Ecclesiastes 3:3

Lesson # Eccl. 3:3
Study Material - Eccl. 3:3

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Eccl. 3:3

3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; A time to tear down, and a time to build up.

Is there ever a time for killing? Yes. Just as there is a time for healing. Kill, 'harag', destroy, smite with deadly intent, execute, put to death. Heal, 'raphah', repair, mend, cure, make whole.

To tear down, 'parats', to burst out, compel, disperse, breach, scatter. To build up, 'banah', to build, construct, add children, increase, make.

Killing here has to do with justice, or the operation of judgment. On the one hand there is Gods judgment and He is the perfect killing machine, the most precise, the most accurate, the fairest, and His purpose is never in question when the moment of judgment arrives.

Too often people get the impression that Jesus Christ was a long haired weakling of a man, who just roamed around loving everyone. And that is simply no true. The Bible describes Christ in many passages, and a picture of a weak person is never used ever in the scriptures. When David was on one of his bad days, refusing to repent from his lazy ways, Christ appeared over Jerusalem, with a flaming sword, ready to execute judgment on that city. Everyone was moments from death. Of course there was a principle being taught there. David was to acquire a site for the temple, and he had not done it. Where there is no temple there is no God, and no God means no salvation, and no salvation means instant and permanent death for all. David of course got with the program instantly and repented and got back on track in his spiritual life.

There are other instances when killing was necessary. Joshua for example was ordered to kill every living thing, men, women, children, animals, when he began conquering the land. At the second advent Christ will return to earth in all his power and glory, and riding a white war horse. When he first steps on the ground the earth will shake in mighty earthquakes, worldwide. Judgment and death will scream out of his sword and mouth killing millions if not billions of unbelievers and negative believers. The blood will flow as high as the horses bridle for 600 miles in the Middle East.

So God uses judgment to cancel out or terminate degeneracy as He did in Sodom and Gomorrah. He also uses it to terminate individuals in life who have continually rejected Him and followed a path of wickedness. Killing is also used in the carrying out of justice, such as in the execution of criminals, people who are so bad that they are beyond rehabilitation. Note that this killing, all of them mentioned above is not murder. There is a difference. Murder is the taking of a life without due process, or rights of judicial process. Murder is a criminal activity, whereas killing or the termination of a human life, is the result of a judicial process whereby all the facts have been considered and there is no doubt that the person is guilty of the most despicable crimes. God always follows due process. He never executes judgment until all the facts are in and the decision is rendered based on all the facts, the true facts. God never makes mistakes.

War is another mode of killing, but it is considered in verse 8.

After judgment, there needs to be a time for repair, for healing, for recovery, so the healing process necessary is several fold. First to regain ones poise, or perspective with regard to the environment around you. If disaster has struck, the you need to assess your situation and get yourself organized for the cleanup and the rebuilding process.

Spiritually, we get hammered by God and we need to realize it when it happens. Our recovery is simple. Get back on the daily Bible study program, get back into fellowship, get back to a consistent spiritual growth program in your life. It may take a little time to get back on track and to recover what you have lost spiritually if you have been away from doctrine for a while, but then life is full of examples of recovery and the long process of getting back to a normal life. A flood takes your home, so you have to wait out the flood, get your insurance in order, arrange for the cleanup, get plans and permits, and money, etc, and then rebuild or repair. These things just do not happen overnight. It could take over a year to get your life back to normal, but then people generally ignore their Bible study constantly and never really get onto the solid ground in their spiritual life. They go from one problem to another. From a killing or judgment to recovery and repeat them. Sooner or later the judgment may be your last.

Tearing down and building up spiritually has to do with the tearing down of your worldly values and the building up of your spiritual values. Bible study accomplishes this. But in life there are practical applications of this concept as well. If management doesn't work then you have to remove it, or retrain and redevelop your policies or approaches to life. If an advertising campaign does not work, then you scrap it out or modify it and look to another approach. If your life isn't working out, then you need to recognize whatever it is that you are doing wrong and make the necessary changes you need.

We always need to have an open mind, and be teachable. We need to be open to other ideas and approaches so that we can increase our education and knowledge in whatever career we have chosen. This does not mean accepting other ideas if they are obviously bad. For example idol worship is bad, so we do not pursue it, but we do keep our learning processes open so that we learn about idol worship and recognize its pitfalls.

IN these first two verses we see that many things God has control over, but we too have our choices in life. To learn and then to discern between what is right and what is wrong, when the time is right for justice and for recovery. A strong mental attitude, resolve, compassion, and empathy need to be balanced in life in order to deal with situations wisely. Dealing with life by means of principle is a good guideline, but flexibility in ones attitude in the appropriate manner comes from learning wisdom. And Gods Word is the only source of true wisdom in this world. To learn it you have to study it. There is no other means of learning and gaining wisdom.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
