Genesis 4:19-24

Lesson # Genesis 4:19-24
Study Material - Genesis 4:19-24

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Gen. 4:19-24

19 And Lamech took to himself two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other, Zillah. 20 And Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock. 21 And his brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe. 22 As for Zillah, she also gave birth to Tubal-cain, the forger of all implements of bronze and iron; and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah. 23 And Lamech said to his wives, 'Adah and Zillah, Listen to my voice, You wives of Lamech, Give heed to my speech, For I have killed a man for wounding me; And a boy for striking me; 24 If Cain is avenged sevenfold, Then Lamech seventy-sevenfold.'

Cain is the line of degeneracy, the line of sin. Here are but examples of his offspring who practiced polygamy which is a sin. One spouse per person. Lamech had two wives. Certainly other men had more wives, as other women had more than one male encounter, so to speak!! Thus the command of God and His intent for one union between man and woman were ignored and rejected. When God is rejected then man seeks to make up his own rules and justifies them to himself.

Lamech had two wives, Adah meaning ornament, and Zillah meaning shade as in one standing over another in service. The women take a second class place to men when sin rules. They are but ornaments for the enhancement of the self centered man, or they are for service work only to benefit the man. This is another rejection of what God intended the woman's place to be.

Two more sons were born in these latter generations, Jabal and Jubal. Both come from the same root meaning streams of ones own origin, or flowing with great pomp. They were extremely arrogant, with their eyes on their own self importance, and they intended for others to see them as they saw themselves. They greatly over exaggerated their own self importance. Jabal was a herdsman while Jubal was a musician. These are both talents natural to each of them and obviously different between them.

Zillah had a son, Tubal-cain. Named after Cain, the original sinner in this line, and Tubal-cain is the last mentioned in this line. The next event for them is the flood which ends the entire line of Cain and those like him. Tubal-cain was a craftsman, a forger. He had the gift of making things from bronze and iron.

Naamah was his sister and her name means pleasure. She represents the sinfulness of self gratification in various forms of human sexual activities.

Lamech further boasts of his encounters with others. He killed two other people for seemingly frivolous actions, the one striking him. So encounters were common and violence the solution. Lamech demonstrates his knowledge of the events of Cain and Abel and the judgment God placed on Cain or any who might take revenge on him. Lamech even thinks his own actions are worthy of even more retaliation, seventy-seven fold, on those who might attack him. Yet he devises this from his own imagined self importance. His level of sinning has intensified since the days of Cain.

Over the last few verses we have discovered many things about the line of Cain. Many had names similar to those of the descendants of Adam. Copied names. Many had common natural talents. Talents that every human being in history has in one form or another. They were self opinionated and self serving. They took some things that God commanded and distorted it, marriage in multiple wives or degeneracy, the role of the woman in her subordination, conflict and violence, revenge - he struck me so I killed him.

The line of Cain ran from Cain until the flood. Over 1600 years, if you follow the math of the next chapter in the ages of the generations of Adam to Noah. See also the chart on Generations of Adam on the Index page under Images.

Cain and his descendants each lived hundreds of years. They lived in a large and growing population. The weather was near perfect, because the earth was watered by springs. There was no rain, there were no seasons until after the flood. The land was lush with vegetation and animal life. The only thing lacking was their spiritual growth. People were aware of God, but they rejected Him for their own self indulgences. Those who were strong and smart, ruled those who were weak and less intelligent. The jungle rules were shaping society.

Men who follow their sin nature copy those things that already exist. They do not originate new things, new names. Sons were named after those great men in Seth's line, but a name does not make the person. We are what we think. The content of our soul depends on where our focus is in life. Study Bible doctrine and you will renew your mind. You will grow and have a strong soul, strong morals compatible with Gods Word, self confidence, poise, compassion, humility, charity, a clear understanding of your role in life, a clear understanding of life in this world and life in the spiritual realm. Reject Bible doctrine and your sin nature rules. It drops down to the lowest common denominator of degeneracy. It copies, deceives, distorts, distracts, seeks revenge and the satisfaction of petty infractions in life. It takes principles of power, authority, justice, marriage, family, and so forth and redefines them to meet the needs or desires of the moment. Sin attempts to redefine life thinking that somehow reality will change just because sin wants it to. It discounts the role of God and mans need for His help.

Sin is very powerful. The sin nature which resides in each of us, has the power of destroying your life. We can never rule sin, it will always rule us. Our only hope of conquering sin is through Bible doctrine, fellowship, and spiritual growth. For therein lies the power of God. Man in himself is helpless and hopeless. God provides all the necessary resources to survive life, from the planet we live on to the doctrine we need in our soul to orient to everything. The unbeliever or even the negative believer, can rely on their talent, their IQ, their things, but when they die those things all die with them. Life doesn't exist only from physical birth to physical death. It continues into eternity and we have this time to prepare ourselves for eternity.

The believer who is positive to Bible doctrine and lives his life inside the fellowship power sphere, advancing in their spiritual growth, relies only on doctrine in life. God does everything else for us. He guides our steps in our daily lives. Our lives function in a normal and natural pattern. You might not see the real water parting for you in your life, but in reality the spiritual waters are parting life for you moment by moment. Sometimes it takes hindsight to see the event.

Keep in the word. Isa. 41:10.
