Matthew 18:6-7

Lesson # Matt. 18:6-7
Study Material - Matt. 18:6-7

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Matt. 18:6-7

6 But [de] whoso [hos] [an] shall offend [skandalizo] one [heis] of these [touton] little ones [mikros] which [ho] believe [pisteuo] in [eis] me [eme] , it were better [sumphero] for him [autos] that [hina] a millstone [mulos] [onikos] were hanged [kremannumi] about [epi] his [autos] neck [trachelos] , and [kai] that he were drowned [katapontizo] in [en] the depth [pelagos] of the sea [thalassa] .
7 Woe [ouai] unto the world [kosmos] because of [apo] offences [skandalon] ! for [gar] it must needs [anagke] be [esti] that offences [skandalon] come [erchomai] ; but [plen] woe [ouai] to that man [anthropos] by [ekeinos] whom [dia] [hos] the offence [skandalon] cometh [erchomai] ! KJV-Interlinear

Matt. 18:6-7

6 but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it is better for him that a heavy millstone be hung around his neck, and that he be drowned in the depth of the sea. 7 'Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to that man through whom the stumbling block comes! NAS

Often we walk a very narrow path. We are not to make others stumble (fall to sin), but more important we are not to allow ourselves (our own soul) to stumble. If we concentrate on our own soul and grow up spiritually, then we will have greater success in avoiding our participation in the failure of others.

Everyone has a volition and is held responsible for their own decisions, but the world is full of deceptions. False philosophies lead people astray. True they could avoid making wrong decisions in life, but it is true that a person who lacks Bible doctrine is a very young person in the spiritual sense (regardless of their physical age). The very young have little if any true wisdom and therefore when those who would mislead them come along, they are susceptible to the influence of the deception.

To stumble means to cause to fall, to entice, to trap, to deceive, to influence, to nag (nagging can cause others to sin simply due to the sheer annoyance of the constant barrage of nagging). All of these can cause others or lead others into sin. Peer pressure in school or social life can cause others to want to belong to fall, thus they are drawn into the sin of the group. They are at fault for their decision, but the leaders of the group have an even greater wrong charged against them.

False religions (all religions are false by the way - Christianity is not a religion but a relationship with God through Christ), and by religions we mean any belief that rejects God, His Word, His plan and so forth, but anyway, false religions are guilty of leading people away from God. Sometimes they lead people (those who are not yet saved) away from salvation because of other false teachings, sometimes they lead people (those who are already saved) away from their spiritual life through other false patterns of life. Gangs have a pattern of life which is criminal. The self righteous have false patterns of life which is arrogance.

Any attack against a believer is an attack against Christ because the believer is indwelled by Christ. So any stumbling that is inflicted against the believer is an attack against Christ and thus a triple whammy can come back on us as we studied yesterday. Better for a person who is guilty of this to die a quick death with a millstone (a huge stone) hung around their neck and both dropped into deep water. We (believers in Christ) are the apple of the eye of God, Zech. 2:8. As such we qualify (potentially) for great favorable treatment from God. Have you ever had or dreamed of having an extremely rich relative who liked you really well and they did lots of things for you? Well we do have that extremely rich relative - God the Father.

The potential for blessing means that blessing is not automatic. We need to be in fellowship, positive toward our daily study and actually study daily. We need to advance in our spiritual life. We need to apply what we learn to our daily life. We need to be responsible in the things that God expects us to be responsible in.

How many decisions do we make in life, which affect others? How many others have we misled, or failed to help when we had the opportunity to help, but decided against doing what we needed to do? You see most people think that arguing with others or gossip or inducing someone to go out drinking with you are the extent of the things that we are currently studying, but when we decide to withhold aid when we have the means of giving is just as bad. Sometimes doing nothing is as bad as actively causing others to sin.

'... for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink; I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.'

So back to the mirror. Look deeply into your own eyes. Are you doing all that you should be doing? Are you avoiding all that you should be avoiding? Are you doing what God expects of you? Recall those three areas of responsibility we have studied recently. All that you do or do not do in life not only affects you, but others as well. You do not live in a vacuum. You cannot pretend that others do not exist. You cannot pretend that your needs are all that concern to you.

God has a great deal to give, but to whom much is given, much is expected! If you do little what should you expect?

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
