Genesis 3:14-15

Lesson # Genesis 3:14-15
Study Material - Genesis 3:14-15

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Gen. 3:14-15

14 And the LORD God said to the serpent, 'Because you have done this, cursed are you more than all cattle, and more than every beast of the field; On your belly shall you go, and dust shall you eat all the days of your life; 15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise him on the heel.'

God has concluded the examination of the parties. The serpent, Satan has already been convicted of rebellion against God in a time far earlier to these events in man's history. So God merely passes judgment and the sentence on the serpent. And in two parts. The first is on the animal which was used by Satan, an the second part was on Satan himself.

The original serpent had the capability of flight, but now is cursed and thrown down to its belly to crawl in the dust. The magnificence of the serpent which apparently caught the eye of Eve, is no longer available to us. So we can only imagine perhaps a cobra, or perhaps something similar, with wings of a sort as it sits in the tree and then is cast down to the ground and its wings removed permanently. Thus God destroys this source of distraction and sets up a reminder for Eve as well as Adam, that disregard of God and His commands only results in terrible problems in life.

Rom 8:20, Creation was subjected to futility, because of Satan. Those whom Satan uses must come under judgments as well. For they freely give themselves over to his influence and therefore are subject to his punishment. Those who promote the will of Satan, which is simply disregard of God as well as more severe attitudes, are subject to Gods judgment as well. The serpent did not escape punishment. The ox does not escape punishment as well if it kills a human being, Ex. 21:28-29, or even the owner of a dangerous animal who refuses to contain the animal.

Subtlety is the worst of deceptions, for it fools others into sin, and is therefore subject to the harshest of punishments. Satan was extremely deceitful and is punished accordingly. Sinking to the dust is the lowest of levels one can slip, Psa. 44:25. And so the serpent has been sent to the bottom of the ladder. Likewise Satan is already there, and demonstrates his unchanged attitude. Like Satan, evil people care nothing about others. They will stop at nothing to elevate themselves at everyone's expense. Thus sin is a very powerful influence on ones life. Not just sin in the sense of committing some wrong deed, but a negative attitude toward God is a sin as well. And it is the worst possible positions a person can be in, because negative volition to God opens the door for the influence of false wisdom and sin. Remember that the sin nature has a strength and a weakness. Its strength is human good, which is good done in the energy of the flesh and without regard to God. Man elevating himself by means of his own works, his own righteousness. And because it is separate and apart from God it is in effect evil. The area of weakness in the sin nature is in the area of sinful deeds such as gossip or even criminal behavior, lust and so forth.

Now that the serpent has been cast down to the ground, it can strike no higher than the heel of man. And thus the lines of battle are drawn between man and serpent. The man is upright and can ultimately stamp on the head of the serpent and crush it completely. But this is more than a contest between man and snake, it is a contest in the huge unseen angelic conflict. Satan will try to destroy man, and the Savior of man, but all he will be able to do is bruise his heel, the heel of Jesus Christ on the Cross as His feet are nailed to the Cross. But Christ in the end will crush Satan and defeat him forever, thus ending history, and finally carrying out the sentence which was placed on Satan long before man came into the picture of history.

The seed of man is excluded here. The seed of the woman is emphasized because it is the woman who was deceived, therefore the deception against the woman will come back and be Satan's final undoing. Adam sinned of his own understanding and he did it willingly knowing the repercussions of his decision, therefore the sin of mankind is transmitted down through the generations from the source of Adam, not the woman.

So the stage of history is set. Satan has been told of his own demise, and now it will torment him throughout all of history. As he experiences defeat after defeat, he will still rationalize his efforts to be as great as God. He will never see the truth. Likewise he will never see that his policy is nothing but tyranny and chaos for mankind. Satan offers nothing good for man, only our destruction in order to free himself. Satan promotes only pain and suffering, and our history is a good example of what will happen to people when God is ignored. People become corrupt and selfish to the point of hurting others. Sometime it is in a little setting as in a social club, and other times the setting is much broader as in a world war, with lots of examples in between.

Thus God makes the first promise, of the seed of the woman who would eventually crush Satan, and sin, and death. This is all wrapped up in the curse and judgment of the first party to the sin of Adam and Eve, who is the serpent, the devil. Next will come the punishment of the woman and finally the man, but these punishments are totally different from the serpent. We will see these in the next couple of lessons.

Now is the time to post a prayer.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
