Phil. 4:8-9

Lesson # Phil. 4:8-9
Study Material - Phil. 4:8-9

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Phil. 4:8-9

8 Finally [loipon], brethren [adelphos], whatsoever things [hosos] are [esti] true [alethes], whatsoever things [hosos] are honest [semnos], whatsoever things [hosos] are just [dikaios], whatsoever things [hosos] are pure [hagnos], whatsoever things [hosos] are lovely [prosphiles], whatsoever things [hosos] are of good report [euphemos]; if there be any [ei tis] virtue [arete], and [kai] if there be any [ei tis] praise [epainos], think [logizomai] on these things [tauta].
9 Those things [tauta], which [hos] ye have [manthano] both [kai] learned [manthano], and [kai] received [paralambano], and [kai] heard [akouo], and [kai] seen [eido] in [en] me [emoi], do [prasso]: and [kai] the God [theos] of peace [eirene] shall be [esomai] with [meta] you [humon]. KJV-Interlinear

8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things. 9 The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things; and the God of peace shall be with you. NASB

Pursue your life in the following pattern of seven characteristics which encumber all manner of Bible doctrine, and define a mature believer.

Whatever is true and honorable with regard to our thoughts and motives.

Whatever is right and pure with regard to the rules of justice and righteousness in our lives.

Whatever is lovely and reputable with regard to our interactions with others.

Whatever is worthy of praise with regard to the sum total of our spiritual life and its source - God.

Your life begins with what you think. What you think is what you are. Not the clothes you wear, not the foods you eat, not the car you drive, not the home you live in, not the crowd you hang out with. Nothing that can be measured or even detected by the senses, is what you are. But your thoughts are the real you. Your motives are the result of your thoughts, and they define your priorities, your intents of soul. Through these, God is able to sort out and segregate, and discern who the real you really is.

Righteousness and justice define where you live and the source of your thoughts. There are two places where you originate your thoughts - the world and Bible doctrine. They are obtained while you are either in fellowship and under the control of the Holy Spirit, or while you are out of fellowship and under the control of your sin nature. So where you live is not in some physical palace or home, made of concrete or wood or steel. Your real residence is in your soul and the controls which are in effect over your soul. True righteousness and justice come from Bible doctrine. Your residence is determined by your own volition. Your either comply with Gods commands and remove those shoes of filth in your soul and consequently are allowed into His presence, in fellowship, or you don't comply and you live your life under the control of your sin nature. Pursue the better of the two - fellowship.

Lovely and reputable are the descriptive terms of dealing with others. Be nice. Don't set double standards for family, friends, co-workers, strangers. We have no choice but to live in this world with others, with bureaucracies that can be frustrating or even tyrannical or chaotic. Love is the key to dealing with others. Not an emotional love, but the concept of impersonal love, 'agape', the attitude of toleration, compassion, patience, poise and so forth. Deal with kids with lots of slack in your rope. Kids can be trying and often do not listen to your instructions. But then this is the way most adults relate to their own Bible study - not following instructions, not following through with the things they should follow through with. Kids can often teach us a lot about ourselves with respect to our spiritual lives and the way that God deals with us for our failure to follow instructions. Other people can teach us a lot about the way the sin nature works. We cannot smell our own stink, but others can. So it is with the sin nature. We may not be able to see our own faults, but we can see the faults and defects in others. Observation should be done in the privacy of your own soul without judgment and for the purpose of learning and teaching yourself what not to do.

The sum total of all of this is what God provides us by grace. We cannot earn it, nor can we deserve it. It is a gift to us without strings. And that is worthy of praise - God, His word and His plan for each one of our lives. Ponder what you learn. Assimilate the information. Apply it to your life and grow up in your spiritual life.

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
