Ecclesiastes 5:1

Lesson # Eccl. 5:1
Study Material - Eccl. 5:1

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Eccl. 5:1

1 Guard your steps as you go to the house of God, and draw near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools; for they do not know they are doing evil.

Guard yourself in your spiritual life. No one else can protect you but you. No one else knows your thoughts but you and God. There is a specific protocol for engaging in a relationship with God. You cannot depart from that process, even just a little bit. In that God is strict. To approach God in a wrong manner is foolhardy and destructive to your life.

Therefore guard yourself and obey the rules of conduct which God has laid down for your approach toward and dealings with Him. To approach God otherwise will come to no good for you.

There is only one sacrifice acceptable to God. This is of course focusing on your spiritual life subsequent to your having been saved. If you are a person who has not believed in Christ, then this context does not apply to you. No unbeliever can approach God except through the Cross, and that approach is very simple - believe in Christ and you are saved. That thought takes all of a second or two. Once you have believed in Christ, then the issues before you deal with your attitude toward Gods Word and whether or not you will study it daily, and study it properly in order to grow up spiritually.

Now for believers, the issue is guard your steps. Walking represents your conduct, your walking daily through your life, your daily activities. You walk on your feet. If your feet are clean that your walk is clean. If your feet are dirty, then your walk in life is defective. So do you wash your feet to have a good spiritual life. Yes. But this is a representation of the washing of the soul, not your little piggies.

What you think is what you are. So if your thoughts are of God, then your spiritual life is good. If your thoughts are not of God, then your life is that of the fool, or the wicked, or whatever you wish to call a defective life.

Listen and learn. Fools speak first (without forethought (no doctrine)), and think second. Wise persons think first (doctrine in the soul) then speak discretely. Many words are usually a cover for the lack of wisdom. How does that saying go, 'Dazzle them with BS.' You can fill in the appropriate words. By the way, a person with spiritual growth does not get offended easily. So words do not get a spiritually growing believer, upset. You should be open minded and very relaxed in your thinking.

So what is this sacrifice that we are to follow? Sacrifice is representative to your worship. We do not butcher bulls any more, but we do take the principles taught from those rituals of long ago. The fool, or the wicked person, or the out of fellowship believer would cheat on their spiritual life. They would bring flawed animals for their sacrifice. They would bring sick, lame, grade B animals. They were required to bring Grade A prime, but they were selfish and cheated on God, and consequently cheated on their own spiritual life.

People today do the same thing in a little different fashion. They do not study daily. They do not confess their sins to God. They are not in fellowship. Consequently they lack spiritual growth. They lack spiritual resources. They cannot live the spiritual life because they do not know anything and what they do know they apply incorrectly. Also, negative believers do not see what they are doing as being wrong. They act as Cain. He offered his own ideas for sacrifices and God rejected His ideas. Mans works are unequivocally rejected by God.

If you think that you can get by with just a little exposure to God, perhaps by attending church once and a while, by giving to charity on holidays, by giving to the church occasionally, by being nice to others once and a while, but otherwise living your life day to day as you see fit, rationalizing whatever you do as being ok (so long as you don't hurt anyone!!!), then you are just fooling yourself. You are corruption with a suit and tie, and probably a smile.

So guard your steps in life. Your spiritual life. Approach God in spirit (be in fellowship). Apply what you learn doctrinally to your daily life. No games. No attempts to fool others. No attempts to fool God. You can't. Don't imitate fools. They play games in life, winking at others, and fooling themselves.

Draw near to God in the proper manner as noted above, listen, learn, grow and come to possess spiritual assets that God makes available to anyone who approaches Him in the proper manner.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
