10 standing at a distance because of the fear of her torment, saying,' Woe, woe, the great city, Babylon, the strong city! For in one hour your judgment has come.' NASB Using language of accommodation, the city herein is portrayed as a real city. The Bible must be interpreted in the time in which it was written, and the city was the usual portrayal of power and commerce, back in those days. Everyone went to the city to trade, often times to live, and certainly to seek out entertainment. The city was and still is, the center of activity for society. People are impressed when you speak of New York, London, Hong Kong, Paris, and so forth. When you hear of them you think of wealth and power and activities in many forms. The city symbolizes many of the worldly characteristics to which we have all become accustomed - wealth, history, romance, etc. However, this particular city is more than just a collection of buildings and streets, it is a metropolis of philosophy, government, and policy, invented by Satan and extended around the world. This is not a one city world reference, but to the collective attributes of power and activity, all rolled up into one defining concept called Babylon. So, the population will be standing (figuratively speaking) and watching the entire world system collapse all around them. And the world will be amazed, in awe as it were, as to just how easily and swiftly the entire complex of world systems will come apart. Standing back, again figuratively speaking, so that they (each person) do not get caught up in the disintegration process, of the world. But as we will see later, that separation of ones self from the world, will not be possible for most of those people, so intertwined they are, within the world right down to the very core of their own thoughts, and almost inseparable. They will be in fear, not wanting to get caught up in the destruction, but yet mourning over the loss of that which they looked to and depended on for their lifestyle.
