Matthew 22:37-38

Lesson # Matt. 22:37-38
Study Material - Matt. 22:37-38

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Matt. 22:37-38

37 [de] Jesus [Iesous] said [epo] unto him [autos] , Thou shalt love [agapao] the Lord [kurios] thy [sou] God [theos] with [en] all [holos] thy [sou] heart [kardia] , and [kai] with [en] all [holos] thy [sou] soul [psuche] , and [kai] with [en] all [holos] thy [sou] mind [dianoia] .
38 This [houtos] is [esti] the first [protos] and [kai] great [megas] commandment [entole] . KJV-Interlinear

Matt. 22:37-38

37 And He said to him, 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.' 38 'This is the great and foremost commandment. NAS

The word for 'Hear' is 'Shema.' The Israelites and their descendants who came to be called Jews because they were of Judea, twice a day recited the 'Shema.' It always began, 'Hear, O Israel!' The Shema comes from Deu. 6:4-9; 11:13-21; and Num. 15:37-41. It is one of the most common of phrases that were memorized and recited by all of Israel. These verses when combined with Ex. 13:1-16, lay the very foundation of what every ones attitude should be toward God.

To love the Lord our God with all our being. To bind His doctrine on our arms and foreheads. To teach our children, to help them in their generation, and so that they too will teach their children and so forth to preserve future generations throughout human history.

There are basically three words used for love in the Greek. They are 'agape' which stands for a commitment of the mind. There is 'phile' which is more of a love of tenderness and affection. And there is 'eros' which is used in intimate love. The Hebrew word equivalent of 'agape' is 'aheb.' And that is the word used here in Jesus' response to the question.

The love here is a mental dedication to God through the decision and desire of wanting to learn and to grow up spiritually, and to the maximum. More often we will see those who are not dedicated to God, but to wanting their own way, or to wanting something of God which fits their chosen life style.

There are three components to this dedicated love. The soul, where our human life resides, and then the two component functions of the soul - the heart and the mind.

The heart is a muscle in the body which pumps blood. It is a working part which without, we would have no circulation of blood and thus we would die, for lack of supplied nourishment which the blood carries throughout the body. In the soul there is a 'heart' like function. It circulates Bible doctrine, or whatever you have learned in life, throughout your soul. You think, therefore your 'heart' of soul is functioning.

The mind is the resident storehouse of your information. Within it resides all that you have learned in life. You cannot use (or circulate) what you have not learned. If you learn right things, then you circulate right things within your soul. If you have learned and are influenced by bad things which you have retained within your mind, then you circulate bad things throughout your soul. Your decisions, words, and actions in life are therefore based on the content and function of your soul.

The greatest priority we can have in life, is to learn Bible doctrine, and to have it and to use it in our daily life. But then we all knew that, didn't we?

Jesus says, 'This is the great and foremost commandment.'

It is not how we live, but what we think. How we live will be guided by what we think. If we think Gods Words of wisdom and follow His principles of doctrine, then our life style will follow accordingly. If we do not think Gods Words, then we will be compromising our life on a daily basis.

A healthy soul requires an inventory, a storehouse of Bible doctrine, from which the heart may circulate spiritual nourishment throughout the soul. Without the appropriate spiritual nourishment, then the soul will be deprived, starving slowly through life, and will deteriorate and eventually die.

There is only one way to get Gods word into your soul and that is by studying the Bible daily. There is only one way to make that spiritual information you study beneficial to you and that is to be in fellowship when you study. There is only one way to grow up spiritually and that is to apply what you learn, to your daily life from the sphere of fellowship. It is really just that simple. God does all of the real work.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
