Luke 23:38

Lesson # Luke 23:38
Study Material - Luke 23:38

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Luke 23:38

38 And [de] a superscription [epigraphe] also [kai] was [en] written [grapho] over [epi] him [autos] in letters [gramma] of Greek [Hellenikos] , and [kai] Latin [Rhomaikos] , and [kai] Hebrew [Hebraikos] , THIS [houtos] IS [esti] THE KING [basileus] OF THE JEWS [Ioudaios] . KJV-Interlinear

38 Now there was also an inscription above Him, 'THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.' NASB

Matt. 27:37-38
37 And they put up above His head the charge against Him which read, 'THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.' 38 At that time two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left. NASB

Mark 15:26-28
26 And the inscription of the charge against Him read, 'THE KING OF THE JEWS.' 27 And they crucified two robbers with Him, one on His right and one on His left. 28 [And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, 'And He was numbered with transgressors.'] NASB

John 19:19-22
19 And Pilate wrote an inscription also, and put it on the cross. And it was written, 'JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.' 20 Therefore this inscription many of the Jews read, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and in Greek. 21 And so the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, 'Do not write, 'The King of the Jews'; but that He said,' I am King of the Jews. '' 22 Pilate answered, 'What I have written I have written.' NASB

The clock is counting down to judgment hour. T-minus about three hours now. Pilate is thoroughly ticked off regarding this whole affair. The Pharisees and Sadducees had their political pressure techniques in forcing Pilate to do their dirty work.

In a round about way, Pilate gets even by having a sign posted along with Jesus. The chief priests, elders and scribes know about it because they are 'outside' of the city watching the execution of Jesus instead of back in the Temple (inside of the city) preparing for the afternoon sacrifices.

The city of Jerusalem represents the city of peace (Gods peace). The Temple represents residence in fellowship with God. All are outside of that environment as far as their spiritual lives are concerned.

And of all things to protest. The words written regarding Jesus and His Kingship over the Jews. The original charge that the chief priests brought against Jesus when they came before Pilate. Inconsistency and hypocrisy are the nature of those who would be negative toward God and His word.

They protest, but to no avail. They got what they were after and now Pilate is going to throw it right back on them. When being interrogated, Jesus confirmed that He indeed was a King. Pilate is no fool, even though corrupt thoroughly in his life, he was well aware of Jesus, and the reputation surrounding Him. How could anyone have missed all of the hoopla during the previous three years, all of the miracles, and especially the rasing of the dead which occurred only a couple of weeks earlier.

The chief priests were just fit to be tied, when that miracle occurred. You know that Pilate and others knew of it. Pilate knew of Jesus' origin, for it is spelled out on the sign - 'the Nazarene.' Through all of the interrogations and questioning, His residence and origin were not brought up. In fact, when the last charge against Jesus was put forth - 'He claims to be the Son of God' then Pilate was extremely nervous and questioned Him regarding where He came from and who He really was.' Jesus remained silent.

The sign was placed with Jesus so all (people from across the world) could see Him and who He was and why He was crucified. Even to those who hated Him, His death was a disappointment. It was not enough.

Pilate ignored their request. Jesus had stated to Him that He was their King and that is the way it was going to be. Pilate denied their demand and walked away. It is what it is, and nothing in existence will ever change it. So in their little victory (or so they thought) they (the chief priests etc.) were disappointed. The chief priests were slaves to public opinion more so than they realized.

Jesus was hung on the Cross at 9 a.m. The protests went to Pilate regarding the sign also hung over Jesus head. It is now under T-minus three hours until judgment. Noon is the appointed time. Appointed in eternity past in te divine decrees and documented by Moses over 1500 years earlier. Gods clock is on track and on time.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
