Mark 2:21-22

Lesson # Mark 2:21-22
Study Material - Mark 2:21-22

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Mark 2:21-22

21 'No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; otherwise the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear results. 22 'And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost, and the skins as well; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.'

Too often, if you read the various commentaries in print, you will see the explanation of these verses as representing the differences of Christianity and Judaism. These are in part true, but they look to the 'new' covenant as the explanation of and the replacement of the 'old' covenant, as thought these two concepts of covenant thinking were given and then subsequently modified, and that is totally wrong and a misapplication of Bible doctrine.

The Bible is consistent with respect to its teaching of the spiritual life throughout history. What changed was mans interpretation and application of those principles taught.

The Pharisees messed up the ritual teachings of Leviticus and eliminated the true principles of doctrine, replacing them with their own man made regulations of self righteousness or asceticism. They formulated their own rules of righteousness and emphasized the external actions as having more meaning then the internal content of the soul. The exterior was inconsistent with the interior.

Today, these same errors occur. Most people are not of the Judaism faith, yet we have many other religions with their rules and ritual, we have many non-religious philosophies in the sciences, in theories and such. Such that many of the same errors in defining spirituality occur today just as they did 2000 years ago. People still look to the actions of their life rather than the thought content of their minds.

Jesus was teaching within the dispensation of the Age of Israel. HE was not eluding to a new age (the Church Age) in such a manner that perhaps peoples should wait for that age in order to become spiritual. What of those that died in the intervening couple of years from the date of this conversation and the Pentecost that followed the Cross? Are they simply lost and without hope? No. This was not instruction of the better Age to come. The dispensation one happens to live in is not the principle determinant of ones spiritual life.

The overriding principle of life is simply - in order to alter mans habits you must first change his principles. Change begins from within, not from without.

People have two basic opinions to choose from in life. That which emanates from the sin nature and that which comes from the Bible. Both do not fit together as the articles of clothing (old and new) and the wine skins (old and new) are not meant for one another.

Here is a little different take on the message given by Jesus, verses the one mentioned in Luke. Why are they slightly different? We already know that there was far more spoken and done by Christ than was recorded in the scriptures. Both Luke and Matthew and Mark and so forth heard the same teachings, they just preferred to write the things they thought pertinent to their respective books, and, since God is the origin of all written doctrine, then we receive exactly what God wants us to receive.

Now for the unshrunk cloth and old garments parable. We studied some concepts in Luke 5. The two opinions (sin nature and Biblical) cannot be combined and both lived simultaneously. A person has to choose either one or the other. Here the description is changed slightly. The person who tries to combine the two life styles will end up in frustration (the bigger tear in the clothing).

Ever had a round hole and tried to get a bigger square peg into it? It just does not work and never will work. What results from repeated attempts is frustration, impatience, anger and so forth. We live in the jungle here on planet earth. may folks try one plan in life and it doesn't work. They try another plan and it doesn't work, and yet another plan and it doesn't work either. Then they go to church and look to God to fix things - immediately. It doesn't work either. Therefore, we conclude that the world hates us and no one likes us. We are just screwed in life and that is all there is to life. It just isn't going to get any better. So we lose our hope, and do not believe anything or anyone, even when the truth comes along - sometimes.

Sometimes it takes Gods assault of discipline, or Gods allowing us to suffer in the environment of the jungle to the extent that we have no options. The we are perhaps ready to hear Gods Word.

The old life cannot be saved or even made new. The old life is the sin nature, or life without God. It has to be discarded altogether and replaced with a new life. New garments (Bible doctrine in the soul, a new application of life style based on Gods principles of life and not on liberal thinking that is prevalent in the world today or at the time of Christ or any other time in history).

New wine - Bible doctrine is the fresh new wine. It needs a fresh new receptacle - the positive attitude of the believer. The old wine is that philosophy (views originating from the sin nature) which replaced the truth of Bible doctrine. Old wine - the ceremonies, rituals, taboos, tokens of life which grow to have their own importance though they have no importance nor are they the origin of anything important. They bear no resemblance to reality, but are mere activities that make one feel (emotion) like one has accomplished something that makes him spiritual. And that is a false concept.

Only Bible doctrine taken in on a consistent daily basis will change the soul of the believer, eliminate those old garments and change out those old wine bags. The result? The believer begins to change in their attitude, in their function in life. Patience is enhanced. Nothing is done in the spiritual life on an instant basis. Your commitment to your spiritual life is a life long commitment, not just a quick trip to the church, a quick prayer, and then miracles happen right and left. Only in the movies.

Brain washing? No. Doctrine is never forced on anyone. Bible doctrine helps you see the truth and discern between the various false philosophies out there in the world. You always have the freedom to choose.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
