Exodus 5:3-5

Lesson # Exodus 5:3-5
Study Material - Exodus 5:3-5

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Ex. 5:3-5

3 Then they said, 'The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please, let us go a three days' journey into the wilderness that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God, lest He fall upon us with pestilence or with the sword.' 4 But the king of Egypt said to them, 'Moses and Aaron, why do you draw the people away from their work? Get back to your labors!' 5 Again Pharaoh said, 'Look, the people of the land are now many, and you would have them cease from their labors!'

Moses and Aaron continue in their request, but with a different appeal. God has already told hem that they were to make their request and that Pharaoh would turn them down. They should have left it at that. But they didn't. They come up with their own concoction of an appeal.

The 'Hebrew' God. They depart from the reference of the nation 'Israel', the 'first born son' of God, and return to their earlier heritage reference 'Hebrew' A group of individuals, the descendants of Eber, the third generation following Shem, and who by the way lived to see and know, Jacob.

They mix fact, 'we have met with God', with fiction, 'He will destroy us if we do not comply'. This implies that Pharaoh will suffer a great loss if he were to lose his slaves. Soooo, it is to Pharaoh's advantage to let them go and do their sacrifices so that Pharaoh does not lose his labor force. A twist of the words but none the less they do not imply that there will be any suffering to Pharaoh other than the potential loss of workers. That the real suffering will come to the Hebrews for disobedience.

This whole line of argument does not impress Pharaoh, and even more, it will turn itself back against the Hebrews. If they want to continue being represented as Hebrew slaves rather than the new nation of Gods first born, then it will be so.

Note what happens. Man when he tries to contend with the carnal world on its own level, will always lose. By playing with the world rather than listening to Gods command and following it strictly, they bring more hardship on themselves.

Pharaoh is not impressed but throws the argument back onto them. 'Look at your people. They prosper. They are great in number. They are happy in their work. Why would you want to take them away from their happiness?'

Pharaoh plays with words. He has little regard for the God of the Hebrews. He has no regard for them as people. 'Should Pharaoh obey your God?' No is implied. 'Should Pharaoh command your people?' Yes is implied. He cannot see God but he can see the people.

Pharaoh sees two spokesmen from the Hebrews. One speaking through the other, and it is comical to Pharaoh. Moses should have taken this appearance on by himself and with greater confidence. Daniel did in his day. Daniel's three friends did, and they all faced greater threats than did Moses. They faced certain death. Moses faces only humiliation for himself and more work for his people. Moses is still thinking more about his own ego (still), than he is thinking about his people. Rest assured he will change but not yet.

Negative people play games with words. They look down on others as lessor people than themselves. Politicians play this game. 'Think of the children. A vote for me is a vote for the children.' As they appeal to the emotional aspects of people rather than the logical and rational thought of people.

People are always using something that sounds good and popular in an effort to accomplish some selfish desire they have. People without doctrine are fickle and easily swayed in emotional appeals. The only problem is that they keep being swayed from one point of view to another.. This is why you see changes, often, in public opinion polls, from one day to the next. If the general public were strong in doctrine, then their opinions would not change so readily, if at all. An unstable public in their thinking, is not a good sign for a nation. It is a sign of a weakness in the spiritual life throughout the nation.

The Hebrews will suddenly change as Pharaoh increases the pressure against them. A few verses ago they were all happy and bowing low in worship. Pretty soon they will be blaming Moses for their latest trouble. What happened to Gods promise of freedom? How could they forget it so quickly? Where is their faith?

The game of playing with words is not a new one. Pharaoh uses it to debate against Moses and Aaron. Actually Pharaoh is really playing with them and wishes to demonstrate his power against them verses Gods power that they allege.

Bible study brings discernment. A person who grows up spiritually is not easily fooled by the rhetoric of the world. A strong Bible student does not white wash over his responsibilities with pretenses like 'its for the children.' Which implies the justification for irresponsibility. 'Look at these Afghans. How happy they are. Why interfere in their lives with all this bombing?' And of course statements like these are simply lies intended to confuse the ignorant. 'Look at the Hebrews, how they prosper, how they like their work.'

Moses and Aaron's meeting came to an end. The request had been submitted and rejected. But they muddied the waters with their additional request and implications.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
