Exodus 2:5-10

Lesson # Exodus 2:5-10
Study Material - Exodus 2:5-10

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Ex. 2:5-10

5 Then the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the Nile, with her maidens walking alongside the Nile; and she saw the basket among the reeds and sent her maid, and she brought it to her. 6 When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the boy was crying. And she had pity on him and said, 'This is one of the Hebrews' children.' 7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh's daughter, 'Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?' 8 And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, 'Go ahead.' So the girl went and called the child's mother. 9 Then Pharaoh's daughter said to her, 'Take this child away and nurse him for me and I shall give you your wages.' So the woman took the child and nursed him. 10 And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she named him Moses, and said, 'Because I drew him out of the water.'

Between verses 5 and 11, some 40 years will pass as Moses grows up, Acts 7:22, also Heb. 11:24 and following. These other passages are important because we see the overall education of Moses. Not only the academic education but the social one as well.

To this point there are no names mentioned. Thus far a 'man' married and close relative. They had a child whom they kept hidden from a cruel law of murder. Eventually they had to place the child out in the world and pray for the best. They had their faith and that was about all.

God honors faith, but more than that, He honors strong faith. Faith that comes from persistent study of His Word, from application to ones daily life, from being 'perfect', that is in fellowship as a normal mode of ones life. God does not honor un-applied faith (the going through the motions of empty superficial worship), not empty faith (wishing on a rabbits foot).

A daughter of Pharaoh finds the basket and hears the cry of a beautiful infant. Not just any daughter but 'the' daughter, or heir apparent to Pharaoh. She was a prominent person in the royal family. She would be well versed in the current laws and decrees of Pharaoh, but here in her hand is a child that she instantly loves. She has no other child. How do we know? Moses is taken to his own mother and nursed. She receives wages for the service, then the child is returned to Pharaoh's daughter when weaned, and then grows up for the next 40 years, heir apparent to the throne. This makes Moses the only child of Pharaoh's daughter and when comparing the passages in Acts 7 and Heb. 11 we get a complete picture of the brilliance of Moses and his relative position in the royal family.

Who knows the truth? Pharaoh does not know. He discovers it in verse 15. How does all of this come together? By Gods grace and by no other means. The child was being watched by his own older sister to see what would become of him. She presumably overheard the conversation between Pharaoh's daughter and made herself known to the servants. Thus Moses was taken back to his own mother for nursing. This time he was under the protection of Pharaoh rather than the object of cursing from Pharaoh. The very household that would have him drowned, was now protecting Moses. God does have a sense of humor.

No names thus far, but only Moses which means 'to draw out'. It is an Egyptian name, not a Hebrew one. It is a gentile name which means that the Israelites will be drawn out not by their own volition but by the will of God.

Originally enticed by the convenience of sin some 400 years prior, or shall we say some 350 years prior if we subtract Moses 80 years from the total of the 430 that the Israelites lived in Egypt. The Israelites were eventually trapped by the sin that they chose. They were turned to the gods of Egypt and eventually enslaved to do their biding. Somewhere along the line a resurgence of faith arose, that now God would deliver them out of a terribly repressive Pharaoh. The former Pharaoh of centuries past wished to 'deal wisely' with the Hebrews. The current Pharaoh wished violence on them.

No names thus far, except that of Moses, 'drawn out'. And that is the basis for Gods grace in their lives and our as well. Given the choice of the conveniences of life, we, all of us, would choose for the conveniences over that repetitious study of Gods word. The life around us in here and now. Our senses entice us for the pleasures of life. Sometimes they are legitimate pleasures like good foods and entertainment. Sometimes they are illegitimate pleasures like lasciviousness or criminal activities. But both, excluding God in our lives, are equated to wickedness as they replace the spiritual life, with a carnal life excluding God. The carnal life results in a very deceptive trap and eventual slavery. Misery results.

Just as it is extremely difficult for an addict to get off the crutches that he is addicted to (drugs, alcohol, etc.), so also it is extremely difficult for a trapped person in carnality to get away from those powerful enticements that keep the ball and chains tightly locked on his life.

Moses was drawn out. God brought all of this together. Moses was in a basket and the basket was in the river. Moses could have fallen victim to a crocodile or hypothermia or starvation or all three. But he was not there long enough for any of those threats to occur.

Gods plan, which he decreed in eternity past was so detailed and complete that nothing is left to chance. We might view life as good or bad luck, as being in the right place at the right or wrong time, but by design, there is no such thing. Certainly we all make our own individual decisions, which God does not coerce upon us, but God has known of those decisions long before we made them and He made provision for us.

What are the odds that the daughter of the man who decreed the death of Moses, would discover the basket, would love the child rather than simply carrying out the death warrant, would find the exact mother of the child and have him nursed, and then raise him as her own? Long odds if you apply statistics calculations. But all of these things happened.

What are the odds in your life that things will either work out for the better or the worst? The answer is obvious. If you continue to ignore Bible doctrine. If you continue to give it cursory attention. If you continue in your stubborn ways. If you continue to be selfish rather than responsible to those around you. Then the odds of your having a miserable life are very good. That is, life's odds are very much against you.

If, on the other hand, you study your Bible daily, remain in fellowship, learn Gods will, apply Bible doctrine to your daily life, then the odds of life do not apply. God instead takes charge of your life and your happiness and contentment are certainties, never dependent on luck. Whatever risks that lie on or beneath the river are of no consequence because your basket (fellowship) protects you from all threats. The threats are always there, but your life is secure.

The names of everyone are of no importance. Only the basket and the one doing the drawing out (God) are important. Jesus Christ is God by the way. Rest assured that throughout this study Jesus Christ is always the focus. Though I often use the term 'God' the reference is to Christ unless the other members of the trinity are specifically mentioned, or unless the reference is to all three collectively.

Jesus Christ controls history. He leaves nothing to chance in each of our lives. He leaves nothing to chance regarding nations. The real question is, what are you going to do about your own life? Will you share your Bible knowledge with others? Will you hide in your embarrassment? Will you be faithful and honest? Will you be a hypocrite and phony? Will you be responsible in life or selfish? You control your own destiny through your attitude toward Gods Word. So if things go badly for you and you have ignored God, then you have only yourself to blame.
