Lesson # Leaven - Matt. 13:33 Study Material - Leaven - Matt. 13:33 You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth. Leaven Matt. 13:33 33 Another [allos] parable [parabole] spake he [laleo] unto them [autos] ; The kingdom [basileia] of heaven [ouranos] is [esti] like [homoios] unto leaven [zume] , which [hos] a woman [gune] took [lambano] , and hid [ekgrupto] in [eis] three [treis] measures [saton] of meal [aleuron] , till [heos] the whole [holos] was [hos] leavened [zumoo] . KJV-Interlinear 33 He spoke another parable to them, 'The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three pecks of meal, until it was all leavened.' NASB Luke 13:20-21 20 And again He said, 'To what shall I compare the kingdom of God? 21 'It is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three pecks of meal, until it was all leavened.' NASB Leaven is a small thing that when buried in a larger thing, will grow to influence the whole batch. A mother would give a daughter a small amount of leavened dough, that the daughter would keep and thus perpetuate her bread fixings. A small amount of leavened dough would be placed in a new batch of dough so that it might rise. Before that dough was placed in an oven, a small amount of leavened dough would be removed from the larger batch and placed in yet another batch of new dough and thus the cycle was perpetuated throughout the daughters life. Leavened bread tastes better than unleavened and the illustration here is that the spiritual life is far better than a life without any kind of spiritual flavor in it. Leaven is something small that influences the whole. Leavening can also represent sin in the life. A small amount of sin can rise to influence and ruin the whole batch, but here in this parable sin is not the issue. Jesus has already made it very clear that people and their own attitude are the biggest barriers to their own advancement in their spiritual life. Jesus made it clear that Satan has infiltrated this world with such deceitfulness (the tares) that it is virtually impossible for man, who lacks wisdom or some standard with which to compare, to distinguish that which is good from that which is bad. Man can go far enough to make anything seem good or reasonable if it suits his purpose, philosophy, politics of the day. They did burn witches. They did and do hold prejudices against various peoples for many superficial reasons. But in this case the positive aspects of leaven are in view. At the Passover, leaven was not allowed. It was in fact denied for the seven days of the Feast of Unleavened Bread as well as the one day of the Passover Feast which immediately preceded it, and then and only then (after the feasts) was it allowed again. At the Feast of Pentecost (fifty days following Passover) leavened bread was allowed. By the way for those who do not know, Jesus was crucified on the Cross on the afternoon immediately prior to the beginning of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. He had to be taken down before the Feast days began at dusk which was the time when Passover (the one day feast) ended. Passover began on a Tuesday evening. Christ was judged on the Cross on Wednesday afternoon. You might visit again the Cross Timeline on the Index page of the Bible study web page. He celebrated the last supper on Tuesday evening with the apostles, went to the garden, was arrested and tried in six different trials during that night and into the early morning hours of Wednesday. He was hung on the Cross at 9 a.m., and said his last words until noon at which time darkness covered the land, and He was judged for three hours in the early afternoon on Wednesday until 3 p.m. Then several miracles took place including a violent earthquake. Christ was taken down from the Cross and placed in the tomb prior to 6 p.m. The traditional end of the day in His time. He was in the grave for three days and three nights from Wednesday evening until Saturday evening, then prior to the crack of dawn on Sunday morning (after three days and nights in the tomb), He arose, and the tomb was empty when Mary and others came to tend to Him. Leaven represents many things depending on the context of its use. And in this case that little thing (the spiritual life) works from the inside out, is not visible while it works and grows within. Not until it has grown substantially throughout the batch is there evidence of its presence. That is the spiritual life and the production that eventually overflows from the mind of growing believers out and into their daily lives. Three pecks of flour dough is about a bushel. Only a hand full of leavened dough is required to leaven the entire batch. It doesn't take much doctrine to turn around ones entire life. Imagine what ones life would be like if greater spiritual growth is brought into your life. As the mustard plant has huge odds against its survival, so too the dough may fail. But God is greater than all things of this physical world, he who has God in him is sure to succeed. Regardless of your life's experiences, whether successes or wrought with one failure after another, if you hold to your daily Bible study, then all of your life will turn around and change completely. Things don't change over night, but change for the better they will. Faith is the result of continual study and application of doctrine to the life, and faith is the muscle and the power, of confidence in the spiritual life.
