Phil. 2:3-4

Lesson # Phil. 2:3-4
Study Material - Phil. 2:3-4

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Phil. 2:3-4

3 Let nothing [medeis] be done through [kata] strife [eritheia] or [e] vainglory [kenodoxia]; but [alla] in lowliness of mind [tapeinophrosune] let [hegeomai] each [allelon] esteem [hegeomai] other [allelon] better than [huperecho] themselves [heautou].
4 Look [skopeo] not [me] every man [hekastos] on his own things [heautou], but [alla] every man [hekastos] also [kai] on the things [ho] of others [heteros]. KJV-Interlinear

3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than himself; 4 do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. NASB

Selfishness and conceit look inward to ones self and are contrasted with the humility of caring for others. All sin begins with arrogance. Arrogance is the granddaddy of all sin. Lucifer started his fall with arrogance, a simple thought in his own mind, and degenerated to total decay from that point.

Satan thinks only of himself. He cares nothing for anyone or anything. He would use people and even the angels that followed him in rebellion from God, and he would let them all go to their destruction just so he could be proven right. He is the quintessence of conceit and selfishness.

So what is selfishness and conceit? It is the inward view of life. Caring not for anyone, but placing ones self ahead of everything and everyone else. It is the use of others to advance self. It is the attitude that everyone is expendable so long as it gets you ahead, or accomplishes the goal or objective you set.

It looks at life and sees only things for the taking, things for the satisfaction of ones lusts and desires. And beware anyone who gets in the way. That is the worlds view ultimately. Apart from God, life degenerates into selfishness, or everyone for them self. Look after number one, and sacrifice all others who get in the way.

Selfishness and conceit leave no room for the opinions or needs of others. It closes out any ones views and even tries to destroy opposing opinions. It breeds jealousy and hate, vindictiveness and implacability. It justifies taking because it is there, whether you are entitled or not. It justifies hurting others in gossip, the tool cowards use of oppressing others. Selfishness and conceit spread out into many other sins and further the degeneracy of the soul.

So do nothing from these sins, for they are degenerate, and subtle. They will suck you into oblivion before you realize it. Bible doctrine teaches us of their existence and helps us to discern between these sins and the humility of the spiritual life.

So what is humility? Talking slow, walking with ones head down? No. Humility is the absence of sin. One is confident in life with humility. A person can be the best in any field of endeavor. Whether it is being the best athlete, the best cook, the best rocket scientist, the best news commentator. Humility is the attitude of the soul, not the external view of ones posture. None of this 'ah, shucks' stuff. That isn't humility, that is shyness from lack of confidence socially.

Knowledge looks to others in the light of doctrine. Doctrine gives us orientation to life. From doctrine we know and understand why we are here on this planet. Why there is life and death, and what occurs after death. We know that to grow up in life requires spiritual assets, which many people do not have, and therefore they suffer in this world, mostly because they fail to learn the real secrets of life, which comes from Bible doctrine.

The mature believer does not have to look to his own interests, because God takes care of that for him. He looks to the interests of others in what ever appropriate manner is available. And God provides those opportunities as well. People living under the control of their sin natures have only one road to follow and that leads to destruction. People living under the control of God, have a better road to follow, and that leads to blessing and a fulfilling life.

Both people live in this world, both have problems, both have good ties and bad times, but the believer with doctrine can deal with life and move forward, while the person without doctrine, can only degenerate into eventual misery.

By advancing in Bible doctrine, you become a hero in the spiritual realm. Heaven celebrates at your every victory. You become an example to others, sometimes you are not aware of it, sometimes you may have the opportunity to help others either through giving of yourself, your time, your money, or your wisdom. And you do not place limitations have of strings attached to your gift. You do not place requirements on others, giving them the opportunity to respond in the correct manner to doctrine or even to reject your views. That is their right of decision. God will deal with them in due course. You merely fulfill your responsibility of helping to the extent you are able, and not trying to coerce others into your mold of thinking. None of this crusade stuff, for making the world a better place, in your view. The world is full or people who crusade for one thing or another and it often results in violence.

We will never find fulfillment in the election polls, in crusades, in technology, in medicine, in anything the world has to offer. Only through Bible doctrine will we find a full life and the solution to our problems. In case we have overlooked it, the Bible has been around for centuries, before the technologies of today, before the modern marvels we have today. How in the world did people manage before computers and the microwave oven, before the automobile, before buggies, before the horses, before... well whatever was before that. The world is not going to dry up and blow away. Jesus Christ controls history, so rest assured that there will be a solution revealed for every problem whether on a global scale or on a personal level.

Act not out of sin or the sources of sin, but act out of doctrine.
