Matthew 12:46-47

Lesson # Matt. 12:46-47
Study Material - Matt. 12:46-47

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Matt. 12:46-47

46 While [eti] he [autos] yet [de] talked [laleo] to the people [ochlos] , behold [idou] , his mother [meter] and [kai] his [autos] brethren [adelphos] stood [histemi] without [exo] , desiring [zeteo] to speak [laleo] with him [autos] .
47 Then [de] one [tis] said [epo] unto him [autos] , Behold [idou] , thy [sou] mother [meter] and [kai] thy [sou] brethren [adelphos] stand [histemi] without [exo] , desiring [zeteo] to speak [laleo] with thee [soi] . KJV-Interlinear

Matt. 12:46-47

46 While He was still speaking to the multitudes, behold, His mother and brothers were standing outside, seeking to speak to Him. 47 And someone said to Him, 'Behold, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside seeking to speak to You.' NAS

Jesus immediate human family consisted of Joseph and Mary, his half brothers (James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas), and His half sisters, who are not named (Matt 13:55-56).

By this time Joseph has faded form the scene. He has probably died by this time. Nothing is ever mentioned of him since Jesus childhood years.

Jesus had a family of course, but He actually had several families. First as God, His family consisted of the Father and the Spirit or the other two members of the trinity. On earth he had his human family through which, Mary, He was brought into the world. Then there is His dynasty family - the House of David. Then after the Rapture there will be the wedding and the Royal Family which consists of Church Age believers. The Bride (Church Age believers) are currently being assembled during our dispensation. Our dispensation began at the Pentecost Feast which was fifty days after the Cross, and will end when the Rapture occurs. If the Cross occurred in 30 AD, then we are 1972 years into our dispensational age (2002-30)

All relations to Christ as God are through faith, not blood and genetics. Mary had a child for sure, from a pregnancy of which Joseph had no part, the virgin pregnancy. God the Holy Spirit provided a fertilized egg (remember that God can simply 'will' things to happen - Jesus 'willed' all these miracles), and Mary carried the fetus (biological life) for nine months. She carried a biological 'thing'. She did not carry God in her womb. All mothers carry a biological 'thing', an empty container. At birth then God breathes in life to that container. That life which the Bible calls 'neshamah' or the 'spark of life' or the 'breath of life.' We have studied this in detail before in Genesis.

The container receives a soul and human life in that soul. Now the person has two parts or two containers - a body and a soul both with life in them - biological life and human life. The biological comes from the dust of the earth. The latter comes from God. When a person believes in Christ then there is a rebirth. A human spirit is regenerated in the person and eternal life is imputed into that human spirit. This gives the believer three parts - body, soul, and spirit, with their three respective life parts - biological, human life and eternal life. The former, the body (destructible), will eventually be discarded and replaced with a resurrection body (indestructible).

So now we know that these people have not been listening. Relationship with Jesus is not through blood, but through faith. Even His family had to believe in Him as God, the Savior, and so forth, or they would have gone to the Lake of Fire as will all unbelievers. We are even told that Jesus' brothers had a difficult time believing Him, but they eventually did (after the Cross).

In the context of our passage, not morality (mans righteousness), not blood relations (family of Joseph), not privileged positions (Levitical Priesthood), not privileged relations (nation of Israel) are sufficient to save ones soul. They lack the important ingredient of faith.

Faith is available to all not just to some. In salvation there is equal opportunity and equal privilege for all. For those who can not believe or will never hear of God (the mentally impaired, infants dying at birth, young children who do not grow up to reach an age of understanding, and so forth), then their salvation is automatic. God is fair. We studied this through David in the loss of his first child with Bathsheba 2 Sam. 12+.

The Pharisees had tried to set up their own unique sect or club in which only those who were deemed worthy by them, were included. That worthiness was almost always based on looks, wealth, position, relations, and so forth. If they did not like your looks (prejudice), if you were born of a some wrong line (none of us have a choice in the line in which God places us into this world), if you did not measure up to the standards which the Pharisees and other groups had established, then you were invariably locked out. At least in their minds. Thank goodness that these people did not run the universe.

The empty vessel of Jesus had a mother and brothers in that they all came from the dust of the earth. But the life of Jesus was of God, to man. And the resurrection body after the Cross was of God, not dust. All relations to God must come from faith and no other source. Not works, not relations, nothing.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
