Eze. 4:16-17

16 Moreover he said [amar] unto me, Son [ben] of man [adam], behold, I will break [shabar] the staff [matteh] of bread [lechem] in Jerusalem [Yaruwshalaim]: and they shall eat [akal] bread [lechem] by weight [mishqal], and with care [da'agah]; and they shall drink [shathah] water [mayim] by measure [masuwrah], and with astonishment [shimmamown]:
17 That they may want [chacer] bread [lechem] and water [mayim], and be astonied [shamem] one [iysh] with another [ach], and consume away [maqaq] for their iniquity [avon]. KJV-Interlinear

16 Moreover, He said to me, 'Son of man, behold, I am going to break the staff of bread in Jerusalem, and they will eat bread by weight and with anxiety, and drink water by measure and in horror, 17 because bread and water will be scarce; and they will be appalled with one another and waste away in their iniquity. NASB

People living in Jerusalem were living in the City of David, the City of God, the City of Peace. They know of this fact (so do you and I). They are aware of God and history, yet they live not by Gods rules but their own.

God provides all of mankind bread made of flour. That is common grace. God provides believers with the bread of heaven. That is Bible doctrine - spiritual food.

The staff of bread is a reference to something that is indispensable to the preservation of life. Without it, there is no life. Without life there is no meaning, no purpose, no destiny.

Bread made of grain feeds the body only, but the body of this life fades eventually, back to the dust of the earth. The soul is not a part of the body of dust. It merely resides there until it can move on, and into a better body, an indestructible one. This is of course for believers in Christ.

In the spiritual life, there is happiness because there is life and a bright future.

But outside of the spiritual life, happiness departs and does not exist. There is no bright future because there is no basis or foundation for one. Only misery and terror and unhappiness awaits the person who rejects God and doctrine. For believers the misery etc., occurs in this life.

Lev. 26:39
39 'So those of you who may be left will rot away because of their iniquity in the lands of your enemies; and also because of the iniquities of their forefathers they will rot away with them. NASB

All this because of their sin. Because of their rejection of the spiritual side of life which God gives to everyone freely.

The Israelites (anyone who is indifferent to or rejects God and doctrine) are left to languish in their hunger (lack of proper food) and thirst (lack of anything refreshing or quenching or satisfying). And, that causes distress in the life. Distress comes from uncertainty and fear and especially when there is a very real threat knocking at your door. Like being surrounded by an enemy of any kind.

There is an impending siege against the city of peace (Jerusalem). Provisions are not available and resources needed cannot get in where they are needed (in the soul).

The people (everyone) have only been warned thus far. Words of warning do not bring any harm. They just provide a person a way out of harms way. The people had a very long time before the events of history would come crashing down around them. We all have adequate time to prepare and get out of the way of a siege against the soul. But once that siege begins it will be terribly hard (but not impossible) to turn ones life around.

But then, why would anyone let things go that far wrong in their life? Starting with a siege preventing needed resources (doctrine), then a famine and shortage of food (starvation of the spiritual life), and then finally the breach of the walls of life followed by enormous physical and mental pain resulting in death. A picture of the life of a person not functioning in their spiritual life.

Ezekiel has only revealed the siege and famine which bring hardships enough. The worst is yet to come.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
