Matthew 5:27-30

Lesson # Matt. 5:27-30
Study Material - Matt. 5:27-30

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Matt. 5:27-30

27 'You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery'; 28 but I say to you, that everyone who looks on a woman to lust for her has committed adultery with her already in his heart. 29 'And if your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out, and throw it from you; for it is better for you that one of the parts of your body perish, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 'And if your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off, and throw it from you; for it is better for you that one of the parts of your body perish, than for your whole body to go into hell.

Self discipline and self righteousness are two characteristics, in which the lack of the former and the presence of the latter can distort your life and make your life miserable as well as make the lives of others around you miserable. Superficiality and the tendency to see the sins of others but not see your own sins contribute to ones own misery as well.

Here we see the personal sins of lust. Adultery generally being thought of as an overt act of sex by married persons, that is sex with someone other than ones spouse. This is not limited to only the man committing adultery, but the woman can do this just as well. Actually if you really think about it, adultery takes at least two persons in order to commit the overt act. But sins of lust are not limited to just the act, but begin with the thought process that leads to the act. Once you look at someone else (other than your spouse) with thoughts of sex, then you have already committed the sin inside your mind. To proceed with the act requires a consenting other party and then the act itself. So there are at least three levels of sin involved.

The first level is the thought, the second is the conspiring or luring of another party into the sin. And the third level of the sin is the act itself with that other party. Obviously while you are involved in the act there is a lot of sexual thought traffic going on in your mind. So the sin becomes very complex and compounds into many sins throughout the ordeal as well as after. Possibly guilt follows, or even worse, if no remorse or guilt is associated with the sin. If this is the case, then your spiritual morals are indeed in need of an overhaul.

Homosexuality is the abnormal act of sex between members of the same sex. This too is compounded in that same sex marriage is specifically not permitted in the Bible, so that in itself is a sin, so if a person happens to be married legitimately and then engages in a homosexual act, then adultery is in view as well as the homosexuality aspects. If a person is not married, then fornication is the technical word describing this forbidden sex. So no matter how you look it, sin begins with the thought process.

The thought process engages your mind. The motivation comes from your desires. And in your mind, you have already gone through the act or acts long before you have engaged in the act itself. This is why the confession and the whole fellowship process is so important. With it, you at least have a constraint inside of you. Something that will serve to keep your thoughts in check. It also places you back inside of fellowship with God, and places the principles of Bible doctrine in front of your eyes, which provides even more helpful self restraints for your life.

Ignoring confession, then you have no spiritual restraints, but then you have the moral restraints that society has placed on the activities. Regardless of whether Bible doctrine is available or not, society has moral standards. Though they often change like the weather, they still serve as a constraint on society activities. Sometimes they are good morals, sometimes not, but the restraint concept is still there.

When the moral fabric of society breaks down, then you have the quintessence of anti-authority attitudes, of crime, of tyranny, of chaos, and so forth. At this point there is no safe haven for anyone (except of course for mature believers in fellowship. Fellowship is always a safe harbor - a spiritual sanctuary.).

By the same token, if your hand or your eye gets you into trouble, then get rid of them. What in the world does that mean? Is this the actual cutting off of the hand or cutting out of the eye? Well of course not, but if you are constantly in trouble because of your own desires, or by your own actions, then you would be far better off if you were without the very things that cause your trouble.

What causes your trouble? Your weaknesses of soul. How do your cut these weaknesses out? Bible study, and, I might add, by avoiding the situations that lead you to think or do the bad things that you do. If you can't hold your liquor, then stop drinking. Don't want to get lung cancer? Stop smoking. Have some other weakness? Stop going to places, and start avoiding situations that seem to entice your weakness. If you remove yourself socially from a situation, or geographically from a situation. Then you can begin the process of building up your inner resources (Bible study), that will help you to refrain from engaging in whatever those weaknesses are that you have.

The alternative is pure hell in your life. Not the lake of fire hell. That is where unbelievers will go at the end of human history. And by the way, the lake of fire has not even been created yet. No one is in it yet, and won't be until the last and final judgment at the end of the Millennium. That is still future for us.

Here what Jesus is referring to is really two things. The hell of being miserable in ones life. Gossips, drunks, drug addicts, habitual criminals, sexually active folks, all these and more, cause themselves grief. You are in danger from the law, or in danger from society rejection, or in danger from disease, and worst of all, you are endanger of having an extremely unhealthy soul. The more time you log outside of Gods will, then the less opportunities you will have in this life and in eternity. If you do not believe in Christ, then your eternity is really bad (the lake of fire).

Better to sacrifice some portion of your present life (example - stop going to the weekend parties), and perhaps lose some of that temporary fun, and then you'll have more opportunity for Bible study, for enriching your soul, and you'll build up your inner resources and capacities for life, and in the long run you'll have even greater happiness than you could ever imagine. You will not only be stabilizing your life now, but you will be building up your eternal life which is a very good investment.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
