Eze. 5:1-2

1 And thou, son [ben] of man [adam], take [laqach] thee a sharp [chad] knife [chereb], take [laqach] thee a barber's [gallab] razor [ta`ar], and cause it to pass [abar] upon thine head [ro'sh] and upon thy beard [zaqan]: then take [laqach] thee balances [mo'zen] to weigh [mishqal], and divide [chalaq] the hair.
2 Thou shalt burn [ba`ar] with fire [uwr] a third part [shaliyshiy] in the midst [tavek] of the city [iyr], when the days [yowm] of the siege [matsowr] are fulfilled [male]: and thou shalt take [laqach] a third part [shaliyshiy], and smite [nakah] about [cabiyb] it with a knife [chereb]: and a third part [shaliyshiy] thou shalt scatter [zarah] in the wind [ruwach]; and I will draw out [ruwq] a sword [chereb] after [achar] them. KJV-Interlinear

1 'As for you, son of man, take a sharp sword; take and use it as a barber's razor on your head and beard. Then take scales for weighing and divide the hair. 2 'One third you shall burn in the fire at the center of the city, when the days of the siege are completed. Then you shall take one third and strike it with the sword all around the city, and one third you shall scatter to the wind; and I will unsheathe a sword behind them. NASB

As the population of the city of Jerusalem lived under the siege of the Chaldean army, the people will slowly run out of provisions. This is a picture of mankind trying to live on planet earth without God as their principle provider. Planet earth will eventually run out of resources for any given individual.

Now I am not speaking of the planet running out of natural resources. But I suppose sooner or later in history in some future time, it would. But, this running out of resources is meant more for the personal level.

Each person who is indifferent toward God will run out of options. We are born with certain blessings and as we live our lives, we either receive more blessings as a result of our spiritual growth, or we use up our earthly 'common' blessings and eventually run out. That is the time of the end of our life. Some folks run out early in life. Some folks run out in old age.

The population of Jerusalem has rejected God and in so doing has placed themselves under siege from the world.

Without a refilling of blessings, then ones resources run out. The population will run out of fuel and food. And as they run out their health will deteriorate. The pressure and stress of the siege along with the lack of good food and water, and resources will bring on dysentery, starvation, disease, and death.

The death of people will spawn yet another round of problems of stench and filth and disease. Their lives will be taking a faster and faster nose dive into oblivion.

Ezekiel is to cut off his hair - a forbidden act for priests. An action reflecting the siege and destruction of the city due to the attitudes of the general population which was anti-God, and therefore their attitude represents their forbidden attitude before God.

Lev. 19:27
27 'You shall not round off the side-growth of your heads, nor harm the edges of your beard. NASB

Isa. 7:20
20 In that day the Lord will shave with a razor, hired from regions beyond the Euphrates (that is, with the king of Assyria), the head and the hair of the legs; and it will also remove the beard. NASB

Ezekiel is to use scales and divide his hair into three portions. Note that the use of the scale will not place an exact same number of hairs in each pile. So the division into thirds will be approximate.

Ezekiel is to take the first portion of hair and burn it in the city square (where he is currently living in Babylon) and burn the hair so that all can see and understand the Biblical principle.

The first portion, which will be burned, will represent the people that will die due to the famine, starvation and disease that will occur during the siege. One-third of the population of the city will die of these things. Life will not be very pleasant.

With the second one-third portion of hair, Ezekiel is to go around his city, and strike this hair with a sword, cutting it into even smaller bits and pieces. This destruction will represent the number of people that will be killed by violence when the Chaldean army finally breaches the walls and enters into the city of Jerusalem. There will be no part of the city which will be safe. Though people will run and hide, none will escape the sword of the invading army. One third of the population of the city will die in this violent manner.

This picture will also come complete with all of the expected screams, pleading for life, crying, horror, raping, and torture that you would expect from such a violent slaughter. The people will be severely lacking in their health and unable to defend themselves.

As for the third portion, Ezekiel is to throw it up into the wind and let the winds carry the hair to where it may. This pictures the total helplessness of the people who run or try to run away. Those who run will still have the sword running after them and many will die, but some will get away, but only to live in exile in foreign lands and under the oppressions that will exist wherever they go.

Nearly all of the population of the city of Jerusalem will die. Those who escape from the destruction of the city, will only find themselves living under some other tyranny because they are still not living under Gods roof, but they remain under the roof of some foreign ruler.

There will be a saved remnant, however. We'll study them tomorrow, but they will be very few in number.

The impending destiny (in this life) of anyone who ignores their spiritual life, is not a good one.

Note from our previous study. Why does all of this hardship fall on the Israelites? Because of their sin.

What was their sin? Their first and worst and continuing sin was to ignore God in their daily life. From there all other sins manifest themselves and everything goes downhill from there.

For generations the population had been moving further and further away from God. Society had been degenerating to the point of extreme evil. Such is the result of remaining away from God and doctrine for an extended period of time. No one is exempt from that kind of destiny, so don't think that you are tougher than life in this world, and that you can keep yourself near to God by means of your own effort.

Ignore God in your life and your misery and loss is certain. Pursue your spiritual life in the proper manner, and blessing and happiness and far more are certain. Which do you suppose, is the preferred destiny?

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
