Exodus 6:14-27

Lesson # Exodus 6:14-27
Study Material - Exodus 6:14-27

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Ex. 6:14-27

14 These are the heads of their fathers' households. The sons of Reuben, Israel's first-born: Hanoch and Pallu, Hezron and Carmi; these are the families of Reuben.

15 And the sons of Simeon: Jemuel and Jamin and Ohad and Jachin and Zohar and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman; these are the families of Simeon.

16 And these are the names of the sons of Levi according to their generations: Gershon and Kohath and Merari; and the length of Levi's life was one hundred and thirty-seven years. 17 The sons of Gershon: Libni and Shimei, according to their families. 18 And the sons of Kohath: Amram and Izhar and Hebron and Uzziel; and the length of Kohath's life was one hundred and thirty-three years. 19 And the sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to their generations. 20 And Amram married his father's sister Jochebed, and she bore him Aaron and Moses; and the length of Amram's life was one hundred and thirty-seven years. 21 And the sons of Izhar: Korah and Nepheg and Zichri. 22 And the sons of Uzziel: Mishael and Elzaphan and Sithri. 23 And Aaron married Elisheba, the daughter of Amminadab, the sister of Nahshon, and she bore him Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 24 And the sons of Korah: Assir and Elkanah and Abiasaph; these are the families of the Korahites. 25 And Aaron's son Eleazar married one of the daughters of Putiel, and she bore him Phinehas. These are the heads of the fathers' households of the Levites according to their families. 26 It was the same Aaron and Moses to whom the LORD said, 'Bring out the sons of Israel from the land of Egypt according to their hosts.' 27 They were the ones who spoke to Pharaoh king of Egypt about bringing out the sons of Israel from Egypt; it was the same Moses and Aaron.

The text is interrupted here to list the descendants of Jacob with his first wife Leah through Levi down to Moses and Aaron. Those same ones that are herein being spoken of with respect to the Exodus generation. Leah had the first four sons - Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah. The first three sons, Reuben and Simeon and Levi were guilty of various sins in their lives. Reuben of incest, and Simeon and Levi of the murder of the Shechemites, yet they all three remain represented as descendants of Jacob even after 400 years of slavery. They did not somehow die out as a result of their infidelity to God, nor that of their descendants.

Judah is represented indirectly in that Aaron married Elisheba, which is the same as Elizabeth, the name of the wife of Zechariah, the parents of John the Baptist, who is yet another distant descendant of Levi. Elisheba is the daughter of Amminadab a descendant of Judah through Pharez and Hezron.

Aaron's son Eleazar married a daughter of Putiel, an Egyptian name meaning 'Dedicated to God', and had his son Phinehas bringing an intermixing of gentile into the ranks of the Levitical Priesthood.

The ages of Levi, Kohath, Amram, and Moses are given for reference to the time frame of the 400 year period to show that these four generations (prophesied to Abraham) could and did cover that length of time. So counting only the first 80 years of Moses life, as that is when the Exodus occurred, these ages combined add up to 487 years (137+133+137+80), or more than sufficient to cover the total period of 430 years spent in Egypt. Leaving 57 years available for overlapping of their respective lives (487-430).

So what does this all teach us? There is no such thing as a pure race, nor of a perfect descendantcy of peoples. These all had their failures in their respective lives. They intermarried with outsiders, as it were. Egyptian and Canaanite women are referred to above. When they get into the land of Canaan, this intermarriage activity will increase.

As the Levitical priesthood does not begin with Levi, but with Aaron, it will become a mixture of Hebrew and Egyptian with the birth of Phinehas through Eleazar. So much for the boasting of the priests in the time of Christ's first advent.

Man comes up with all kinds of concepts of superiority or privilege, constantly attempting to classify certain groups as somewhat higher than all of the rest of us. And that is simply not true. There is no category of people, no line of pedigree that is superior to any other line. No super race. No privileged race. We all came from Adam. And Adam came from common worthless dust as we studied in Genesis. So that makes us all no better than our origin.

With just a few verses the time line of the Egyptian residency is listed, the origin of the Levitical Priesthood is made clear, the intermarriage even between the tribes of Jacob is indicated. But here especially the tribes of Levi and Judah, from which the priesthood and the Royal dynasty will come. That is the link to Christ Himself.

Aaron announced Gods will to Pharaoh just as John the Baptist, his descendant, will announce the coming of Christ. Eleazar's marriage to a gentile woman demonstrates the link between Jew and gentile, and their inseparability when it comes to accepting Christ as savior. There are no favorites in the spiritual life.

As for some of the other persons mentioned, the sons of Uzziel will help carry the bodies of Nadab and Abihu out of the camp. The sons of Merari are listed as the among the important of the Levitical families, Num. 3:33. So there was a population of strong spiritual believers among the Hebrews as well as some of their Egyptian masters, even after 400 years of captivity.

Gods will cannot be confined by time. Gods will cannot be confined by marriage. Gods will cannot be confined by physical ability or mental ability. There is nothing that can constrain or alter Gods plan for our lives. Though there were many who were negative, Gods plan called for their deliverance and that is what will happen.

So in each of our lives, there is nothing that can alter or avert Gods plan for each one of our lives. We can make ourselves more miserable by being negative, of course, but it would be far better for each of us to be positive and to enjoy Gods plan that he has reserved for us.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
