Dan. 9:14-19

Lesson # Dan. 9:14-19
Study Material - Dan. 9:14-19

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Dan. 9:14-19

14 'Therefore, the LORD has kept the calamity in store and brought it on us; for the LORD our God is righteous with respect to all His deeds which He has done, but we have not obeyed His voice. 15 'And now, O Lord our God, who hast brought Thy people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand and hast made a name for Thyself, as it is this day-- we have sinned, we have been wicked. 16 'O Lord, in accordance with all Thy righteous acts, let now Thine anger and Thy wrath turn away from Thy city Jerusalem, Thy holy mountain; for because of our sins and the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and Thy people have become a reproach to all those around us. 17 'So now, our God, listen to the prayer of Thy servant and to his supplications, and for Thy sake, O Lord, let Thy face shine on Thy desolate sanctuary. 18 'O my God, incline Thine ear and hear! Open Thine eyes and see our desolations and the city which is called by Thy name; for we are not presenting our supplications before Thee on account of any merits of our own, but on account of Thy great compassion. 19 'O Lord, hear! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, listen and take action! For Thine own sake, O my God, do not delay, because Thy city and Thy people are called by Thy name.'

Daniel concludes his confession in verse 14, and then begins his plea for compassion, Gods turning away from wrath in verse 15, and then his request for a hearing and action in verse 17.

All of mans calamity in life ultimately comes from mans rejection of God in some fashion. The Israelites rejected God, they ignored His teachings, His counsel, and they sought the ways of the world, the pursuit of their own pleasures and ideas in direct defiance of Gods wisdom. It is no different for us today.

The Israelites had numerous historical miracles performed for them. One of the greatest events is the exodus out of Egypt where God was actually present in the form of a pillar of fire by night and a dark cloud by day, parting the sea, and destroying the Egyptian military while Israel raised not even one bow or spear. Yet still the Israelites in large part, rejected God and continued to turn away from His advice from the scriptures.

So calamity, misery, doom rained down on them. Generation after generation had troubles. Century after century they Israelites kept turning away from God and never seemed to learn the error of their ways. Other cultures throughout the world did the same. They rejected God, were negative to the max in many instances and became degenerate to the extreme. Those peoples from all over the world, disappeared from history. Now they are vacation spots where we can go see how this group or that group lived a thousand or two thousand years ago. We can visit their pillars of stone where they tracked the sun, their alters where most likely many people were sacrificed rather than animals. The stones remain but the peoples are gone.

God is righteous and we are not. When we depart from Him, when we exclude Him from our lives, then trouble is right around the corner just itching to get at us, and God monitors the evil in our lives and the trouble He will release against us. Were it not for His grace, we would all be destroyed at the first sign of evil in our lives, but God is patient and compassionate, knowing that we are thoroughly stupid as a race of bipeds.

The first order of worship is confession, or the acknowledgment of our failures in life. We are dust. What is you attitude toward dust? Well go dust your home. Now what is your attitude toward dust? That is Gods attitude toward us. We are nothing though we, in our own minds, might think highly of ourselves, we are really nothing when Gods wisdom is not inside our souls. So we are surrounded in life with evidence of God. We are surrounded with history and evidence of God. Much of our societies norms and standards have their beginning and/or have been influenced by the principles contained in the Bible. The worlds religions are cheap substitutes or attempted copies of our faith, Christianity, with their own little twisted quirks which reject God in general and the Son of God in particular. They are not honorable faiths, but lies that distract people away from truth and sentence them to the lake of fire. What is honorable about that. There is no honor in the 'good intentions' of people. What is mans righteousness? What is mans good intentions? Isaiah described them as heavily used filthy menstrual rags. Actually his description was much worse, so what of mans righteousness now? Daniel sets it straight.

God and God alone has righteousness - sinless perfection. We are commanded to be as He is, but that can only be when we first receive His righteousness by means of our faith in the Savior (believing in Christ), and then second in transforming our minds (our soul) by learning His Word (establishing our pattern of life).

But man rejects God and misery is our wage.

So humility is the first order of business. Once we set aside our selfish wants, once we start orienting to reality and to life, then we begin to see that there is a greater purpose in history. Certainly we have our needs and our wishes. For some it just another meal. For others it is a friend, lover, spouse, family, job, income, home, entertainment, etc. The list goes on and on. Just add your items to the list. God is well aware of your wants and needs. And God has made a name (reputation) for Himself. He has magnified His word above His reputation, for it is through His word that we have all our relationship with Him established and maintained. Reject His word and you might as well jump off the cliff for all the good it will do you.

Based on Gods reputation are prayers heard. Based on Gods overall divine plan which we call the Divine Decrees, are all actions performed. Because of His name, Deu. 9:4, Eze. 36:22 are all things done. Not based on mans merit, not even for mans sake.

God placed His name on the line. He imputed eternal life into everyone who believed in Him. These are Gods chosen. He gave His rest to those who advanced to spiritual maturity. These are Gods city. He invested His Word in those who are positive toward Him. This is Gods mountain, Bible doctrine.

Will he listen to whines of people? No. Will He listen to prayer consistent with His Word? Yes. Have the Israelites earned the right to return to Jerusalem? No. But God promised they would return. God promised in spite of word history, the rise and fall of Empires, the captive status of the Israelites. They could not gain their right to return apart from Gods intervention. God hears and He forgives. God sees and He acts. God performs in accordance with His name and on behalf of His chosen.

Those who reject God benefit indirectly only because they occupy the same planet as mature believers. But I wouldn't call having air to breath a major accomplishment. There is much more to life than the basics and God provides greater grace (the book of James) to those who advance to spiritual maturity.

Daniel has acknowledged the failure of His people. He has asked for forgiveness and for compassion not based on the needs of the people, or their right to anything (people have no rights as dust is nothing worthy of rights) but based on the reputation. of God, His promises, and His plan.

Now God is going to deliver and answer to Daniel. Not only will the prayer be answered in the affirmative, the people will return to Jerusalem on schedule (the king of Persia is going to issue that decree soon), but this return is going to be a pattern of a greater return and a permanent historical cancellation of the disgrace (desolation) of mankind and sin and death.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
