Genesis 4:3-5

Lesson # Genesis 4:3-5
Study Material - Genesis 4:3-5

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Gen. 4:3-5

3 So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the LORD of the fruit of the ground. 4 And Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and for his offering; 5 but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard. So Cain became very angry and his countenance fell.

Here we have the pattern of worship of God, and specifically the second person of the Trinity, the Lord God, or Jesus Christ as we know His name now in our day. But in those days He had no name, or as Moses was instructed, 'I Am', which refers to the Lord God Almighty and the many other titles we have come to know Him by and understand who each person of the Godhead is. King of kings, Lord of lords, First and Last, God of Israel, and so forth.

But in the course of time is a phrase which refers to the setting of a specific occasion wherein the children, named here as Cain and Abel, came to their father, Adam with their regular sacrifice and before him offered it to God the Father.

How do we know that Adam is involved? The head of the family held the position of priest for the family and this title continued until the Levites were assigned the task by Moses at Gods direction. 1 John 1:1, these things were from the beginning. All scripture is consistent from the time of Adam until our present time. God is faithful. Once He puts something in place it remains until it is replaced by something better. All of the mechanisms of the Old Testament were but shadows, Heb. 10, of the reality which was to come. The reality of course is Jesus Christ. All shadows point to Christ and His work on the Cross. Jer. 6:16 and Isa. 23:7, again refer to the ancient ways, the routines and rituals of old which continued until the time of the Cross. At which time the sacrifices were fulfilled and no longer necessary, and therefore abrogated. The Israelites refused to accept this and this resulted in their annihilation in 70 AD. and worldwide dispersion which continues even to this day and will remain so until the second advent of Christ.

Gen 8:19 and Eph. 6:4 instruct us to train our children in the way that they should go. Jude tells us that even Enoch, who was merely 7 generations away from Adam, was a great Bible teacher. So Adam taught his children. Abel listened and Cain did not.

They each brought their offering. They came from prior knowledge of the date and the offering required. They came of their own free will. They were not driven to do this ritual. From their prior instruction and from the rational thinking which they had in their souls, they brought their sacrifices to worship God.

More specific details on the sacrifice process is revealed in Leviticus. This procedure had not changed from the days of Adam until the days of the Cross.

Matt. 23:35, addresses Abel as righteous. Heb. 11:4 clarifies that by faith Abel made his offering. Abel offered his sacrifice in accordance with the commands of God. Cain did not. Cain offered in accordance with the fruits of his own labor, not Gods labor. In salvation there is only one way of salvation, and that is through the work of Christ on the Cross. We accept this by our expression of faith in God when be believe in Christ as we are commanded to. Cain rejected this requirement, thus rejecting God, and therefore God rejected Cain. So Cain got mad.

Cain was ruled by his sin nature. He was an evil person and if he could not have his way he would turn to violence. His arrogance first rejected the teaching of God, then the teaching of Adam. Running into rejection he became angry and this internal emotion found a release in violence. Cain would eventually kill Abel.

God accepted Abel's sacrifice and rejected Cain's sacrifice. God accepts only those persons who follow his commands. There is no place in heaven or in Gods plan for human good. Man was not present at the creation, nor was he involved in the work of the Cross. All of the old scriptures speak to the total incompetence of mankind and the necessity of a savior. Thus the rituals of the sacrifices and offerings were given to mankind to be teaching aids, mechanisms of instruction to teach about Christ and the necessity for His work on the Cross, which was still future from their viewpoint.

Abel gave by faith, Cain by selfishness. Abel praised God, Cain became angry with God. Abel sought Gods favor by complying with Gods commands, Cain sought Gods favor by means of his own efforts, rejecting Gods promise of salvation through the savior, which is what the sacrifices portray.

Many people seek religion from their own righteousness. In the worldly sense they are good people and do gooders as some might define them as. They go through all the right motions, and say the right words, are seen in the accepted places. Yet they reject God and disregard their need for some higher savior. They believe that they can live a good life and then enter through the pearly gates. Yet their arrogance is so subtle and so saturated in their souls that they don't even see that they are fooling themselves. They have always made the conscious choices though to reject God and the scriptures that have been with us for many thousands of years.

So Cain is the pattern of human works. As Eve is the pattern of human apathy, and Adam is the pattern of conscious decision. All failed. Abel is the pattern of recognition of mans failure and God as being the only way out of this sin and death situation. Adam recovered and so did Eve. Cain did not, and soon will be banished to eternal separation from God.

Cain's countenance fell. In time, your decisions will overflow to your appearance. Negative decisions will have an impact on your health and general well being. Your soul is the real you. A soul with doctrine in it, is healthy and consequently overflows to a healthy body, happiness, color in the cheeks, attitude and so forth. A soul missing doctrine is an unhealthy soul and that overflows to the health of the physical body, as well as the poor mental state of your mind. You can become overwhelmed with emotions, grief, anxiety, worry, self pity, and the list goes on.

The road to health and blessing is not from vitamins, but from doctrine, Gods word learned on a daily basis, from a position of strength, in fellowship in accordance with Gods commands.

End Of Lesson

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
