Exodus 5:6-11

Lesson # Exodus 5:6-11
Study Material - Exodus 5:6-11

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Ex. 5:6-11

6 So the same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters over the people and their foremen, saying, 7 'You are no longer to give the people straw to make brick as previously; let them go and gather straw for themselves. 8 But the quota of bricks which they were making previously, you shall impose on them; you are not to reduce any of it. Because they are lazy, therefore they cry out, 'Let us go and sacrifice to our God.' 9 'Let the labor be heavier on the men, and let them work at it that they may pay no attention to false words.' 10 So the taskmasters of the people and their foremen went out and spoke to the people, saying, 'Thus says Pharaoh, 'I am not going to give you any straw. 11 'You go and get straw for yourselves wherever you can find it; but none of your labor will be reduced.'

Pharaoh, that same day, issued his order (after the meeting with Aaron and Moses had been completed and they had gone away), an order increasing the workload of the Hebrews.

They had time to live their lives, in sort of a normal sense. They planted gardens and harvested their production, Deu. 11:10. They planted crops and caught fish, Num. 11:5. They were a labor force to be sure, but not an overly abused people. Sure the taskmasters beat them on occasion, and they were treated like the lowest of peoples. Though their numbers were great. There is now over 600,000 adult men in their ranks, which could be easily made into a formidable army, but they lacked two things, courage and leadership with courage. They were still on the light side in their spiritual lives. Not light as in seeing the light, but light as in insufficient.

Pharaoh could not simply let the request go with a denial of permission. Pharaoh was insulted. Negative people usually are sensitive and allow the slightest of things set them off. Pharaoh was king and his power and authority was not in question, yet he is going to abuse (again) that power and get even with the Hebrews, because they dare to even ask for a day off, and more so, they even 'suggested' that if Pharaoh didn't give them time to go worship, then God would punish them and it would be Pharaoh's fault. Pharaoh would even lose his 'faithful' servants.

No more time for gardens and fishing. Now they had to search the countryside for straw. Their workload effectively doubled, and their production was not to fall off even one brick, which quota they failed to meet. So they were punished, beaten as it were.

Pharaoh set forth his decree, 'So let it be written. So let it be done.' 'Thus says Pharaoh', definitely a sarcastic remark to their comment, 'Thus says the Lord.'

Pharaoh's attitude is that if God says something and nothing happens, then God must not be very powerful. Pharaoh, on the other hand makes his statements and things happen immediately. Most negative people look to the world and see only the things that they want to see. They use their senses and nothing more. If you cannot see it, taste it, etc. , then it must not be so.

Pharaoh, further leveled lies at them. They are a lazy people - they are slaves who work seven days a week. What Moses says is a lie - What Moses originally requested was direct from God. Pharaoh will not listen to reason, not will he consider their plight as a people. They are not Egyptians, therefore they have no rights. There are even double standards within the Egyptian peoples. One standard for those of position and power, and a standard for the common citizen.

The repercussions of this policy? Misery, and injustice for the lower level of humanity. We see a lot of this in Afghanistan. I thought I heard that their population was around 24 million, but they are ruled by this Taliban group which numbers in the hundreds for those of rank and in the thousands for their military. We have already mentioned the extreme atrocities in that country. What is the destiny of such cruel leadership? Isa. 10:1-7, stern warning against those who impose and carry out abusive laws. Their end will be as harsh or more so than that which they imposed on others, and the kicker is that there will be none to come to their aid. Where will they run? Who can they turn to for help? Where is their god. Pharaoh relies on his power and to some extent his own countries gods, but they are false, just as Allah is false.

I heard a captured Taliban member crying in an interview on TV this past day, 'Allah has betrayed us!', as the Taliban swiftly lose their hold on the country. They have had their day and their boasts of destroying the USA, Britain, Europe, and especially those 'of faith' who did not come to their aid. But then these people are scum criminals and nothing more, and their god is nothing but in their imaginations. Might as well be praying to a cave god, or a rock.

Moses presented God as the God of Israel. Jehovah, the personal name of He who is the eternally existing one. Ra is not eternal. Allah is not eternal. They are both figments of the imagination. And so who do they turn to? When God is rejected, there is no one to come to the rescue. No one. It is interesting that a decade go the Russians sent years fighting in the country and could not crack it open. We in the USA spend less than two months and it falls. When God is on your side and right needs to be vindicated, then events happen quickly. This is an obvious situation in which the USA acted correctly. And since we are gaining ground, then God has obviously been with us.

If, on the other hand, we had become a nation of negative people, then the outcome could have been far worse. That is, no victories over terrorists, more fear, more terrorism and such.

'Thus says Pharaoh,' is the attitude of arrogance, which has led to cruelty, and injustices. There are, however, enough people within the Hebrew community who have become positive toward God and have advanced sufficiently in their spiritual lives such that God 'has heard their cries', their prayers of deliverance. God hears all prayers of those in fellowship. God has a plan for the history of individuals, of peoples, of nations, of the world. 'Thus says the Lord', carries the weight of reality. 'Thus says Pharaoh', carries no weight whatsoever. Psa. 125.

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
