Exodus 9:1-7

Lesson # Exodus 9:1-7
Study Material - Exodus 9:1-7

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Ex. 9:1-7

1 Then the LORD said to Moses, 'Go to Pharaoh and speak to him, 'Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews,' Let My people go, that they may serve Me. 2 For if you refuse to let them go, and continue to hold them, 3 behold, the hand of the LORD will come with a very severe pestilence on your livestock which are in the field, on the horses, on the donkeys, on the camels, on the herds, and on the flocks. 4 But the LORD will make a distinction between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt, so that nothing will die of all that belongs to the sons of Israel.' 5 And the LORD set a definite time, saying, 'Tomorrow the LORD will do this thing in the land.' 6 So the LORD did this thing on the morrow, and all the livestock of Egypt died; but of the livestock of the sons of Israel, not one died. 7 And Pharaoh sent, and behold, there was not even one of the livestock of Israel dead. But the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not let the people go.

The Egyptians worshiped cattle. The Israelites made a golden calf while out in the desert. We'll see that in a later study. They got the idea from their masters whom they lived with for 430 years. Here is a destructive blow to the economy of Egypt, to their religious rituals, to the very authority of Pharaoh himself.

The Hebrew livestock will be spared, but the Egyptian livestock will die in great numbers, and it will occur in a very short space of time - 'tomorrow'. This will definitely get the attention of the Egyptians. Not that they shouldn't have been paying attention prior to this the fifth plague.

The deadly pestilence or murrain, is the Hebrew word 'deber', a severe pestilence, murrain, plague, extremely destructive. The word for 'all' as in all of the livestock died is 'kol' and in its form means that huge numbers will die. Everywhere one travels in Egypt, with the exception of Goshen, one will encounter death of livestock in great numbers. Even in Goshen where he Hebrews resided, the livestock of the Egyptians will die. The animals of the Hebrews will not suffer even one death though they drink from the same watering holes, and breath the same air. Whatever the pestilence was (God selective), it dropped the Egyptian livestock right in their tracks without harming the Hebrew livestock.

Prior to this plague number five, Pharaoh was again warned, given the choice to let the people go. Once again he refused. There was no continued duration for the deaths of the livestock. On the appointed day - 'tomorrow', the livestock just dropped dead in great numbers. The event was a shock event. It was foretold and it occurred. It was over. There was no opportunity for Pharaoh to ask for the plague to end, because it already ended.

Pharaoh received reports from throughout the nation, no doubt. He sent to Goshen to confirm that the Hebrews livestock were still alive and unharmed. Instead of dropping his head in surrender, his anger grew into a greater defiance toward Gods commands and to Moses' requests. This is the fifth plague and the fifth opportunity for Pharaoh to make his decision independently, and to make the right decision to let the people go.

This will be his last free decision opportunity. Hereafter, the decision from Pharaoh will be determined by God. Pharaoh had opportunity before all of these plagues, as he had opportunity during each one of these first five plagues, and he stubbornly refused to let the people go. Now from the sixth plague on, God will harden Pharaoh's heart. And this is significant, but we'll get to that study tomorrow. Hey, there is that 'tomorrow' word again.

This is but a brief account of the fifth plague. It was a shock, though Pharaoh was pre-warned. Most of us need to look at our own lives closely. Something happens everyday in our lives that reminds us that God exists, that we need to learn of His role in our lives, that we need to do something in our lives to get with a program of spiritual growth, such that we can gain control over our lives. Pharaoh refused and he lost control over most everything. He discovered that he was not really in command despite his position as King of Egypt.

God placed Pharaoh in his position and Pharaoh abused that position. God places everyone in the positions that they are in. God promotes. God demotes according to His plan for each one of us and human history. If we keep getting hit with little problems in our lives, and we are generally negative toward Bible study, then we need to be aware that sooner or later the big hit on our life is not too distant in the future.

The impact in Egypt was on their economy and their beliefs though property alone was destroyed. The next plague will be on the people.

Throughout or Bible study we, each of us, need to be reflecting on the lessons that the passages teach. We are not just reading a story for our own entertainment, but we are actually reading the future of our own lives, or possible future. Not likely that most of you out there own livestock, but you do own property of some sort which is a major part of your means of earning income, even if it is just your car for transportation. What would happen to you if your income earning ability were destroyed, say to the tune of 80% or 90%? Perhaps your business, or your job is terminated. Then what do you do? Do you get mad and blame someone? Pharaoh blamed the Hebrews for his troubles, though they had nothing to do with his trouble.

God alone controls history, not man. Jesus Christ is the alpha and the omega, that is, He is the first and the last and everything. There is nothing in life or history that does not happen without His permission. God gives adequate warning as to future punishment if His Word is not obeyed. So with advanced warning, and there is no one on the face of the earth who does not have advanced warning, then there is no excuse for anyone for not making the right decisions in life and avoiding Gods wrath.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
