Material - Luke 22:35-38

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Luke 22:35-38

35 And [kai] he said [epo] unto them [autos] , When [hote] I sent [apostello] you [humas] without [ater] purse [balantion] , and [kai] scrip [pera] , and [kai] shoes [hupodema] , [me] lacked ye [hustereo] any thing [tis] ? And [de] they said [epo] , Nothing [oudeis] .
36 Then [oun] said he [epo] unto them [autos] , But [alla] now [nun] , he that hath [echo] a purse [balantion] , let him take [airo] it, and [kai] likewise [homoios] his scrip [pera] : and [kai] he that hath [echo] no [me] sword [machaira] , let him sell [poleo] his [autos] garment [himation] , and [kai] buy [agorazo] one.
37 For [gar] I say [lego] unto you [humin] , that [hoti] this [touto] that is written [grapho] must [dei] yet [eti] be accomplished [teleo] in [en] me [emoi] , And [kai] he was reckoned [logizomai] among [meta] the transgressors [anomos] : for [kai] [gar] the things concerning [peri] me [emou] have [echo] an end [telos] .
38 And [de] they said [epo] , Lord [kurios] , behold [idou] , here [hode] are two [duo] swords [machaira] . And [de] he said [epo] unto them [autos] , It is [esti] enough [hikanos] . KJV-Interlinear

Luke 22:35-38

35 And He said to them, 'When I sent you out without purse and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?' And they said, 'No, nothing.' 36 And He said to them, 'But now, let him who has a purse take it along, likewise also a bag, and let him who has no sword sell his robe and buy one. 37 'For I tell you, that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me, ' And He was numbered with transgressors ';for that which refers to Me has its fulfillment.' 38 And they said, 'Lord, look, here are two swords.' And He said to them, 'It is enough.' NASB

Jesus has reminded the apostles that He must fulfill the purpose for which He came in to this world - the Cross. They do not seem to comprehend that He should suffer for anything.

He reminds them that there is a conflict unseen, in which Satan would relish the opportunity to drag them over the hot coals of life. 'Stop right there now,' they might think. That means suffering for them! Now that changes the rules somewhat.

Now, He reminds them that for over three years they have not had a regular job, they have not had a regular paycheck, and yet they have lived adequately and in comfort. They have received idle threats of stoning but none have ever come to pass.

Jesus has come face to face with the powers that be. There is even a warrant (of sorts) via rumor mill, out suggesting that if anyone knows of the whereabouts of Jesus, then they should notify the elders so that He can be apprehended. Of course we already know that Jesus has been walking back and forth between the Temple in Jerusalem, and Bethany for the past week. He has raised a dead man back to life. He has even debated the Pharisees in the Temple, and so we conclude that these idle threatening words have no power. Everyone knows where Jesus is, and yet nothing is done against Him.

The apostles acknowledge that they have had an easy life and have lacked for nothing these past three years.

Now, Jesus knows what is in their hearts. They acknowledge His words, but then He suggests that if they can do better, then take up their purse, their coat and their arms and prepare themselves for life. They immediately produce two swords. Now, where did those come from?

Have they been fighting off the Roman army? Have they been fighting off road robbers? Perhaps little old ladies who are blind and want to get close to Jesus? Can't trust those little old ladies you know! So what is with the swords? Nothing.

This is more evidence of their lack of faith in Christ. They never used those weapons, never needed them. Two swords for twelve men? Whose turn is it to use the sword today?

They need only the sword of truth, Eph. 6:17, which is Bible doctrine. They, having this in their soul, will build up their spiritual muscle, of which we have already seen is faith. If faith is strong enough, then nothing in life can bother nor stop them in what God has planned for their lives. He will be numbered with the sinners of the world, and that is that, Isa. 53:12.

Here we know that Gods plan has been proceeding for over 4000 years since Adam. The plans for the crucifixion have been documented for over 1500 years since Moses. Satan fancies himself pretty highly yet he has no power against Gods plan. Nothing can stop it. Nothing can alter it.

This same principle of life applies to each one of us. God has a plan for each one of us. Yes, that means you and whom ever is listening to your reading of this study. Now I presume that if you are reading this, then you have some years under your belt. That means that you have eaten at least one meal in your life, have had one set of clothes in your life, have lived under at least one roof in your life, traveled in some form of transportation in your life. Dare I go on?

This means that if you are alive and breathing, then someone has taken care of you. You can arrogantly presume that you have accomplished it all yourself, or you can give God some credit.

You have a plan set out for your life. God established that plan for you, in eternity past. He made provision for every circumstance, and so now you have an opportunity to live that plan, or you can live your alternate plan. Alternate? What is that?

If you are positive toward God and doctrine, and live inside your fellowship sphere, and learn His word and grow up spiritually and apply His rules to your life, then ..... You will (emphasis on will) live the life God intended for you. If God (remember that we are talking about God), then if God designed something for you, then it has to be good.

If however, you think that this is all a bunch of bunk, then you probably think that there is a better plan out there for you, and you are right, sort of. There is an alternate plan. So you, can put this study down, and go find out for yourself. Now you cannot read further on this page, because you have something better, so why waste your time reading this. Hummm!

The alternate plan (now you are peeking), anyway, your alternate plan is to become historical filler. You can live within the jungle of this world and there are even rules in the jungle. See the jungle rules chart in the chart book. But there you will have some happiness (but you will eventually lose it), some prosperity (but you will eventually lose it), and a lots of grief, and that won't go away until you die. If you never believed in Christ then it just gets worse from that point on. If you have believed in Christ, then you at least get free of this world but then you face your own personal evaluation before Christ. 'What did you do during life, my child?' 'Well Lord, I just took up space!' 'Look, I have two swords!' .... 'Next!'

Hummm. Do you think that Christ will be shaking His head or rolling His eyes a lot come eval. time?

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
