Matthew 5:14-16

Lesson # Matt. 5:14-16
Study Material - Matt. 5:14-16

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Matt. 5:14-16

14 'You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 'Nor do men light a lamp, and put it under the peck-measure, but on the lampstand; and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 'Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Jesus Christ is the light of the world, John 8:12. All Christians should appear as light from the source of Christ, Phil. 2:15. As such, believers should function in their lives as light, Eph. 5:8.

There are two good things in the world - salt and light. Without either of them no living thing can exist. Salt is the substance with which we base our lives - the Bible doctrine we learn. Light is the production of our lives (application of doctrine). How we should live our lives on a daily basis.

We do not hide in a closet and study our Bible in secrecy, then go out into the world and live as others do. We can't go into the palace of God (fellowship) just to eat, then run back out into the jungle and live with the rest of the rejects of the world. You may certainly have protection while in the palace, but in the jungle there is no protection except from your own cunning, strength, and agility. And we should all know that those things cannot possibly function forever, nor can we anticipate all the things that are happening or will happen out there in the jungle. Your reflexes grow slower with age. The actions of others or even mother nature can suddenly swallow you up in a disaster. Why would anyone want to live as others do anyway? Well to impress others of course. And from the weakness of faith in the soul, the desire to please mankind, to bow to peer pressure is greater than the desire to please God.

As a believer in Christ, you become a light as a city all lit up on a hill. You are conspicuous in this life. Whether or not you know it or even like it, many eyes are on you. Angels watch, as well as people in your periphery (family, neighbors, friends, fellow workers, customers, business associates, etc.). The list is long. Everybody you run into in life will have an opinion of you. To some you might be exciting. To some you might be boring. Some will admire you, commend you, rejoice in you, wish to imitate you. And at the same time there will be those who will envy you, hate you, censure you, study you in order to deceive and make you fail, ostracize you.

Just as the sun in the sky, that big ball of fire, cannot be controlled. It rises each day, and sets each day. It burns steadily in its nuclear activity and will do so for a long time. We cannot slow it down, we cannot speed it up. We have absolutely no control or power over the sun. So it is with Gods light. The world cannot control it, can't make it go away, can't change it. Gods word has always been here and will be here forever.

There is no power greater in the world than that which is inside of the mature believer - Bible doctrine. Therefore there is no basis for embarrassment for associating with a Bible study program. Though there are certainly those who will ridicule you for not going out and having 'fun'. The fact remains that your 'fun' will be far greater if you pursue Bible study, than if you pursue the excitement of this world.

The world lives in darkness, in an environment where we cannot see anything. The Word of God is an environment of light, where everything is open and visible, and clear.

So your life is under the magnifying glass. You cannot see everyone who is observing you, but you will either set the example for others by your living a responsible life guided by Bible doctrine, or you will demonstrate your stupidity and cowardice and ultimate failure by trying to play both sides of the fence, which cannot be done.

Happiness, contentment, fulfillment and all of the other benefits and blessings in life come from advancement to spiritual maturity. One requirement of advancement to maturity is that you practice in life what you have learned from your Bible study. You deal with people with kindness, humor, fairness, understanding and so forth. You do not become a self righteous stick in the mud that refuses to bend, but an open minded and thoughtful person to whom other positive people would naturally gravitate to.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
