Matthew 16:9-12

Lesson # Matt. 16:9-12
Study Material - Matt. 16:9-12

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Matt. 16:9-12

9 Do ye [noeo] not yet [oupo] understand [noeo] , neither [oude] remember [mnemoneuo] the five [pente] loaves [artos] of the five thousand [pentakischilioi] , and [kai] how many [posos] baskets [kophinos] ye took up [lambano] ?
10 Neither [oude] the seven [hepta] loaves [artos] of the four thousand [tetrakischilioi] , and [kai] how many [posos] baskets [spuris] ye took up [lambano] ?
11 How [pos] is it that [hoti] ye do [noeo] not [ou] understand [noeo] that I spake [epo] it not [ou] to you [humin] concerning [peri] bread [artos] , that ye should beware [prosecho] of [apo] the leaven [zume] of the Pharisees [Pharisaios] and [kai] of the Sadducees [Saddoukaios] ?
12 Then [tote] understood they [suniemi] how that [hoti] he bade [epo] them not [ou] beware [prosecho] of [apo] the leaven [zume] of bread [artos] , but [alla] of [apo] the doctrine [didache] of the Pharisees [Pharisaios] and [kai] of the Sadducees [Saddoukaios] . KJV-Interlinear

Matt. 16:9-12

9 'Do you not yet understand or remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up? 10 'Or the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many large baskets you took up? 11 'How is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.' 12 Then they understood that He did not say to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. NAS

Pharisee's teachings were of religious hypocrisy. An application of human viewpoint as a substitute for spiritual viewpoint. Human energy in the place of Divine energy. The Sadducees teachings were a form of religious liberalism. An application of earthly means (government) to achieve a utopian state (human solutions to all problems).

The physical needs of man in this physical world are limited to this physical life, and affect this life only. They contribute nothing to the next life the very long eternal life. The spiritual needs of man will have an impact not only on this physical life, but also on our eternal life. The spiritual needs are far more important than any physical need. God has given us all opportunities to secure our spiritual needs. God even goes so far as to provide for our physical needs in this life ... When ... We focus our attentions on our spiritual studies, Matt. 6:31-33. Don't worry about your day to day human needs. God will supply you with all of these. You still must be responsible and not irresponsible with the way you live your life. So, now that God will supply each one of us with our human needs, then He will also give us time, information, and opportunity to acquire and fulfill our spiritual needs.

We are constantly bombarded with the opinions of this world, therefore the Christian needs constant exposure to the Word of God. The Christian needs constant illumination of the Word of God, by the Spirit of God (the Holy Spirit). Only God's Word and Spirit can raise the believer above the cares, concerns, perplexities, emotional traps, and confusion that are the inevitable heritage of life that is viewed and lived purely in the human realm.

The disciples thought only of their lack of bread. They have been living and traveling with Jesus for many months now. Had they missed any meals? No. Did they not observe Christ create food for large crowds? Yes. Did they forget so soon? They were of little 'faith' as Jesus describes them.

So how does one get faith? Faith is the spiritual muscle that gives your spiritual life power and strength. Faith is developed by following the circle of wisdom - as we have called the spiritual learning and growing process. Isaiah calls this process the seven spirits. See Isa. 11. See also our study in Rev. 1. See also the Seven Spirits chart on the Bible Study Index page.

Everything in your spiritual life begins with your positive attitude toward God. This drives your desire to want to learn. You pay attention, you learn, you understand, your have life's experiences and therefore you apply your Bible knowledge to your life, and you grow. Then you do it all over again and again throughout your life. You learn, you experience things in life (everything you experience in life), you apply doctrine to your life, you learn from your experiences and from your application of doctrine to your life. And you grow up. As you grow up, you mature. As you mature, then your faith develops. You have greater confidence in God, more so than in the circumstances of your life.

The disciples should have thought nothing of the status of their bread. Bread (the fulfillment of the physical needs) will always be there. God will provide them. What Jesus wanted them to focus on was their spiritual side of life. That part of ones life is far more important.

A part of our spiritual learning includes the reading of the signs of life - 'Red sky in morning - sailor take warning.' So we learn weather patterns. The child has a fever, so we clue in on that and give the child something for the fever. We discover cancer, so knowing what we do of cancer (not a good thing, nor never will be) we apply appropriate medical procedures to it. We do not pray for it to go away - It won't. God gave us medical procedures for that. We discover problems in our life or in the world - we take appropriate actions to solve them. When we are without any options - then God steps in and gives us options.

So do not worry about life. Concentrate instead on your spiritual life. That is an investment for forever.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
