Matthew 23:25-26

Lesson # Matt. 23:25-26
Study Material - Matt. 23:25-26

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Matt. 23:25-26

25 Woe [ouai] unto you [humin] , scribes [grammateus] and [kai] Pharisees [Pharisaios] , hypocrites [hupokrites] ! for [hoti] ye make clean [katharizo] the outside [exothen] of the cup [poterion] and [kai] of the platter [paropsis] , but [de] within [esothen] they are full [gemo] of [ek] extortion [harpage] and [kai] excess [akrasia] .
26 Thou blind [tuphlos] Pharisee [Pharisaios] , cleanse [katharizo] first [proton] that which is within [entos] the cup [poterion] and [kai] platter [paropsis] , that [hina] the outside [ektos] of them [autos] may be [ginomai] clean [katharos] also [kai] . KJV-Interlinear

Matt. 23:25-26

25 'Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence. 26 'You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may become clean also. NAS

Extortion and self indulgence are two more characteristics of the spiritually negative person. They use others and take advantage of them for their own personal gain and self satisfaction.

Jesus uses an analogy of the cup and the dish. These are two items upon and in which, wine and delicacies are served. The dish ware looks beautiful (as in fine china), and this beautiful dinnerware gives the impression that the foods are of the highest quality and thus very desirable. But upon closer examination what is revealed is that the foods and drink are crawling with maggots and rot beyond imagination. The rot is not easily discernible to the untrained eye and therefore one can easily be fooled into partaking in the rotten foods served.

So it is with spiritual decay which is closely followed by moral decay in the life of the spiritually negative person. The Pharisees spent their time taking care of their outward appearance and little time in taking care of their inner soul.

The basis and foundation of life begins within the inner soul and in turn will overflow to the outer exterior of the body. Then, of course, anything within will overflow to the exterior, whether it is good inside or bad. But to clean up the outer life without cleaning up the inside of ones soul first does no good. It is an exercise in futility. The person ignoring his own soul is a fool.

Jesus accuses the Pharisees of using extortion against the very people they were intended to serve due to the very nature of their chosen occupation. He also accuses them of robbing the people of the very content of the spiritual information intended for their soul, as well as robbing them of the content of their pocketbooks.

All this for the gratification of their own selfish interests at the expense of the masses of peoples of whom they had no respect, but without whom they would have no means of income or purpose. An interesting contradiction.

The Pharisees spent all of their time in making themselves appear very pious and implying that they had authority from God, but they had no spiritual content of soul and therefore their front was false at best. They used their positions as priests to take advantage of people for their own selfish interests. They did not use their positions to serve people spiritual information with which people might have an opportunity to grow up spiritually, and therefore advance in their spiritual lives.

God appoints everyone to the positions they hold in life. We learned that from our study in Daniel. So these Pharisees were appointed to the positions they held, by God. God gave them an opportunity to serve people and to glorify God by virtue of the positions they held. They abused their positions and took advantage of their power and authority to help themselves in their worldly affairs and ignored their spiritual obligations.

People who are negative toward God are guilty of this abuse. Any person who ignores God in their life, is in a self indulgent mode. If one does not think Gods wisdom, then he thinks worldly opinion and that by definition is anti-God.

To clean up ones life, you have to begin with your soul. To clean up your soul you have to learn Bible doctrine. The spiritual life begins in the soul. What you think is what you are. Any other concept is false.

If your soul is filled with Bible doctrine then that thought process will overflow to how you live your daily life. Cleanliness (of soul) is next to Godliness (the spirit filled life).

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
