Lesson # Luke 23:44-45
Study Material - Luke 23:44-45
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Luke 23:44-45 44 And [de] it was [en] about [hosei] the sixth [hektos] hour [hora] , and [kai] there was [ginomai] a darkness [skotos] over [epi] all [holos] the earth [ge] until [heos] the ninth [ennatos] hour [hora] . 45 And [kai] the sun [helios] was darkened [skotizo] , and [kai] the veil [katapetasma] of the temple [naos] was rent [schizo] in the midst [mesos] . KJV-Interlinear
Luke 23:44-45 44 And it was now about the sixth hour, and darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour, 45 the sun being obscured; and the veil of the temple was torn in two. NASB
45 Now from the sixth hour darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, ' Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? 'that is,' My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me? ' 47 And some of those who were standing there, when they heard it, began saying, 'This man is calling for Elijah.' NASB
33 And when the sixth hour had come, darkness fell over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, 'Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?' which is translated, 'My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?' 35 And when some of the bystanders heard it, they began saying, 'Behold, He is calling for Elijah.' NASB
At noon the entire earth was shrouded in darkness. The word 'ge' is a reference to the entire world, not just the local geographical area. Darkness accompanies judgment in many instances in the Bible, and here there are several reasons for the darkness, absence of light.
First to get everyone's attention. It is the world which has failed in sin, and now God is fulfilling a promise made long ago to Adam and repeated on many occasions to the various Old Testament patriarch's and prophets.
Second the Son of God has accepted this humiliation both from mankind and now He is to receive the sins of mankind on Himself, so God provides a veil of darkness as a covering for Him.
Third all the universe is awaiting the victory of God in order to receive back its glory it once held prior to the fall of Satan, the one who has caused all the trouble across the wide universe.
19 For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. NASB
And so Jesus Christ took on all of the transgressions of mankind in order to provide a way for our freedom from the enslavement cause by sin and death (separation from God).
5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. NASB
One day, those who lifted Jesus Christ up onto the Cross will remember their (ancestors) action and they will repent their ways and will look to Him as their savior and Lord. This will not occur until the last generation of Jewish peoples who will become believers (in mass), in Christ during the last half of the Tribulation. And then will He return in all His glory at the Second Advent. And He will return for their rescue and the establishment of Gods Kingdom, a Kingdom which will not be established until they accept Jesus as the Christ.
10 'And I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him, like the bitter weeping over a first-born. 11 'In that day there will be great mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the plain of Megiddo. NASB
And so it is now dark throughout the planet. Everyone's attention is focused on the darkness, the total absence of light. It is silent. No storm. No groans of pain. No noise whatsoever. Christ has been isolated from God and now from the world in darkness as the sins of humanity are being transferred onto Him and now He is separated from the world. For three hours the darkness will continue.
13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us for it is written, 'Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree' NASB
30 And it shall growl over it in that day like the roaring of the sea. If one looks to the land, behold, there is darkness and distress; Even the light is darkened by its clouds. NASB
10 For the stars of heaven and their constellations Will not flash forth their light; The sun will be dark when it rises, And the moon will not shed its light. NASB
The Father forsook the Son because the Son took upon Himself 'our transgressions, our iniquities,' Isa. 53:5. Jesus 'was delivered up because of our transgression,' Rom 4:25, and 'died for our sins according to the Scriptures,' 1 Cor 15:3. He 'who knew no sin (became) sin on our behalf,' 2 Cor 5:21, and became 'a curse for us,' Gal 3:13. 'He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross,' 1 Peter 2:24, 'died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust,' 1 Peter 3:18, and became 'the propitiation for our sins,' 1 John 4:10.
The transfer of sin is complete and now judgment begins. Jesus who has undergone tremendous pain in these last several hours had uttered no sound up until now, then suddenly, out of the darkness He literally screams:
My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me? NASB
At that moment he who was made sin for us and was now bearing the punishment for all of mankind's sins. The Father and the Spirit turned their back on Him and the person, the deity of Jesus Christ bore the full force and power of Gods judgment, while the humanity of Jesus Christ bore the sins of the world. Deity cannot know sin nor have anything to do with it, however the deity of Christ can take on the punishment which He did. The humanity of Christ took on and bore all of the sins of the human race.
13 Thine eyes are too pure to approve evil, And Thou canst not look on wickedness with favor. NASB
Those who were nearby mocked at Him yet again, suggesting that since God did not come to save Him, then He was calling Elijah. Even in the face of the most crucial and important moments in all of history, those who are negative will never see the truth, and will never come to terms with their negative attitude. They will mock and ridicule all of the way to their own destruction. Believing all of the time that they are safe within the boundaries of their own human wisdom. Yet He took on the punishment for their sins as well.
And then it was over. The darkness begins to lift.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
