15 And he said to me, "The waters which you saw where the harlot sits, are peoples and multitudes and nations and tongues. NASB
The phrase, 'whore that sits on many waters,' from the first verse in this chapter, is a reference not to a single individual, but to the entire system of false religions and philosophies and so forth from throughout history, and especially in the Tribulation where they will all come together to form one coherent yet evil religion sponsored by the anti-christ. The waters, is a reference to the many peoples, from all cultures and nations and generations throughout history, but especially in the Tribulation, encompassing the entire world. Believe it or not, it was Karl Marx who said that religion was 'the opium of the people.' If you control the religion, then you control the people. Although Marx was more into social reforms, than religious reforms, he was very close to spelling out the plan of Satan, which Satan has been developing since long, long ago. The posture of the harlot, is sitting on these many waters, and that is a picture of dominance and authority. Just as a city or major port occupies a commanding position on the economy and commerce of a given region, so too, this harlot, religion, will occupy a commanding position and authority over all people on the planet. That was the design of Satan and that will be the accomplishment of his plan by the time of the Tribulation. However, one quick change will come along in the latter half of the Tribulation, that might surprise you. Satan along with all of his world leaders and peoples, will launch a campaign to obliterate all religion. Doesn't that seem rather odd, given that he has spent all of the time of human history developing religions, and that he has or will accomplish a universal religion or system of religions, throughout the world, and then dismantle it all virtually over night? Do you know why he will do it and why he will succeed?
