Phil. 3:3-8

Lesson # Phil. 3:3-8
Study Material - Phil. 3:3-8

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Phil. 3:3-8

3 For [gar] we [hemeis] are [esmen] the circumcision [peritome], which [ho] worship [latreuo] God [theos] in the spirit [pneuma], and [kai] rejoice [kauchaomai] in [en] Christ [Christos] Jesus [Iesous], and [kai] have [peitho] no [ou] confidence [peitho] in [en] the flesh [sarx].
4 Though [kaiper] I [ego] might [echo] also [kai] have [echo] confidence [pepoithesis] in [en] the flesh [sarx]. If any [ei tis] other man [allos] thinketh [dokeo] that he hath whereof he might trust [peitho] in [en] the flesh [sarx], I [ego] more [mallon]:
5 Circumcised [peritome] the eighth [oktaemeros] day, of [ek] the stock [genos] of Israel [Israel], of the tribe [phule] of Benjamin [Beniamin], an Hebrew [Hebraios] of [ek] the Hebrews [Hebraios]; as touching [kata] the law [nomos], a Pharisee [Pharisaios];
6 Concerning [kata] zeal [zelos], persecuting [dioko] the church [ekklesia]; touching [kata] the righteousness [dikaiosune] which [ho] is in [en] the law [nomos], [ginomai] blameless [amemptos].
7 But [alla] what things [hostis] were [en] gain [kerdos] to me [moi], those [tauta] I counted [hegeomai] loss [zemia] for [dia] Christ [Christos].
8 Yea [alla] doubtless [menounge], and [kai] I count [hegeomai] all things [pas] but loss [zemia] for [einai] [dia] the excellency [huperecho] of the knowledge [gnosis] of Christ [Christos] Jesus [Iesous] my [mou] Lord [kurios]: for [dia] whom [hos] I have suffered the loss [zemioo] of all things [pas], and [kai] do count [hegeomai] them [einai] but dung [skubalon], that [hina] I may win [kerdaino] Christ [Christos], KJV-Interlinear

3 for we are the true circumcision, who worship in the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh, 4 although I myself might have confidence even in the flesh. If anyone else has a mind to put confidence in the flesh, I far more: 5 circumcised the eighth day, of the nation of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the Law, a Pharisee; 6 as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to the righteousness which is in the Law, found blameless. 7 But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8 More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish in order that I may gain Christ, NASB

The true circumcision is related to the thoughts and content of the soul, not the dead and worthless piece of skin between your legs, which if cut away is simply discarded. Now note the contrast Paul gives us. The worldly or negative person leads a life guided by his sin nature. The spiritual person leads a life guided by Bible doctrine.

We worship in the Spirit of God, that is the Holy Spirit in control of our soul, and in the glory of Christ, His work on the Cross which obtained salvation for us, followed by His being seated at the right hand of God the Father, the highest place of honor in existence. That is the glory of Christ. And we share in that Glory because as a result of believing in Christ and thus being saved, we are automatically in union with Christ and share many other blessings as well. See the blessings list on the Index page..

'In the Spirit' refers to our being in fellowship, that is when we are in fellowship. At salvation we are indwelled by the Holy Spirit. We are indwelled by all three members of the trinity in fact, but here Paul is making reference to the Holy Spirit and His function in His ministry to each one of us as He processes Bible doctrine through out human spirit and into our soul. There is a chart on the Index page which gives you a picture of this function.

Being indwelled by the Holy Spirit is not enough however. Though the Holy Spirit is in each one of us, He is not in control of our souls unless we place ourselves into fellowship with God. And we should know by now that this is a matter of our confessing our sins to God the Father in our confession prayer, wherein He will place us back into fellowship. That is until we commit another sin. Then we are instantly our of fellowship again, requiring us to present yet another confession prayer for that or those new sins and so forth.

True worship is from the position of being 'in the Spirit', in fellowship. All worship while out of fellowship is worthless. Just as that dead piece of skin is worthless. What is worship? It is our daily Bible study, our daily prayers with our thanks and requests ad such. It is our thought content from moment to moment as we live our daily lives while being in fellowship. You can swing a hammer, drive a vehicle, knit, cook, negotiate, write, type, eat, sleep and the list is endless, while in fellowship or while out of fellowship. But being in fellowship is far better because you are in effect logging time in Gods Court, racking up gold, silver, and precious stones for your life both now and in eternity.

This gives us confidence, a relaxed mental attitude, comfort in life, poise when pressures strike and so forth, because we place our confidence in God and His Word. We do not place our confidence in the flesh, which that piece of circumcised dead flesh represents. We do not count on getting a good life or even salvation and a place in heaven by means of our birth, nor by means of our color, nor by means of our culture or heritage, nor by means of our bank balance, social standing, titles or lack thereof, nor by means of our education, IQ, or credentials or anything else of this world. We cannot even set up standards to which we feel everyone should adhere.

In this way we do not make an issue of the sins of others. Their sins are irrelevant, because we have all sinned, and all sin is evil, therefore we all originate from evil. Ugly thought isn't it. And we thought that just because we haven't robbed a bank, or committed murder, or engaged in degenerate sex of some type, that we were somehow a little better than 'those' people. Couldn't be more wrong.

Bible doctrine is the issue, not sin. For the unbeliever, faith in Christ is the issue. For the believer, attitude toward Bible doctrine (Bible study) in the issue. God will cure the sins and the tendency people have in engaging in sin. You and I will never change anyone. And the more we try the more defensive and turned off people will get if we try to force the 'stop sinning' lecture..

Paul had credentials. He was circumcised. He was a Hebrew. He was Roman citizen. He was a Pharisee, educated in the Law. And as he adds, found blameless by the standards the Priesthood had established from their false interpretations of that same Law. But from true Biblical standards, Paul was as wicked as they come. He was self righteous and murdered people and persecuted them based on that distorted and self righteous standard.. A standard which, by the way, was a twisting of, and a distortion of, the very Law that God gave Moses.

Yet all that he perceived he had accomplished in his career successes in the priesthood was but loss in the final analysis. No one wins in the jungle. Everyone eventually loses. Only in Bible doctrine is there a place for a winner in everyone of us. And we do not have to hustle through life in order to attain it. God does all the work. He did all the work in creation. He did all the work on the Cross. He does all the work in our learning Bible doctrine. We cannot see Him, feel, smell, taste, hear Him. Our spiritual life is beyond our senses, as it is beyond our ability to help it along.

Therefore, Paul states that the goals of this life are not found in the flesh, because all flesh dies and rots away. It is discarded and its destiny is void of anything of substance. Your education, your assets, anything you might possess, or think that you possess, you will eventually lose. Because you will one day die, and all that you will take with you into eternity is the content of your soul. Bible doctrine is the only thing of value that will survive in eternity. No wood, hay, and stubble will ever get into heaven.
